Another warm day at 78f (26c). Monday looks to be a break from the extreme heat, and hopefully, whatever it does, it does on Sunday. No one seems to know what form the storms will present themselves anymore.

My commute is as follows:
about 3.5 mile ride to nj transit train. train to rahway. about 1.2 miles to work. currently using two bikes locked at either end of commute to avoid hassles on train. uneventful morning. back hurts. |

The commute was an nice quiet ride in this morning. I had to ride my husbands bike as mine has some issues due to a fall I took yesterday. Anyway the bike sits differently than mine. I was not aware that our bikes sat so differently till last evening when I tried his. The good part is I was still able to ride in this morning.

I got lucky yesterday. It was extremely hot and humid with the high temp hitting 102F and heat index over 110 at 3 pm, and I was dreading the ride home -- was even considering snagging a ride with a coworker. Then some thunderstorms rolled through and the temps dropped 20 degrees by the time I left work. I even got lucky with the rain, as it was all passed by the time I left, and I had a very pleasant if muggy ride home.
I decided not to press my luck today, however, as the forecasters are calling for even hotter and humid weather with heat index over 110 again. My body can only take so much of this heat and humidity. Temps have topped 100 on 6 of the past 7 days and I've ridden nearly every day -- although much of those rides were in the early morning. The 100+ hot spell is supposed to continue through the weekend but we are supposed to get a break next week, altho with much great chance of rain and thunderstorms. |

It may sound crazy but I'm loving this warm Georgia weather. Somehow I've acclimated to the rain forest level humidity, and the record breaking temperatures are not out of the ordinary for a displaced Texan. I'll take that over a frozen balaclava any day.
Anyway here's a pic from the commute. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=260011 |
My commute was fine, despite the heat. Lots of people telling me I'm nuts for riding in this, but Meh.
First time commuting since the big storms over the weekend, and it was interesting seeing all the trees that had fallen. I think my decision not to try biking earlier this week was sensible, as there were a lot of them, and I suspect not all would have been cleared by monday. So, it sounds as though everything was hunky-dory, right until I pulled my lunch out of my pannier, and noticed that the insulated lunch bag was really damp. And so was the bag that had my cloths in it. Apparently aluminum cans don't make the best solution for a packed lunch, esp. if the soda in them has gone flat, perhaps? fortunately I think it was only a couple of ounces of liquid, but still a mess. |
A great ride in. Its been three days since the last commute and really enjoyed it today. Little overcast but not cold.

Yesterday within 1-2min of my commute I encounter some hipster riding haphazardly left and right on a grossly undersized bike. He probably stole it from a kid. This ****** is probably going to blow his knee caps. At this time I'm just warming up as I just left home and move to his left with lots of room well in advance. Before I pass him he moves considerably to his left in a squiggly manner without even looking until later. I didn't say anything, but I was already raging and the verge of cussing him out.
I've already gotten used to the heat, and I'm developing tan lines. I keep colliding with the giants bugs around here. |
Rode in later than usual today so I faced 90+ degree temps and hoardes of DC tourists.
Roder in later today because I was waiting for the tow truchk to pick up my car...I am now CAR FREE! Donated my trusty old 1990 Honda to the Purple Hearts Car group that collects used cars for veterans. So now I feel double good...no more car and a veteran will get a reliable vechicle. |
Nice ride. Pushing 60F and sunny. Definitely going to heat up today.
Did not take the 40-strewn road that ate my tire last night, glad I had a spare (if worn) tire at home. Called around, I thought the stretch of road belonged to a city, but they said it was in the county, and the county said that it is within a few blocks of a freeway on-ramp so state DOT maintains it. Now I am going to call them. I ordered another tire and it should be waiting for me at home when I get back from a business trip next week. |
The ride was good. I have a club ride tomorrow so I meant to take it easy. But, I was running a little late, so I pushed a bit... And then I saw that guy that passed me last week when I got a flat. He didn't even ask if everything was okay. Target acquired!
I took off when the light changed. I was going downhill and got it up to 25mph. He starts up the bridge over the railroad. I'm going to catch him... But I see the light on the other side, downhill, is red. I don't want to pass him and then sit at the red light, so I slow up. He keeps going and... RUNS THE LIGHT! Sonovabeach! So, that's how he plays it? Green light. I pump the pedals, hitting 30mph on the downhill. You are mine, buddy! But, I get another red that he promptly runs again. Well, he's consistent, at least. So, I get up to speed again. He's about 1/4 mile down the road now. I go hard, cutting the distance, catch the next light, and pass him. Yeeaaah! Yesterday, some nut passed me on the narrow overpass. I could have (should have) taken the lane, I suppose. But, drivers around here are not enlightened and I figure it's safe enough. He passed me pretty close, close enough that I thought he was either stupid, careless, or making a point. He comes to a stop 40 feet down the road, at the light, and angles his truck so I can't pass him. Oh. He's making a point. So, I went around the left side. He's rolling down his window. I just know he wants to share his mind with me, but I think he doesn't have enough to spare so I shake my head and keep rolling. Didn't see him again. Other than that, I got a nice bike ride. |
I'm starting to have to take it slow in the morning to avoid the hot 'n sweaty at work. As it is, the twice daily showers have begun in earnest.
|
Low 90s today, so I'll have a hot ride home. It was cool enough in the morning. I don't even want to think about tomorrow when they expect it to hit 100.

Another crazy commute today!! Came across a 16 year old boy who was unconscious and beat to a pulp on the side of the road. Looked like he had some possible stab wounds as well and someone had written obscene insults all over him in sharpie. I checked his pulse and he was alive so I called 911. Had to call into work to let them know id be late and I waited for the EMT's to arrive. Looks like he will be okay. Hope they find the A**holes who did it.

Awesome ride home, pushing 80F. Today I was toting a 60" cylinder strapped through my shoulder bag (empty going in, full of rolled up poster coming home). It was my own kind of 'give me this much room' jig. I didn't hit anything with it except whacking some other parents at my daughter's camp when I was dropping her off, but I was on foot then.

took the lazy ride this morning. less than half a mile on the pre train side as opposed to 3.5 miles or close. back hurts. i did not see an iguana!
|
A wonderfully rainy morning and warm at 73f (23c). It varied from heavy to light during the ride, and it is a welcome sight.
|
I started out of the house fine, but I was not able to get out of the yard due to the back fender causing some issue with the back wheel not turning okay. I looked at what could be causing the issue and have not figured out why it is not working correctly. I just picked my bike up Saturday from the bike shop. I guess it will need to go back again and see what is not working correctly. Tomorrow I will ride my husband's bike to work. I did not enjoy taking the car this morning.

Cooler than lately and moderate rain, what a great change in conditions after the heat.
|
Very nice today. 56F/13C & sunny. No wind. Glad to be free of the heat & humidity.
I kept up with traffic at 17MPH. :p There was a slow-moving construction vehicle at the front of the line. I thought about passing all the vehicles on the right but there are too many right-hook possibilities, nobody's going to expect a bicycle passing like that, and I knew I'd slow down on a hill ahead, so I just kept pace with the cars. |
Cool and lazy commute this morning. I tried out my DIY backpack/frame bag conversion which worked out so well that I'm embarrassed to have waited so long. It takes seconds to put on and off, and is completely out of the way in transit.
