Bound to happen eventually....

Hit by a car this morning. Sucks. A few scrapes. Bike was still ridable, but I'm going to have the bike shop check it out before riding it again. Not going to share any details, just wanted to say that I'm now a member of a club I didn't want to join.

SuncoastChad 02-14-12 09:45 AM

Since you're posting I'm guessing you are "OK" and walking about. Bummer becoming a member of that particular "been there, done that" club.

Rick@OCRR 02-14-12 09:51 AM

Unfortunately true; it's happened to most of us and the rest are just waiting for their turn. Good to hear that you escaped with all your bones intact! Scrapes and "road rash" are just part of the process.

Rick / OCRR

FunkyStickman 02-14-12 10:27 AM

Welcome. Glad you fared okay. Bikes can be replaced. You cannot.

Mark Stone 02-14-12 10:30 AM

Glad to hear there were only a few scrapes! I'd say "Welcome to the Club" but it's not a club we really want to be part of. I'm moving to cancel my membership, since it's about 21 years since a car and I collided . . . I've had a couple of crashes since then, but they were just me being inattentive. Most importantly we're glad you're ok!

hiyer1 02-14-12 10:42 AM

glad to hear you're okay...stupid cagers....

AdamDZ 02-14-12 11:25 AM

Damn, another one :( Glad you're OK. Lucky, I avoided becoming a member of this club so far.

modernjess 02-14-12 11:26 AM

add me to the Glad you are OK club.

Me too on both counts.

muu 02-14-12 12:10 PM

Just hope you don't try to double dip.

I've had two incidents, but both were while I was still in school. Nimble bodies are less likely to break I guess... one of the settlements did help fund my college tuition.

DogBoy 02-14-12 12:46 PM

Report from bike shop: Wheel's slightly out of true, mirror - toast. Bar tape - toast, Headset - fine, fork legs- in balance, fine. Front fender - questionable. Expected cost for all repairs - $50. Still holding my breath though, they are going to tear it down to make sure there isn't something they didn't see at first glance lurking around. Body...scrapes. No bruises so far, no swelling. I'm going to wait until tomorrow and see if there are any funky aches before deciding to see a Dr.

tjspiel 02-14-12 01:00 PM

I'm a member of the club as well. My collision was thankfully minor too. I was able to continue on home.

I once got into a conversation with a old guy on a train who claimed he had been hit 7 times while biking. I thought he was either lying or just had really bad luck.

Less than a mile after my first collision, I was nearly taken out by a parked car suddenly pulling into traffic. After that I figured that maybe getting hit 7 times during a few decades of riding wasn't so unlikely after all.

chefisaac 02-14-12 01:22 PM

did they stop? get insurance info?

+1

Sorry you had to join the club (I'm unfortunately a Sr. Member). Hopefully you'll be feeling better soon.

Rubberside Down!

Glad you are okay.

frpax 02-14-12 03:16 PM

Sorry to hear you joined the club.

My last encounter was a hit & run. I had some road rash and I need some stitches in a finger.

As others here have said, I'm sorry to hear that you've had the "honor" of joining that particular club. Also as others have said, I am glad to hear that you're alright. You are being smart not to disclose any of the details of the crash. As both insurance companies and lawyers DO have employees whose only job is to surf The Net looking for details about the crashes that their clients have been involved in.

Also as others here have said I am glad to hear that you are going to have your bike inspected for any hidden damage.

Just don't forget to get yourself checked out.

Agreed, most of us know that sadly the more time we spend in the saddle the more experience that we gain, and that sadly the more likely we are to be involved in some sort of crash.

And as you've said road rash/scrapes are part and parcel of riding a bike. As is falling in general, such as learning how to use clipless pedals, road damage/debris, etc.

SlimRider 02-14-12 04:37 PM

Glad to hear that you're alright!

This club is a very exclusive and nefarious one! It's also kinda mystical insofar as members can join, but their only form of resignation, is death.

The only way in, is to narrowly escape death. The only way out, is to be captured!

Let's fervently pray that we keep our membership limited to just a select few.

- Slim :)

I never thought of it that way... not sure I want to think of it that way, either!

How do you know it was the cager's fault?

A safe bet since for adult cyclist it is the motorist fault 70 to 90% of the time depending on the study.

I did reject the San Francisco news paper so called study that claimed cyclist at fault over 50% of the time. When they are using police reports where the cyclist were repeatedly blamed based on excessive speed. Really, the cyclist is so many of those cases was speeding and the motorist were not.

DJ Shaun 02-14-12 08:40 PM

Glad your OK.

I've joined the club twice thanks to hit & runs. Since I wasn't injured the drivers just don't bother sticking around.

:roflmao2: Excessive speeding by cyclists? Are there that many competitive racers in SF?

See a doctor anyway, that's what everyone tells me. For the insurance claim, just in case, etc. Sounds like you're the way I am though, you probably won't unless there's a reason to.

Wow, you're lucky.

I've only had one hit & run so far (and my only car hit so far), but I ended up in the hospital with a compression fracture on my spine and they never did find the jerk who hit me and took off

I certainly wouldn't play Russian Roulette with those odds!

It seems a bit strange the OP didn't want to get into the minor stuff like "details".

No, but there are a lot of big, steep hills. ;-)

Just following protocol. But thanks for the vote of confidence.

Bovice 02-15-12 05:14 PM

As everyone else said, welcome to the club.
