ALMOST started commuting today....
...until I saw that it was 33 degrees with freezing fog outside. I also have to get my dad a Christmas gift at lunch and need the car to get to .... UGH! ..... THE MALL!
Maybe tomorrow.

I'm shopping by bike or by public transit.
Driving in traffic is bad enough, but when it takes 30+ mins to find a friggin parking spot...I'd rather ride, it's much faster and far more enjoyable.

Hey, I don't know how used to cold weather you are, but I find it is really pretty pleasant to ride in the cold. It was 25 F here this morning. The main thing is to protect from wind and you'll be okay. Wear earmuffs or a thin hat under your helmet, and good warm gloves. I was quite comfortable this morning even with a ton of wind blowing.

I'll ride in anything down to 10.
Seeing as I live in the coldest metro area in the country, I usually don't ride much in January and February.
Our high on Thursday is supposed to be 3, which means that it will be -10 when I go to work. No amount of bundling up makes that anything less than a chore.

I suppose once I start commuting that I'll be more tolerant to adverse conditions. It's not 3 as it is in Minn, of course, but 33 is cold enough for me! I'll toughen up, I'm sure, but for now I'm a wuss!

I used to be a "fair weather" commuter myself. I now think that the 30s are a "heat wave". The 20s and lower for me are cold. But I guess it is all relative to what your used to. I actually got a little over heated and had to vent. I kinda like the cold now because the cars have to warm up...so they are even more spaced out. Also many cars are dying in the cold. Only those that are working will make it on the road.
Get out there and Ride! You will love it and get used to the cold!
Peace,

That's why god invented the socal, so you could commute year round in fair weather.
God knows driving during rush hour here sucks...

I have to agree with some posters, I was fearing my first winter commuting, but I'm finding that it's actually quite enjoyable. The cold is not a problem at all, just keep moving! Goggles were probably my best comfort item, before that I had steaming up glasses and my eyes teared up a lot.
Of course, the cold is severely affecting my ride time, and also I have more errands that require a car this time of year, so I'm pretty much resigned to only riding 2 or maybe 3 days a week, but it's still better than driving 5 days a week :-/

OK, so I had a dream last night that I started my winter commute ........ and I loved it! Now if I could just shake off this cold/cough/fever that I picked up. Once better, the commute begins!

>>I don't think I get sick as often when I ride every day in the winter. Cold weather exercize might strengthen the immune system, or something.
