Bikes: Diamondback Copperhead (hardtail, winter bike), 2014 Giant Rapid 2, 2015 Kona Big Rove ST

New bike!

As the title says, I have a new bike. Well, I will tomorrow when I pick it from the LBS.

I told myself a few years ago if I keep up with my commuting I'd reward myself with an upgrade. After 3 years of service my Diamondback Copperhead MTB will now become my dedicate winter bike. I've only been riding front suspension MTB's for years.

My new ride is a 2011 Giant Rapid 2. https://www.giant-bicycles.com/en-us/....2/7298/44051/
Can't wait to shave some time off my commute!

That's a really nice color combination. The red really adds to the boring black and white. Congrats!

Wow, nice one! Question: are you considering chaining that beyond your eye's sight for more than 5min? if so, don't tell me.

I've already got fenders on and I've put in an order for Continental Gatorskins. The LBS didn't have any racks in yet so I'm back to using a backpack for now.

Actually I can see the bike racks from my office window.

I've got 2 locks, a U and a cable. That should deter the opportunists looking for a easy ride.

It's light and accelerates with ease. On my first commute home with it I already shave over 10% off my record time. Once I get a better feel for it I can only image how quick my commute will get.

I wasn't sure I'd like the style of bike at first. I once had an aversion to "skinny" tires when I was younger. But on my MTB commuter I've progressed from knobbies to 1.75 slicks to 1.25 slicks. Suddenly 25mm tires didn't feel odd to ride on anymore.

Back in January I had a look at a few bikes at my LBS. I was originally thinking of getting a hybrid or IGH bike, with disk brakes, for year round use. Didn't like the fit of the ones they carried. Either too big or too small. This one was setup on a trainer and I gave it a quick spin to test it out. The bike just fit me perfectly but looked and felt a bit too "sporty" for my needs. (Or so I thought!) And since then I just couldn't stop dreaming about this bike. So yesterday I went to my LBS to shop for a new commuter and to check out the 2012 models that just came in. This bike was still available and the shop let me give it a spin around the block. After a quick ride I was sold! And being last years model it had a reduced price too.

Only downside is I can't take pot holes like I use to. It's been over a decade since I've ridden a bike without front suspension.
