I had a tumble snowboarding and split my helmet. Doc said I would have been dead if I hadn't been wearing it. It was a great helmet and I have yet to find one for biking I like as much as my snowboarding helmets.

What are your favorite helmets and in particular which is best for commuting?

I love my Bern Macon EPS. It's a thin, lightweight, durable hard shell helmet with better ventilation than any other "skate" style helmet. You can toss it around a bit with the hard plastic shell and not worry about it cracking, etc. As a boarder, you'll probably like the fit & style. I got mine for around $35.
