#77 Sylvan sounds like has the best advice. I like the idea of putting the bike between you and the dog. But if all else fails, and the dog is ready to bite or attack me, I believe in using the tire pump as a weapon, and I feel no guilt in using pepper spray. I am a dog lover. I own two dogs. But I am a reponsible dog owner. I will defend myself if some one else is irresponsible with his dog.

It sounds like Merriwhether was lucky those two dogs probably hadn't been roaming free and hunting small animals together, otherwise, they would have immediately split up and come at him(her) from both sides. I've had that happen before to me at work. Fortunately, the owner realized just what was happening outside before his dogs separated enough to come around my bag from two directions at once. The dogs looked like a cross between a Great Dane and a German Shorthair.
I've got the best of both worlds, I'm a cyclist AND a mailman, so I see what can happen when dogs are not restrained. Even friendly dogs can be hit and injured by cars, when not chasing or running in the street. It happened to a nice dog on my route. I feel more pain for a nice dog that gets injured than I do for an owner that doesn't care.
