I can see if he made some kind of move to go into an adjacent traffic lane and the motorist couldn't react, but if the motorist simply misjudged the distance, they should be charged at the very least with an unsafe pass or something. In Fort Worth, there would be a violation of the 3 foot passing law which was passed a year or two ago.

I don't understand this either. If you hit someone walking wouldn't you be charged with SOMETHING? If you hit another car don't they normally determine who is at fault--at least for insurance purposes?

What we need is someone to take bicycle advocacy on as his personal cause and try to get some things like this changed.
Oh wait, someone did. . .but he got hit by a car this week. . .

How is Michael doing? He weathered the surgery to stabilize his chest wall today well, but it has been a tough day on him nonetheless. He will definitely need to remain in the cervical collar for the forseeable future, but right now there is no immediate need for surgery to stabilize the fractures. Depending on what his body can do on its own, and on how stable the fractures look once some primary healing has taken place, he may have to go into surgery - for now, however, the surgeon would rather leave him alone.

He still has 2 chest tubes, but his left lung (the one that was punctured) is reinflated. The brain bleed has not worsened, and Michael's sedation was eased up a little this morning to see how his neurological status was. He was able to follow simple commands and did open his eyes - this is an encouraging sign, indeed. He was sedated again after they assessed him - at this point it is important that all of his body's resources are dedicated to healing, and the best way to make sure of that is to allow the ventilator to breathe for him, and to keep him sedated.

It is important to remember that this is going to be a very long journey for Michael, Heather, Chance, Madison and Abigail. As in any serious situation, there might be setbacks, but Michael's strength, refusal to give up and the incredible family and friends who surround him have brought him to the other side of tough struggles before.

With our prayers and positive thoughts, he can do it again.

Does it hurt to donate? Not really. You feel the initial needle stick and your arm will sting for about 10 seconds from the betadine used to sterilize your skin. After that, you really don't feel anything. I always think that the minor pain I feel when donating is nothing compared to what the person who will receive my blood is feeling. It puts things into perspective.

I'm not much of a praying guy, but I did the ChipIn... should really get back to donating blood, too.

Hope he gets better soon! The pain he must be in... :(

Can't donate blood since we were in England at the wrong time.
(Went for the education....stayed for the mad cow disease.)

I was planning on donating at the bloodmobile this next week, and then a patient had to go and bite me. Next 6 mos gonna suuuuuuck.

Mike has had a bit of a setback, and they have upped his antibiotics to combat a potential lung and blood infection. Complications are part of injuries this extreme, and please continue to pray for Mike!

Since I was born abroad they don't want my blood. I'd gladly give some (I would get an extra day off too), but no... can't. I guess it will be a while untill we start hearing some good news here. Let's hope for the best.

Update - Michaels infection(s) causing fluid in his lungs has been identified as MRSA and yeast. They already placed him on the correct antibiotics to treat this, but MRSA can be very serious. They will have to drain his lungs again in the near future most likely and hope that things don't get worse.

Thank you for the updates. I have been thinking a lot about him and his family.

Nope, there's a whole slew of requirements (many kind of outdated) including having not received healthcare or traveled in certain countries, and being or having had sex with a gay or bisexual man.

I don't know about other countries for sure but if you're born in Eastern Europe you can't give blood in USA.

A former roommate went to donate blood, and it was incredible -- it's like they haven't changed the list since 1982. You can be the biggest hetero **** on earth and they're cool with it, but if you're a healthy gay person... hmm, no thanks.
