I got a pair of padded liners from MEC yesterday and rode with them under regular cargo shorts for 60km today. I was more comfortable in those for the duration of the trip than I ever have been before... I can't believe that I've been riding for decades without trying these!

I read an article in some magazine many years ago (it was probably the skanky Bicycling magazine) where they asked people what the best cycling invention was in the last 30 (or some number) of years. Overwhelming response was "padded cycling shorts". If you put lots of hours on the bike, chafing can't be fun.

I wear the mountain bike style padded cycling shorts. They work very well and don't show any lycra. I change into regular briefs at work.
