What cycling underwear
What cycling underwear do you all use? I pretty much ride my bike for hours a day and my boxers or boxer briefs get soaked, which gets uncomfortable and chaffing occurs. M boxers get soaked do quickly too, within only 20 or 30 minute rides. I have liners with the chamois pad in them, but they get uncomfortable after a while and walking.
|
Personally I have found the briefs work better than boxers if I'm riding in normal clothes. Everything stays in place if you know what I mean.
|
But that's not the problem, sweat is.

Never wear underwear cycling/commuting. Cycling shorts do the trick.

I agree just get a comfy pair of bike shorts, and if your commuting take a change of boxer for when you get to work or where ever your going. I have a pair of specialized shorts that have minimal padding and they work good for the ride and can be worn under clothes and still be comfy since they aren't heavily padded.

I use Under Armour underwear and it works well.

I agree with the cycling shorts suggestions noted above. I wear mountain bike shorts over my cycling shorts so I'll look more "normal" on the Metro train part of my commute.
Brand wise I have Giordana, Pearl Izume, Volar and Santini . . . they all work well. Rick / OCRR |
I use Andiamo underwear shorts (about $23-25) so I can wear regular cargo shorts or jeans over them and not look like the type of bicycle geek that people want to run down with their cars.
You need several pairs, though, because they get wet and germy, so start saving your money! |

I have a couple pairs of cheapo Nishiki padded cycling briefs that I got at Dicks or Sports Authority or wherever, when I was just starting out and was too chicken to get proper bike shorts. I find they are very comfortable to wear for long periods of time off the bike and now I use them when I'm running errands and just want to wear "street" clothes, but have a decent amount of riding to do. Today for instance, I had to run to Target and get my hair cut, with total riding distance being 15 miles...not wearing bike shorts for that. The main difference is that the cycling briefs are tight mesh rather than full lycra, so they breath a lot better than regular bike shorts, which don't seem to wick well if covered in jeans or cargo shorts.
|
If you just want to wick away the moisture, go to Target. They sell Champion C9 short boxer briefs, with no cotton. They work amazingly well, and are very durable. They are remarkably effective.
But beware. If you're sweating a lot, and you wick away the moisture through your underwear, the moisture is just going to end up soaked into your pants. That's where padding can be helpful. It absorbs some of the sweat, instead of passing it all through. |
What about compression shorts? I have a pair of Pearl Izumi liners with the chamois pad, but it sucks to walk around in. So how do compression shorts without the chamois liner work in taking away sweat?

this is what I wear 100% of the time (street, work and on the bike)
Intimissimi is an Italian company that specializes in Women's lingerie, but does sell men's underwear as well. They run about 10€/pair and I always picked up 12 pair when I went to southern Europe (Italy/Spain/etc...) but now they just opened a shop in Frankfurt :D I think that in the US you get them from Victoria's Secret. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=256746 http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=256747 |
Yea I Have some wicking treated poly briefs/Y-fronts..
but My climate is cooler, pace modest, trip only 1/2 hour, and so I find Cotton adequate.. |

I've found that the REI "Novara" padded boxer briefs do the trick pretty well. The chamois is relatively thin, so there's no unsightly bulge, and you don't walk around like a duck. As far as the sweating goes, try the powder from this company - works like a charm!!

Underwear are fun to wear, except when cycling. Except for REI "Novara" padded boxer briefs types of underwear under shorts or pants, don't wear them. Chafed skin can just ruin your ride.

I just wear boxers and Dickies type work pants.1 mile-100 miles they are fine for me.
I don't like real riding shorts/tights with liners, feels like I'm riding with a load in my pants. |

Is everyone afraid of the mention of thongs?

Never wear underwear, period. I don't have leakage problems.
