I got a android phone and i got a app from google called Google tracks. It makes a really nice bicycle calculator but it can be used for anything. Hiking driving what ever. If it moves and uses GPS its usefull. So i decided to record my commute.

Its intresting because using only my knowledge of the area i think i chose the most efficient path

So how about it. Whats the details on your commute?

I started with the MapMyRide App, but it was kind of iffy. Then I went to Google MyTracks and it was better. The last Smartphone app I used was Endomondo for Droid, which was the best of the ones I tried. The problem with all of them is that if you ride almost daily as I do, you become a data whale real fast. I just got a Garmin Edge 500. It was $300 at a LBS, but now that I am on the lower data plan, it will pay for itself in six months. I download all of the data via a USB cable, not pricey bandwidth. I now import the data into my Endomondo and Strava accounts off my hard drive.

My experience is the average moving speed reported by the smartphone apps is low by about 10%. The elevations can be on the high side by as much as 50-100%. This is because in hilly area, roads follow "cuts, and fills" in the terrain, and the elevations are calculated from the natural contours.

That was last Friday's "Solstice Friday" Commute all the way home. I usually ride five miles to a train station for the fifty five mile ride home, but it was the longest day of the year, so not go all the way by bike.

The shorter route is going to work. Longer route is going home. I use Endomondo, and my cell phone keeps track where I ride... it's usually off on actual mileage though, always shows a little less than what I usually do.

This is my planned route for when I start commuting. I figure I'll be doing well if I can make that in 1 hour 15 minutes.

My commute is flat as a pancake, it's awesome.

My usual commute. If you look at it you will notice there is a shorter way, but that way involves a street (Red Hill Ave) that has 50mph+ traffic, and 0-shoulder in spots. The route I take is bike line almost all the way.

Takes me about 40 mins. Keeping in mind, its totally flat, but I'm newb and on a heavy hybrid, so that's ok

Speaking of being newb; it never even occurred to me to use a gps app on my phone. Which is to say, I'm diggin' this forum.

usually works out to about 10.8km on the way into work.
usually works out to about 29 mins on the way into work.
usually works out to an average rolling speed of roughly 22 km/h (14mph) on a knobby-tired MTB which isn't that bad with the stop lights and such.

the way home ranges between 11 to 13km depending on any errands that I run or biergartens, street markets or wine festivals that i hit on the way home.

I can do these either way but I usually go in over the mountain and home around the coast.

I have the same thing - a slight downhill the entire way into work, and 9 times out of 10 a stiff tailwind. It's why my speed is 20 mph or so on the way in, but I'm lucky to break double digits on the way home. (Though since I started working nights it's been better, as the wind is usually quieter in the morning.)

No maps though - the GPS on my phone isn't accurate at all out here.

I feel for you, that scenery must be absolutely boooooring (sarcasm)

Not for nutthin folks, but I would be careful about posting on-line, a map that shows where you live.

There have been known instances of bike thieves using such data to target homes that potentially have expensive bikes in the garage.

This is one reason why Strava allows you to off-set a staring location to mask when you start from home.

Been using that feature since day one...and I upload my commutes only to Strava because of that feature. Plus, I have 2 large dogs, and I've never paid over $350 for a bike, so I don't think I'm going to be much of a target.

Found that feature on Garmin early on. Previously I had been starting and stopping my smartphone app timing some distance, about 1/4mi, from home and work. I never share the ride terminus (except where they meet public transit) on my public rides.

I don't think the resolution of my image would allow anyone to really pinpoint my location heh.

*edit* and I just changed it to make it a little more ambiguous.

My bike isnt even worth $250. He can come and find me if he wants. Ill teach him a lesson he wont forget.

Now all you need is a sticker in your window that says "Never Mind the Dog, Beware of the Owner" (Translation-There is a gun on the premises, wait 'til I'm gone then come steal it. Much better value on black market than a bike)

The one-way route is about 6.5 miles, and it's a gradual uphill on the way to work. I have to tell Google Maps that I'm a car, because otherwise it just fights me tooth and nail when I try to move the points to the roads I take.
