Just started a project like yours, I go tired of using the mountain bike as the winter/rain commuter and found this rattle can beauty.
Took off the bad rattle can paint and am reapplying better rattle can paint. http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=264630 |
Off-topic - but I have a question. What is a rattle-can paint job? Buy a spray can and paint the bike without sanding, cleaning etc? Is that why it's bad - because it doesn't have a good base? Or is it the paint quality itself that is suspect?
|
Fleet Streak!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've got one of those tucked away almost completely OEM but hideous red faded out, and tiny.

After much internet exploring I found that it was an 82 Schwinn Voyageur 11.8 |

Not sure why the painted these things such wretched colors though? |

Bad spray paint job, no attention to detail. Paint drips and dings all over, it looks much worse in person. Also the white gave the appearance of a ghost bike which I found disturbing.

I cite the hideous Specialized bikes that so many riders were using in the Olympics. (Photo linked to rather than embedded in support of the recently proclaimed respect for copyrights.) |

Poor sense of aesthetics seems to be a common ailment among bike manufacturers.

The frame is actually a pretty solid looking chunk of Crome Moly . Should be zero worries about that.
Not sure why the painted these things such wretched colors though? You original factory paint job still does looks nice upon that frame. I wouldn't disturb it too much! |

Would look a lot better if they had gone black on the bar tape (IMHO) but that orange is pretty darn orange.

Basically done. Just waiting on some el cheapo Ching Shen tires from these folks... http://www.huskybicycles.com/Merchan...gory_Code=tire
Never used so much grease and lube on a single bike before. Hoping it will help keep the rust in check for awhile. This has prompted me to update the bikes name from "The Pig" to "The Greasy Pig." :p And I used to have standards *snifle, snifle* :D |

You should wax the whole thing for good measure. ;)

It looks to good to be a beater, Maybe hammer some more dings in the paint?
Been fighting "mission creep" and the urge to make upgrades. The Greasy Pig has an old school steel seat post and I have several decent alloy ones that will fit........ NOOOOO! |

I wouldn't fight upgrading the seatpost unless its a slippery slope for you. I love the geometry of those old frames. Looks like a nice beater. They don't have to look like total crap.
With me it will start off with an innocent seat post and end with a set of Campy Record hubs. :D |

Tire showed up today!
The Greasy Pig is officially ready for my Monday commute, if you can call 8 min. a commute. Went for a little zip down the road and back. I describe this bikes ride as........stately. :D Actually not bad for what it is. Kind of like riding the pedal version of a Lincoln Town Car. :p If only it weren't so dog gone ugly. |
My #2 beater. This is the bike I ride in bad weather, and the one I that I will lock up. It is an old rusty 1986 Raleigh Gran Prix, 531 frame, and it has a sweet ride. I just keep the chain oiled, and air in the tires. This bike is almost UNSTEALABLE!! ;)

http://www.cehoward.net/granprix31.jpg I'd scrape off that Reynolds sticker, just to be on the safe side. |
First commute on The Greasy Pig yesterday.
Handlebars suck. They are just not right for this frame geometry so I installed some more upright ones. Much better. The el cheapo plastic platform pedals may be rustproof but they are kind of slick when wet, which will be a lot around here come winter. I replaced them with alloy ones with nice grip teeth. Riding again today and if the changes are keepers I'll post a pic. |

Well crud.
I have another job that will reduce my commute from 14 miles to .9 of a mile. While many would celebrate that I am kind of bummed out because I will now start fatting up and will have to resort to jogging to get enough exercise in the time I have available... |
