Tail light on Helmet

I purchased another tail light to attach to my helmet, but it took me a bit to figure out the best way to attach it. I opted for Velcro one-wrap. Worked out great. I feel better now that I have doubled my rear lighting on the commute!

Perhaps this is simple stuff to some of you, but maybe this will give those of us that need help trying to MacGyver things.

For me it was easy, my Bell Metro has a little plastic tab just made for attaching a blinkie. Your solution sounds good too.

I suppose you could also run a zip tie between the holes in the helmet and hang the blinkie on that.

there is a company that makes a smaller version for the back of the helmets. I cannot remember the name though.

This is what I use. Not sure the angle is right for the best rear viewing so I use another on my trunk bag. LEDs need to be lined up right. I love the beam up front - can direct it where needed. Also, the rechargeable battery holds a charge for a long time (maybe a month's worth of 3-4 days commuting in the morning (20 minutes each).

That's what I run too. I can see stuff reflecting in the mirror as I ride, so I figure it must be doing some good.

I clicked on that link, that a nice setup with good lums.

My setup is fairly cheap, but plenty powerful. The front torch on the helmet is a 26650 light pushing big lums. The 26650 light cost $20, the mount cost $1.65 both with free shipping. The rear light is a planet bike blinky clone, $5 shipped. That front torch will blow away car lights.. All toll with batteries, cost for all lights and mounts is $38.

The power.. I try to keep it aimed downward about 30 feet in front, as I do with my two front lights on the bars..

They have this in 2 places. I got one from each..

They have it on Ebay for 19.?? free shipping He list it as an 18650 only light, but if you noticed he sends you an adapter to use it with an 18650 cell. What you need an adpapter if it is a true 18650?? After looking at it, is the same on on dealextreme, and it run a 26650 and a 18650. To be sure, go with the one on dealextreme, because they do advertise it to be for 26650 and 18650, whereas, the one on Ebay, says only 18650 and could be tight with a 26650.
BTW, the light is bright! Real bright!

https://www.ebay.com/itm/110860011474...84.m1423.l2648

they have it a dealextreme too. $25.10 free shipping.

Great idea! Thanks for sharing. I have a cygolite hotshot as well and struggled for a while getting it mounted, but your idea seems better. I am curious though, how does it hold? One thing I love about the hotshot is its refusal to fall out of its harness. I would be afraid to lose it with Velcro. Does it stay (extremely) secure?

Just don't over do it ! a blinded oncoming car can still run over you.

Dont look at them with the bright light that is more suited to single track in the woods.

Mine doesn't blow away car lights, but it is plenty bright for bike work at 20+mph, and will irritate/scare people if it is pointed directly at them. People tend to treat me more like a moped with that light on (as they can not see what is behind my light). I do like the beam pattern - wide coverage with a center hotspot.

The main thing for the light is to get respect when riding. As in, being seen. With strong lights, cars tend to yeild the bicycle their rightofway. Whereas, without strong lights, they cut right in front of like you wasn't there. This what I have experience, and I don't ever venture out without strong lights. Day or night. Daytime I am on blinky.. This is for commuting only. No bike trails, MUPs, etc..

I'm leery about attaching anything to my helmet. Bad enough my head hitting the flat ground or even worse a curb, but putting a hunk of metal or rigid plastic into that equation concerns me. Anyone have any insight on this?

A couple of things...

-I use two of those kinds of wraps to mount my flashlight to the helmet when I want to.
-Other than a NiteFlux Red Zone 4, I'm not sure about the effectiveness of using a light on the helmet, given how many of the brighter lights have to be properly aimed. You move your head around and the light isn't as noticeable to the people behind you.

I'm more concerned with avoiding the accident that might cause a head-to-curb encounter.

I consider helmet-mounted lights an acceptable risk tradeoff.

It's a personal choice. What is good and works for one, will not be good and will not work for somebody else.

Example, I don't see how people ride listening to music, speakers on the bike, etc. For me, the light on the helmet is a worthwhile addition to a rider's weapon in seeing and being seen. The light on my helmet is just as powerful as the lights on the bar. However with the light on my helmet I can direct attention to me, alert people I am turning in a corner, and gawd forbid, don't take my right way..

I still have my initial 2 watt Cygolite Hotshot that attaches to the rear of my Topeak rack. This is a second identical light that attaches to the rear of my helmet. It isn't too heavy (55g) and I think it is a good supplemental light. More is better.

It is so important to have a light that YOU CAN USE TO SEE EFFECTIVELY. The key words are "see" and "effectively". A light that grabs the attention of drivers are important as well. The helmet light I use does that trick. I run one on the bars to always shine on the road in a set position. The helmet light goes where I need to point it. If a car is coming out or turning toward me, I can do a quick "wake the he11 up" flash that gets their attention.

As you can see I do everything that has a low budget!

I use this one:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Bike-Front-H...item2c6862669b

And this one, both of them are twofish lock block CLONES! Check out those prices on the mounts.. and this is the one I use with my bigger 26650 lights on my handlebars.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/V2-LED-Flash...item3a7a8fe201

I cut a little part of the rubber off the bottom of the mount when I use it for helmet mounting. For the price, I usually order about 5 of them at a time. Free shipping is included.

Edit. This one is buy it now, for $1.65 free shipping. the above was auction..
