I have had the chance to ride in a hurricane force tail wind and it is like riding nirvana. You can easily hold 30-40mph.

Now I have also faced the same winds head on and you just cant pedal against them at all.

My job sent me a message saying that finance and IT needed to be in the office but EVERYONE else could take the day off!!! How nice, no pubic transit at all into New York City and since I live in Jersey, there is NO WAY I'm going to spend the night sleeping on my desk. LOL! I just can't get over that robot message saying I had to work today! LOL!

They said the storm hits ground at 5-6 this evening so it's not over yet! Take care everyone.

The funny part was watching cars try to go across this one street on my commute that was totally flooded. All I need to do was to pop up on the sidewalk, go across the grass and wave goodbye to everyone. he he he he

I just got a ride. It was a little rough in NJ, not worth taking a chance. My job closed early anyway.

I bummed a ride this morning. My work is closed due to state emergency. Wednesday looks promising so I'll be riding again. I am already suffering from withdrawal.

My taking to the sidewalk on the way in to avoid the big endloader looks pretty tame compared to that.

I know what you mean. Thats why I had to get out for a ride this morning.

I am wondering what tomorrow morning will bring when I commute. he he he

I drove to work for the first time in months in anticipation of Sandy. In hindsight, it wasn't that bad here. I've done the commute in worse weather and was wishing all day long that I made the ride. I'll play it by ear tomorrow, but Wednesday I have to drive to make a mid-day appointment.

I missed my bike today.

The only thing I noticed was the higher winds and the wind direction too.

I slept in figuring on driving in today, then woke up and got ready to drive, put my hand on the knob and the boss called to say don't come in. It didn't look all that bad but there were a few bridges flooded. The main limitation is the Lancaster mayor issued a state of emergency before dawn preemptively.

My shift end a 8 pm, the wind picked up a lot of speed since this morning, I'll probably have a 60-65 km/h tailwind on my way home. It will be by far the strongest wind I've ever encounter. I can't wait but I'm a bit nervous. My wife called me at work and offered me to come and pick me up with the van. I know she think I'm crazy but she just whispered very loud and didn't say a thing (one of the reasons I married her)

Careful with the side wind, especially the gusts. I thought I would have a killer tail wind on the way home from work but it ended up being more of a side wind.

Going to work was ok except the wind which almost made me give up. The ride home was slow and the SCT was cover (lots of trees down). Might do it on tues also (if job opens).

Not to sound inconsiderate , but was it upgraded from a cat 1 ?

Drove to work yesterday while Sandy was over NC but decided to drive today despite wrap-around winds and rain from the back side of the storm. Fortunately the rain had stopped by the time I left for work, but I battled stiff headwinds all the way to work and the coldest temperatures since last spring. To add to the fun, my rear tire flatted half way to work and I had to fix it in the dark. It was easily my toughest commute of 2012.

Finally the wind was swirling in all direction but mostly a tailwind, I kept an average speed of 44-45 km/h for a distance of 10-11 kms but there was also a few times at 12-13 km/h barely moving forward. It's was very cool.

This morning big crosswind/headwind but I still managed a 23 km/h average speed.

even though the real action of this storm is out on the east coast, 1,000 miles inland here in chicago, the marine forecast was calling for 40 knot N winds, gusting to 60 knots, building waves as high as 30 feet on lake michigan. the lakefront path (my commute route) was closed by the city because they rightfully don't want to see some gung-ho cyclist or jogger swept out into the lake by a 30 foot wave. so no bike commuting for me.

honestly, even without the 30 foot waves, battling a 40 knot headwind, gusting to 60 knots, for 15 miles all the way up to my office is more than i want to tackle.

I was braced for the part of the winds they predicted to be there last night, and rode home waiting for the other shoe to drop. it didn't happen, and today was definitely a day for the car.

I rode in hurricane winds when I lived in Florida. The headwind gusts hit me so hard, and slowed me so suddenly, that it felt like I hit the brakes.

Did anyone achieve 70kmph with that tail wind?
