Seriously. I commute by rail, and the Southern CA Metrolink has special bike cars. Among the regulars, almost all are men. At a guess, women make up less than 10%. One semi-regular is an Athena on a toure'd out MTB, another is a 50+'er on a foldie. On the road, most are men, but I occasionally spot two regular women on my route. One a notorious salmon who rides unlit in the dark. I ran into her at a convenience store stop one time and it was clear to me she was not on the bike by choice. I'm guessing it was economic, since she is fairly young, wears the uniform of a private security company, and the bike is a Wally.

Indeed.

So, OP... I see you posted the same thing in the Car Free forum? What's the deal?

There's no way of telling on the internets. I'm a girl, but believe what you like ;) IRL, I see a pretty reasonable mix on the pathways, though it might be more male-dominated now that it's full-on winter.

Doohickie 12-10-12 10:38 AM

I know BF member nkfrench in real life. I'm not sure if she's currently bike commuting, but I know she has. I know a few other female bicycle commuters in real life, including our city planner for bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure; she really walks the walk. I also know a car-free mom... but don't get any ideas, I know her hubby too.

Yeah, but they're only available in crappy acrylic - trust me you do not want that stuff all over your face. I'm making mine out of Superwash wool yarn. I thought about altering the pattern gauge to make it out of some fingering-weight cashmere-blend yarn I have, but I'm too lazy.

IIRC, he lives in Las Vegas, you'd think there'd be a plethora of reasonably-priced options out there for him.

Believe it or don't, maybe living car free has some drawbacks after all. The local ladies may not be that interested in someone who is not interested in spending money on anything besides subsistence living and bicycle related stuff.

Be lots easier to cruise street corners on a bike. But then there is the lack of a back seat, so you'll have to spring for an hourly-rate motel.

The japanese call these love hotels :thumb:

I see plenty of women commuters from April into November, - rain or shine. During the winter, not so much.

Of course it's hard to tell when most everyone's wearing ski goggles, balaclavas, and at least 3 layers of clothes.

True but there has to be a desire to not give an impression as being some without means and/or someone unwilling to spend any money at all. Presumably female bike commuters have interests besides bicycling to/from work.

no motor? 12-10-12 12:22 PM

I hardly see any other commuters, and the few I do are male. And I doubt any of them are here.

I'd actually be more attracted to you if I saw you wearing this. Yeah, I am kinky!

We still do not have nearly enough. When it rains, the ratio men to women that commute, it's basically a sausage fest :(
FWIW, I have a lot of respect for the brave gals out there. I need more people to race!

nkfrench hasn't been commuting recently. She has been deterred by insommnia that makes the early alarm clock problemmatic, road construction that has added a mile and hills to her route, moving to a different office that added 3 miles each direction, adding a morning swim workout on the other side of town, more overtime at work, and several other excuses. The bike ride (~34 miles r/t) and transition time are a bit much on a day she is at her desk 10+ hours. She has a chronic health condition that requires that she gets enough sleep.

Today's excuses: fatigue from a hard ride the day before; sub-freezing temperatures (rare for TX); a cat that yowled much of the night interfering with sleep; a meeting to attend 6:30-8pm; no cable/lock staged at work; no coat hangers at my desk (to hang up cycling attire) nor street shoes at my desk (vs my SPD bike sandals).

However, nkfrench has been active on the bicycle both on club group rides, casual group weekend rides, and riding on her own. She is riding 2-4 times a week, about 300 miles/month.

She would like to get back into bike commuting ... soon ... it is a wonderful transition in and out of work mode.

Ditto.

There are females that participate in all areas here at BF, it's just that:

-Most don't bother to identify their gender, as it has no bearing on general topics of discussion.
-The ladies have their own private forum to discuss any gender specific issues that they feel uncomfortable talking about among the lads. I'd imagine some of the things talked about would make us gents a bit squeamish...
-Maybe the ladies just don't want to attract the attention of some cyber stalking creep?
-And the ladies are undoubtedly smart enough to know where to go if they were single and looking to mingle. <- Several long distance and even multinational couples have met and gone on to get engaged or married after 'hooking up' in that thread. :)

And how exactly do you know this? Have you been hanging out in the bad areas of town, all incognito and stuff in your wooly dwarf guise? ;)

I did work as a Night Auditor for a seedy hotel for awhile. You pick up a few things watching the pros run their business.

loonykathy 12-11-12 01:58 PM

Another woman commuter here. I commute in slightly off hours (10am and somewhere around 6-7pm) so I don't see many commuters at all. Those I see tend to be men, but I did see one other woman this spring on a cruiser wearing a skirt.

kookabura, let me know if you're taking orders for the hats. It's awesome!

Seedy hotels have night auditors?

Solution: Have a bike worth at least $3,000 :thumb:

sci-femme is currently sidelined with some health issues, but normally does 30 mi RT in Florida heat.
