are there any women bicycle commuters here?

I see lots of guys doing this, are there women who do this too?

PatrickGSR94 12-08-12 05:05 PM

What, you trying to meet someone? :p

MNBikeCommuter 12-08-12 05:10 PM

I know of three at my work, but I doubt they're members here. :-)

Siu Blue Wind 12-08-12 07:21 PM

Nooo.. I think commuting is only a guy thing.

agent pombero 12-08-12 07:23 PM

Portland is full of beautiful commuting ladies :-)

Daves_Not_Here 12-08-12 07:44 PM

I'm not a 21 year old nubile sweetie looking to meet an older man in lycra, but I play one on the internet.

agent pombero 12-08-12 08:30 PM

Are you the older man in Lycra?:p

eofelis 12-08-12 08:44 PM

I ride 4.5 miles to work most days, year round.

tabriz 12-08-12 10:44 PM

I commute 18 miles round trip and female.

zacster 12-09-12 05:45 AM

There are lots out on the road, but few post here.

agent pombero 12-09-12 10:21 AM

Who knows? Why is the default member on a forum assumed to always be male?

wolfchild 12-09-12 11:59 AM

I am sure that the majority of women commuters in various cities, don't post on bikeforums. They got more intersting things to do then advertise themselves on cycling forums.

I use my bike to get to work often. I live 19.5 miles from my office. In the mornings, I ride 3 miles to the bus stop and take the bus the rest of the way in. I loathe riding the bus, but it's the only way that bike commuting will work for me the way I want to do it. In the evenings, I ride the entire way home.

I do this at least a few days a week all year round. I avoid rain, hot and humid days, and really cold temperatures (I have not yet found a good solution to keep my fingertips from tingling painfully in low temperatures). I know that there are solutions for riding under all of those conditions, but most of those solutions do not really appeal to me, so I drive to work when I need or want to.

i've been bike commuting in some form for about 4 years now, only working up to riding all the way home in this last year or so.

Bikeforums is actually the first message board I've been on that's been majority-male, so I tend to assume anyone on the internet is a woman until proven otherwise.

I have one of these:

And currently have one of these on my needles:

...just so I can avoid the moronic questions and comments I get when people realize I'm a woman.

Love that! They have it in blond?

droy45 12-10-12 08:04 AM

To be honest, I have never seen any on my commute even in the summer. It's harder for women as they have hair and makeup to do or redo when they arrive. I can understand that, my wife wouldn't be caught dead commuting if she worked outside the home.

It's a knitting pattern, so you can make it in any color yarn you want.

Weird. Most of the people I see in the bike cage at work are other women. Of the cyclists in the department where I work, the women commute by bicycle the most, the men all make excuses (except for the unicyclist - he lives close enough that he walks) or are roadies worried about "junk miles." Stats for my city say there are more men who ride than women, but since I commute through the campus area, I see about 50/50. Then again, I commute in at midnight and more women than men have lights, so there might be whole herds of ninja-dudes zipping around that I'm oblivious to.

Around here, cycling is considered extreme, especially commuting. Only a few of us diehards are doing it and I have been a lone wolf since the advent of winter setting in.

There is plenty of women commuter out there, although maybe not so much of us here. I take the train as part of my commute and seen plenty of us out there on the road with loaded pannier and commuting on a daily basis. There is a significant drop during the winter month as compare to dedicated year round male commuter. I have spoken to a few ladies who commute by bike while on the train and I get the usual question asked about my setup. I told a few about this forum but usually it is unheard of mostly from those I have spoken to so far. Ironically, it was the google search that I did several years ago wondering if a backpack was better than a pannier which got me to this forum. Since that time, I learned much here and I personally feel others women can benefit the same as I have.

That is awesome. I love it!

Mr. Hairy Legs 12-10-12 09:22 AM

There were a couple of regulars on my commute before the time change, but now it's just a small handful of dudes left.

I always like seeing women on my commute. Actually, I like seeing them anywhere :p
