As I was wrangling my bike out of the office, I managed to break the bracket for my Niterider Solas taillight, argh. So I immediately called them. Without any further ado, he said they drop a new light mount in the mail tomorrow, no charge. So good on their customer service. Riding without a taillight made me a little nervous however.

I know how we all feel about being told to "get on the sidewalk" (not that it would happen here; it's throughly and totally illegal, and even drivers wouldn't think of saying it), but is it OK to yell it at pedestrians? I was riding down the street in the bike lane, quite narrow, and some guy was jogging down the middle of it, so I rang my bell. Nothing. I yelled, "Excuse me!" and still nothing. I just needed him to move six inches to one side. In the end I manage to scoot around him, but it was tight and I think I might have been a bit rude (not that I said anything). But what was I to do? Needless to say, he had something plugged into his ears and was oblivious to the world.

I have had this happen many many times....this morning in fact. One time there were two of us on the bike lane with a runner approaching...we dont move and he gives us the WTF look. I don"t get it...and I am a daily runner.

Needed one more ride to top 800 total miles for April. Yesterday it was pouring buckets in the morning, so I drove. This morning looked great when I got up, warm temperatures and nothing showing on the radar. When I went out to get the paper, I noticed it was very foggy but it had lifted by the time I was ready to leave. However, it had started lightly drizzling, even though the radar still showed nothing. So I rode to work in the drizzle, which was no big deal except I had just cleaned and detailed my bike over the weekend. My glasses were fogged and spotted up within a mile, so I ended up taking them off. Hopefully it will be sunny this afternoon.

Mild (11C, 51F), no wind but foggy and damp in the air and on the roads but forecast to be 19C (66F) and partly cloudy this afternoon and sunny the rest of the week, woo hoo!!

52F, sunny, decent headwind, slower than usual and I can't use the wind as an excuse just feeling a little pukey. I'm having a really tough time this year transitioning from winter to spring clothes - either over or under dressed in the mornings. I have a 'chart' but don't seem to be trusting it. Hmmm... well, it's supposed to get to 78F this afternoon and I know what to wear for that

According to Garmin, I hit 24.7 mph with a slight uphill on my Brompton, which must be a record for me. I rode in the street, cause there were gaggles on the bike path, and I was trying to keep up with traffic. Spring is a mixed blessing. And the adage, "It never gets easier, you just go faster," must be true.

Once again I saw the bicycle crossing guards. A couple of times now I've seen that the Dept. of Transportation has stationed guys at intersections in my neighborhood (bicycle central in Manhattan) on the bike paths, holding signs saying "Stop" on one side, and "Wrong Way" on the other. He chided me, "You went the wrong way." I didn't. I had come up the right side of the road. The bike path is on the left side, so I crossed over when the light turned red; he assumed I came through the intersection. I actually like the idea that they're trying to instill the rules now that cyclists are coming out in droves (and bike share is around the corner). Alas, I doubt it will be effective. Salmon will continue to spawn.

Last night I came up a few hundred feet behind another cyclist, which is very rare on my rural commute. I'm no racing champion but I can keep a pretty good pace so I tought, as I was about to reach him, that I would meet a new friend but this guy accelerated at one point and was going about 30 kmh with a very strong headwind, leaving me in the dust. My feelings were badly injured. The human machine finally stopped a good kilometer ahead of me for some unknown reasons so I was able to catch up. When I got there my pride was restored: the man had an ebike! ( I definitly need one of these) I checked with him if he had a problem but he told me everything was okay. I went my way leaving him there and 10 minutes later he wizzed by, not even peddaling,wishing me a good night!

This morning commute was nice, with a good tailwind so I covered my 27.4 kms ride in 55 minutes.

It is the pickup drivers around here that are the worst. One fine specimine kept yelling at me every mile until I finally pulled ahead of him and stayed there. Seriously, no one wants a bike doing 22mph on the sidewalk. I guess he didn't care as long as he had the street to himself.

I just find it ironic when someone who is going slower than me (because of traffic) thinks I am slowing him down somehow...

I went for a walk around the neighborhood after dinner last night, and was run off the sidewalk by three guys on mountain bikes. They came screaming around a corner and I moved to the street to avoid getting hit. That was ironic.

I did some yelling this morning. I am sure you all know the scene: line of cars at a light, the light changes, and the lead car doesn't move. Head down, texting.

There's a two block stretch just when I leave work where I sometimes get honked or clipped by impatient drivers; it hardly happens anywhere else. If they squeeze past me, I inevitable pass them half a block later, cause they got stuck in traffic. It never fails.

then i rode through a cloud of gnats so thick it fels like i was riding through tall grass, disgusting

Riding into work was fine this morning, 54 and cloudy, some wind from the east. Going home though the bike felt like lead. I just could not get moving over the Manhattan bridge, and people were passing me. I'm usually the one doing the passing. I just downshifted and took it easy the rest of the way home.

One thing that did happen is that I broke the cheap plastic toe-clip on the right side. I stepped on it to start up and it just cracked. I may just take the clips and straps off as I don't feel I need them for commuting. On my road bike I use Keos, but I don't want clipless for street riding in Manhattan.

My butt hurts. I've been riding this piddly little nashbar FR1 saddle for the last 300 miles hoping my ass would take to it. No dice. Time to find a new seat for my commuter.
