Commute route maps

There are threads in the Commuting forum about "share photos of your bike", "share videos of your commute" and perhaps other similar threads which got me to thinking, would people be willing to share links to Google (or other) Maps of their route?

For example, my Winter commute is: https://maps.google.ca/maps/ms?msid=...31451,0.043044

acidfast7 02-07-13 11:03 AM

https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=S...&lci=bike&z=12

interesting ...

solid green lines = dedicated bike lanes
dashed green = bicycle friendly

show me your green lines :D

I suppose that by the time anyone gets to this forum, they pretty much know their home turf pretty well, and so there's not much need to share commute maps on a national basis. This is the kind of thing best shared through a local club, co-op or advocacy group.

Do you find that stretch of Rittiman westbound to be a bit of a slog, or am I just weak?

I already had my commute saved in map my ride, so this was easier. Technically this isn't my current commute, as I started riding up Carson instead of the trail, but whatever.

I feel sorry for you guys with only one commuting route. There are six I use regularly, each with its own variations and cuts. Variety is the spice, and all.

This is one of my favorites, because it embodies variety. I call it my hills, parks, cemetery, and trails route. About 9˝ miles, about 35 minutes ride time, about 700 feet of climbing.

http://ridewithgps.com/routes/2127727

Starting near the George Eastman House in the Neighborhood of the Arts, it follows residential streets to a chain of hills along the southern border of the city. The parks fall along this chain of hills, as does the cemetery. Then it's through the University of Rochester's River Campus to the Erie Canalway MUP. Finally back to residential streets to the library.

One of the climbs in the cemetery is cobbled. In the springtime, I channel my inner hardman there while the pros race the cobbles in Europe. Of course, I do it with loaded panniers…

Pavé every day!

This climb is a real treat when it's snow-covered and the bike is wearing its studs.

I second that. I am not sure how many routes I have, but at least 6. My favorite is:
https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=B...dirflg=b&via=1

Very little car interaction, I ride along a dedicated path along a creek, through a beach area, along bluffs overlooking the beach, through UC Santa Barbara, then onto the street I work on and into the facility. I can only dream of riding up snow covered hills with studded tires, but I don't dream of that often. ;-)

Agreed. Not to be too paranoid, but I'm much more comfortable showing someone my favorite routes in person than publishing them for world + dog, in a format that will be visible for the rest of my life.

This is the most direct route. There are a lot of possibilities depending on how far, how much time, how much traffic I am willing to go thru. The endpoints are approximate. Mornings I usually go to McD at 7th & Van Buren 1st for coffee.

As with every thread on this forum, participation is optional and I anticipated that some would not like to share the location of their home or office and that's fine.

>> THROWING DOWN THE GLOVES!! <<

The route I posted was the one I use in the winter because I'm just wanting a short route but during the warmer months, I'll use the 16km route below and sometimes, if I have the time and energy, the 27km route.

I was just looking at maps last night to see what a good potential route would be that would not be all main roads. Just need to get the bike to explore them now :)

Notso_fastLane 02-08-13 11:06 AM

I like having multiple routes as well. My route in to work is the same, 4.35 miles. I have 4 different routes I use regularly on the way home, from 8.9 miles to 14.8 miles. The longer ones also have some killer hills (for this old man, anyway). I haven't really gotten out and done some exploring of the backroads and mountain climbs yet.

I like to say I have the best commute in entire area. The main portion of mine:

You can also share your route without giving your start and end points. Mine certainly doesn't end at my house or work, just near enough to get the idea of the commute.

the ironic part is that there are at least 30 bikes chained to the street-side fence/gates per block where I live. want a dynamo? take it! want an Alfine11 ... take it. need some fenders?

thankfully, the neighborhood is well-patrolled with ass-clowns writing parking tickets for Smarts parked perpendicular to the traffic, that real thieves won't enter.

You guys are either in high risk/high security occupations or have been watching too many spy/crime movies. Do you really think someone out there will study your travel patterns and set up an ambush. Maybe a crazed anti-bike sniper?

My argument about sharing routes is that there are so few people riding with similar start and end points. I ride to work via one of 3-4 routes (with some variation, depending on traffic or construction) However I come home by a vastly larger selection of routes, some as long as 40 miles for my 8 mile commute.

BTW- the bicycle route feature on Google routes is pretty good. I entered start and ends on many of my typical rides, and Google often has what I've already found to be the best route. They also allow folks to input corrections and suggestions, directing people away from busy roads or those with lousy pavement or lane width. This feedback loop, if used enough, and make this a great tool for newbies, giving the benefit of the experience of knowledgeable locals.

How do you draw the route on the map?

On cold or very windy mornings I'm very jealous and would give a lot for a 4 kms commute. My shortest route is 27.2 kms (says my bike computer) or 27.4 kms according to google maps. There it is :https://maps.google.ca/maps?saddr=Ca...via=1&t=m&z=12

I use google routes, enter the end points, which creates a route. Then the program allows me to drag sections to alternate roads connecting the route automatically. It works pretty well, but for routes which are very different, I do it in sections, so there's less adjusting.

On google maps on the top left corner you'll see ''get directions'' click on that and you'll see.

Don't be jealous, 4km is hardly worth getting dressed for. A 27km commute in a Quebec winter is seriously dedicated bike commuting. I salute you.
