My bikes spend their idle time indoors in a decent neighborhood, locked to an old iron door in my office, in a house with a burglar alarm. Yes, locked to a secure object INSIDE my house.
Once long ago my wife mentioned the bikes in the house. I told her to pretend they were her cats. Or her shoes. No more bike (or shoe) discussions after that.

I went to school at Michigan Tech. There's basically zero crime there after the first 2 or 3 weeks of class - that's how long it takes for incoming freshmen from the big city to realize that people will not put up with their **** around there, and their roommates will turn them in (and also, there's only 5000 people on campus, if you steal a bike, the owner WILL see it again.
A friend of mine once left his bike outside the student union, unlocked. He forgot to get it before going home for the summer. It was still there in the fall (rusty and with flat tires).

Define public. One of my bikes is parked outdoors (attached to the fence at the back of a parking lot) from November to April. I ride it sometimes, but depending on the weather and my mood, it can go two-three weeks without attention.

Why don't you do a poll and determine how much money the average person spends on BF per year cycling? Or the average cost of all of their commuting bikes, I would wager that 300 USD is really low for a used bike, tune-up, new tires, helmet, clothes, lights and water bottles (all the stuff that would be needed versus the bus.)
In addition, cycling to work every day (800kcals/day), requires greater food consumption (probably 2-3USD/day) ... so 20 days commuting = 40+ extra USD/month, while sitting on the bus requires 0 extra dollars in food. I've done this calculation on the forum multiple times.

It feels really stupid when I go to get my bike and realize it is gone. Sold for five minutes of fear, to some thief.As far as calories go: my job is mostly office job. If I didn't cycle to work, I'd cycle after work for excercise anyway. Plus I enjoy eating, so no problem burining more calories for me.
Not to mention the zen benefit bicycle (and motorcycle) give me, compared to buses and cars (cages).My usual locking time is around 10 hours (at work). It is in a safe place. Locked to the doorman's watch window. It's not a bike parking place, but the doormen know I'm "that lunatic that rides even in snow with a ski mask" and for some reason take special care of keeping my bike safe. This enables me to ride even the expensive bike to work. However, when doing shopping (or pub) stops on the way home, I have to take the ugly commuter mule (which is also expensive, so I lock it really good - cost around 500 euros new, now 3 years old).
Inner city bus ticket is some 20 euros per month, while my current suburban line would cost around 40 euros p/m. Buses work well, on time, every 10 minutes in city, every 30-45 minutes for the suburbs.

And it still makes more sense to spend £500 for a bike to get to work than it does to spend £5000 for a car. That £4500 difference is quite significant, you know, when you're thinking about what happens if you lose your job.

Don't know about you, but beer tastes better while cycling. Even if it is canned or bottled beer poured into an opaque non-breakable covered container with a handle. Provides fuel and enjoyment in one simple package. Of course, in moderation.

I remember being at this one bar. I was only there for about 2 or 3 hours (pretty short for a bar visit). Well I had been givin this old beat up Huffy MTB that was about 3 frame sizes too small for my 6'3" body. I had locked it to one of thoes "NO PARKING" signs. You know, there about the size of an open school binder. It was a cable lock & the pole was about 8 1/2 ft tall. The bloody bike was a total POS & didn't feel going to great effort to secure it was nessarry.
Well......I was wrong! When my buzzed ass came out the pub & saw my ride was gone......I almost bust a gut laughing so damn hard LMAO. I mean who in their right mind would go thru all the effort to take & HAUL a box story Huffy all the way up & over a street sign LOL.
No lie.....if the turd had just asked real nice I would have givin it to him every bit as freely as it was givin to me.

Going to college, I often lock up my bicycle on an outside parking area for about 7 hours. By the time I am about to go home, there are only a few bicycles left that is parking next to mine. Often times, my bicycle is the only one left in the area.
Some of you might have already realized from my post history that I am quite paranoid about thieves and vandals. It does not help knowing that my bicycle is a lone potential target for several hours (even when the parking area is quite nice).
It would comfort me a bit if I know that I am not the only who have to park this long.

I voted up to 10 hrs. I park at work in a modern, hi tech business park. It is pretty secure, and on more than one occasion I have walked off and left the key in the lock.
Depends on the location really. In high school in the '70's I left my Nishiki 10 speed locked up at school overnight (in the "safe" suburban town of Carlsbad CA) and it was gone the next morning. My dad was PO'd. That bike cost over a hundred bucks!
