The actual tubing is rubber-like, very smooth on the outside and seems to feel like a radiator hose in density, only more pliable/soft.
It looks similar to rubber pipe insulation. I'm not talking about the cheaper foam stuff, but the better closed-cell rubber stuff, like this:

David Bierbaum, is that you in the video? There's something funny about it, but I can't quite put my finger on it.

I am in no videos. That is the video I found when wrapping my own bars. I'll agree that video is... strange...

I am planning on re-wrapping my trekking bars tomorrow. I have had wrap and grips and am going to go with double wrap without the grips. Looking forward to clean comfort on the bars.

I cover mine with foam pipe insulation from Home Depot and wrap with hockey stick tape.

I think this just might be the stuff. I've sent the company an email for shipping and will be awaiting the answer.
Also, after all the cool info on this thread, I'm also thinking of trying out something a bit radical... automotive radiator hose (if I can find the correct dimensions) which will be wrapped over by some good quality handlebar tape. If anyone's actually tried this, I would appreciate your input!

Performance has a set of knock off Ergon grips that don't have the aluminum clamp thing that work good on the trekking bars. (they used to be all black, I don't like the red much). I couldn't get the Ergons far enough out on mine to get the brake levers and shifters on and be comfortable for me. I also did a double wrap of cork tape along the rest of the bars.
