Seat Post Rack

I currently use my Diamond Back mountain bike around town and am looking for a rack to attach to my seat post when I have extra stuff to carry. I am thinking of a seat post rack because I don't want to keep it on the bike while mountain biking.

The most weight I would likely carry would be no more than 20lbs.

Like most accessories, there is a huge difference in price from different vendors. Any suggestions or alternatives to racks?

I have a Topeak DynaPack on my bike and my wife has a Koki Halfback. They are trunks that don't have a separate rack. They don't hold a ton, but they do hold a decent amount of stuff. Koki also has a Fullback that I think is big enough to stow a bike helmet. Most good seatpost racks aren't QR, and the ones that are are kinda wimpy as racks go.

non QR could be OK.. you slip it off the end of the seat post when you QR it off.

I don't have this, and it's expensive, but it appears to be better than a seat post rack. Easy to put on and take off, and more likely to stay in place. You can attach it to seat post or handlebar, depending on the hardware you buy with it.

I used a Topeak with the quick release on my road bike for about 3 years.

I'd be very afraid of the panniers catching in the spokes.

How would that happen?

Topeak thought of that. Small panniers no problem, large ones, though....

I have a $15, Schwinn seatpost rack that works fine for strapping stuff on top.

The biggest drawback is that it doesn't have the side pieces like the Topeak rack that 10 Wheels posted. So panniers, which I prefer, are impractical.

I use an Avenir QR seatpost rack that works with panniers (that I use for commuting). $30 shipped and claims it handles up to 10 Kg (22 lbs). Works well (but make sure you really put it on tight if you've got panniers as it will want to twist otherwise).

I believe the best solution is the Carradice SQR system.

good luck. the seat post rack I tried swiveled my seat post as I rode. I had to make braces for it to keep it from swinging from side to side. it was a nuisance and I eventually replaced it with a proper rack.

I'm not much of a wheeler-dealer, but I have two brand new seat post racks that I'd sell for a reasonable offer. One is a Blackburn with a quick-release; the other is made by Pyramid. I don't use them, so I don't know much about seat post racks. If I can figure out how, I will post a photo below!

Thanks for all the great suggestions...I looked through several of the videos that Topeak has online and am really impressed by their products!
Still not sure which I'll go with but now I have some items to research.

Thanks again!
