That's a great background for that bike. Maybe for any bike.

As for the bike itself, I'd say it ticks all the right boxes. I agree that the current fork doesn't do much aesthetically for the bike but I'd still call it hot.

ThermionicScott 08-21-13 11:29 AM

I knew this thread could get interesting since what might make a bike "hot" for commuting/utility purposes might definitely make it "not" for aesthetic reasons. :D

Fair. Bar tape was $1, and the canti cable stop is in the stem, so there's no good "aero" way to route the cable. In fact, I think aero routing is overrated, apart from aesthetic concerns. ;)

This is hot! The matching bar tape and chain are nice touches. I don't usually like gumwall tires, but here it works, in fact, what tires are those? Fenders look good, and points for being an unusual choice, again, which are those? Big commuter points for the mirror of course!

This could well be the hottest bike in the thread so far!

To stay properly in character for the thread, I'm going to have to dock you points for taking the picture indoors and the dishwasher being open! Reshoot it artistically, and I think you've got an "11". That cable is a little distracting too! ;)

Thanks! The tires are Panaracer Pasela 26"x1.75" -- probably not the fastest 26" tires out there, but far better than knobbies. Fenders are a set of Serfas 26" that I got for cheap. I'll no doubt try to get a better shot of this bike soon. :D

Personally I think it kills all the fun. The proper way to enjoy your time abroad is to get there a job for a couple of years, with a close-to-average salary, or get married to a local. Hitchhiking and bicycle touring is still somewhat okay, as it leaves a certain sign on your face. :)

But if you just want to try a good and diverse food then London, Hamburg, FM, LA, NYC should be just fine.

Oh wait, what's this thread called....
Here is my tourer/ winter commuter / kids hauler. It has been posted in 20th already, but was modified again. I am super happy about the fit. Except for a carbon fork I can't think of what else I would like to change.

I was waiting for this bike to show up. Definitely hot in my book, despite the front fender glitch.

DVC45 08-21-13 11:49 AM

This one still on the works.

OK, here's mine. I thought I'd wait until I get a taller stem to level out the basket, but then I realized I'm so lazy it'll probably be 2015 before I get around to doing that.

IGH, Chainguard, fenders...it is almost perfect.

My next major upgrades are going to be roller brakes and a dynohub.

Doesn't it rain there year-round? I have other bikes that I ride when I'm absolutely sure it won't rain. Installing/removing fenders is a PITA and I'm lazy.

The raceblades come off my roadie on May 1st, and go back on October 1st, no matter what type of weather we're having. But I keep the fenders on my utilitarian ride year 'round.

Besides - they're color-matched to the frame and I think they look pretty. :D

Too much of a PITA, and mine (hammered Honjo's, hand pinstriped) look great on the bike. Why take them off? To be more aero?

Believe it or not, that's all summer here. Not so much as 0.01" in a day since June 26.

That's definitely hot. The staging next to those trash cans really compliments the striping.

This could be a great commuter with some modifications (another brake, brake lever that doesn't look like it's about to break off, better brakes). However, it would need fresh paint (at least) to be hot.

I'll be darned -- have I been lied to about the PNW being rainy all the time? ;)

Oh man, that's starting to sound like work! Since the bike is a fixed-gear, I haven't had much need for a rear brake, and I think the angle of the photo is what makes the brake lever look weird. It's perfectly positioned for the drops, where I spend 95% of my time on this bike.

Older pic, but this is the current setup

Unusual for you folks in Beaverton? In Seattle, I usually expect a fair number of cloudy and 65 days, with some showers or the usual drizzle, but it feels like its been 80+ for two months now. We did have a nice 65 and drizzly day a few days ago, it was perfect as my girlfriend an I were setting out for an two day bike ride with an overnighter at a bed and breakfast. Second day was HOT though.

To my eye the headtube is just fine, you're right about us taller folks having a hard time with the geometry looking good to the eye though. I don't think too many points should be taken off for such a handicap. To me, that frames' geometry is about perfect, but I'm very partial to frames being nearly exactly that shape.

http://farm3.staticflickr.com/2808/9...ee2a9ef9_b.jpg

I like it. I like the lights, and I'm sympathetic to the fenderline not being perfect up front, especially because I like those fenders with the classic color shape at the front. You'd probably have to add another stay up front to trim the fenderline, and then that'd put more stress on the fender and probably cause it to crack eventually. Aesthetically, ideally, the rack would be closer to the fender. I like kickstands, and this is the commuting forum, so you get points for that. I usually don't like straight forks, but this one looks good and is sporting mid-fork braze-ons, so points there. Photo framing is acceptable, if uninteresting.

I disagree about the paint. I think for "hot", for the commuting forum, well used paint on a bike that is obviously getting used, is at least as hot as a brand new paint job.

You could trim the fender risers too..
