How does she like the shifters in that position? Which bars are suitably sized for bar-end installation like that?

She likes the shifters. They are precise and reliable, and she much prefers them to the brifters she had before. Those are Soma Sparrow bars, and they are designed to accept bar end shifters.

Kookaburra made me post it: 2011 Lynskey Sportive. I picked it up on CL in October.

What really caught my eye is how well you've done the red highlights. It looks so sharp!

Brennan 01-06-14 10:36 PM

kookaburra, the front basket is a bit large for my taste, otherwise hot.

I feel like I need beefier looking rack on the back to balance out the basket. Right now it's kind of bulldozer-esque.

But it sure does carry a hell of a lot!

I was worried that the basket would interfere with the bike racks on the busses around here, but yesterday I spent some time taking them random places, and all of the different types of bus racks hold it fine. Huzzah!

The Lynskey had the red decals, and I had the red Rubino Pro tires on my CAAD8. I swapped the tires out (they were almost new anyway) before selling the CAAD, and once I started adding to the red, it just made sense to keep going.

Load capacity---FTW!!!!

My eyes are bigger than my little folding basket.

It looks great. I've always like the red/black combo.

I'm reviving this thread partly because I was sorry to see it drift off but also because I just got a new fork and headset for my Kona Jake and I thought this was the best place to share.

What do you think?

So hot. That looks just about like exactly what I have in mind for my next bike that I plan to build up from scratch. Drop bars, disc brakes, fenders, rack. Preferably CF fork.

Any details on that fork? Is it specifically made for use with fenders? I can't really tell how your front fenders are attached to the fork.

It's a Kona Project 2 Carbon Cyclocross Disc fork. You can find a decent review of it here.

It is made for use with fenders, and the eyelets (which are detachable!) mount above the disc caliper. This required some bending of the fender stays (masterfully done by the guys at Sellwood Cycle Repair where I bought it), but I think it's much better than having to space one side way out to get it over the brake caliper. It seems to be pretty stable.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7291/1...3f253fea_o.jpg

The fork has a tapered (1-1/8"-1-1/2") carbon steerer. My frame was made for a straight 1-1/8" steerer with internal cups, but the Chris King InSet 7 headset adapts for that with an external cup. It relaxes the head tube angle a bit (0.73 degrees, I think), but I'm inclined to think that might even be an improvement in light of how I use this bike (i.e. commuting and not racing).

Before I found this fork I was considering the Whisky No. 7, but I wasn't sure how I'd feel about my bike have a "Whisky disc" fork. ;)

Andy_K 02-26-14 03:08 PM

BTW, I'm pretty sure this is the exact fork that comes with the 2014 Jake the Snake (just with different graphics).

PatrickGSR94 02-26-14 03:16 PM

Review link? I think you copied/pasted the same link as the pic. :)

nice ride...but the wheels are aesthetically displeasing. black hed c2s or A23s would look nice on that bike.

gregjones 02-26-14 03:29 PM

That was a good looking bike. It did nothing but get better with that fork.:thumb:

That gets on big HOT!!!

Funny you should say that. I've got all the pieces to build a set of wheels with the HED rims and SRAM X.9 hubs in my Universal Cycles wish list. I've just been wrestling with sentimental attachment because these were the first wheels I built.

I'm also thinking about getting some SKS Longboard P45s to get a little better spray prevention, but I'm undecided between the silver and the black. I think probably black.

Behold my new commuter (and expedition) rig!

http://sheepcamp.com/~ben/pics/IMG_1104.jpg

Can I still call it a commuter if I haven't commuted on it yet? I'm currently a summer commuter, not an all-year commuter.

Still trying to figure out what I'm going to do about fenders and thinking about aero bars. Suggestions are welcome.

I may wind up trading the monster tires for mud clearance and fender coverage for commuting. Time will tell. The flotation and vibration damping are welcome on the off road portion of my commute. My commute is 2-miles off road and 14-miles on the road.

I completely agree. I was going to say both of those things but you beat me to it.

If possible I'd rather ride a 20 mile route, on a road bike.

Energy/time-wise, your right. Years ago I commuted 22.5 miles on a race bike and remember it as being much easier. The alternate point is that I enjoy the dirt portion of my commute much more than the other. I think I'd rather do a 10-mile commute on a mild trail or two track.

There is 15-ish-mile all-dirt option that includes a river crossing and a hike-a-bike that I intend to use one day.

None more commuter.

Hot or not?

I loaned my bike to a French grad student/intern for a few months.

I'll play. It's a horrid picture, but I'll get out and get a proper picture later this week and resubmit.

Your bike is missing a crank arm, so not! Get a nicer photo, and it'll go up in the ratings :)

Andy_K 03-07-14 01:02 PM

Finally got around to taking some pics of my Jake the SSnake in commuter mode. Now it can be judged properly.
