I keep my phone in the bag also. But the thought occurred to me that if the pro riders can pee out of a pair of bib shorts during a race then I have to think that there are a few freds out there who have mastered texting during a rec ride.

I've done it, and talked on it, but the risk of dropping and breaking my phone is the prime motivation for avoiding it. I also don't like to talk while riding; as someone said, it's a cherished time to clear my mind and be alone with my thoughts. No BF for me on the road, either (okay, so I did check in once. At a light. Hot conversation...)!

Bike time = me time .... so no texting because I don't want to take away from my enjoyment of the ride.

If it's an emergency, those people know to call, rather than text.

I didn't either until work gave every employee a new iPhone or HTC instead of an office phone. There are good and bad points to this. I still don't really use it except for internet access when traveling internationally and for my calendar.

Phone is in my pannier, so no. I have seen it though. Usually the cyclist is going about 5mph and weaving back and forth.

My wife has her own personal ringtone, as well as my immediate family members. Anyone else can either call incessantly until I pull over, or just leave a message and wait. As for texting, yeah...I'm nowhere near that coordinated, and not as indestructible as I used to be. I always shudder at the thought of using speech-to-text programs.

I always read BikeForums.net while riding, it's OK though, reading is easier than texting.

I multi task while riding all the time: putting on / removing a jacket, eating, switching from glasses to sunglasses or vice versa, taking pictures with my camera or phone, texting, taking phone calls.

Never in busy traffic though.

On a group ride, a guy was messing with his phone with strava while we started to ride post stop and he hit a parked car and went over the bars. I felt bad for him but sorta funny at the same time.

I keep my phone in my trunk bag usually, and it's almost always on vibrate, so I won't hear a ring/notification.

I have seen people riding on major roads in DC texting with both hands, not wearing a helmet to boot.

I was once ghost-riding a bike with one hand and shifted gears (with a down-tube-mounted shifter) with the other hand, while riding uphill.

I sometimes chew gum while cycling; lock up your kin folk for their own safety!

I see it all the time but it boggles the mind that some of you will text or talk and ride. Are you that important or is the ride that unimportant that you ruin it with using the phone? The ride is to get away from all of that.

a ride is commute for me, nothing more/less. i usually read on the bus or subway ... why not talk on the phone while commuting?

My riding time is devoted exclusively to riding. The only exception is if I'm expecting an important call, in which case I'll stop to take the call. Otherwise, it can wait.

sure, but I wouldn't calling riding "important." my life is very nice and balanced outside of work/riding and i keep it that way on purpose. riding is a little pleasurable, but calling it dedicated personal time is a little extreme, isn't it?

I also love playing tennis, but I don't text anyone between points. Kind of takes away from the enjoyment of the activity.

why sorry ... i go rock climbing and XC/alpine skiing when i want sport. it's green and that why i like biking ... plus the UK bus system is miserable (in the purest sense of the word).

edit: the other less PC way to say it is ... i feel sorry to hear that people find commuting time as personal time/sport ... must be a tough life ;)

It's easy to think you can get away with texting while driving. But on a bike, you're so much more directly subject to every shift in balance, you're so much more exposed and vulnerable...in my case, my sense of self-preservation makes me very leery of messing with my phone at all. I think it's more irresponsible to text and drive, but more clueless to text and ride.

Ive seen it... Never really tried though. I have a hard enough time surviving my commute with all the cars around with drivers that are testing and distracted.
