texting While riding
 

I saw a commuter today, Texting while he was riding. Be honest, how many out there Text while riding?

I'm almost positive that I would crash and burn...so no, I haven't tried it. That being said, I've seen others texting and riding.

I have read a text while riding but if it is something I actually want to respond to, I will pull over before I start typing.

I refuse to walk while actually typing a text. I think I can safely read a text while walking, maybe I could ride while reading a text. Never going to find out because my phone is always in my pannier

my phone is in my saddle bag.

I used to have a strap on phone holder for my top bar. I threw it away when I realized I was riding and talking on the phone. It now hits the bottom of my rear bag.

I'm not coordinated enough, or ridiculous enough, to think I could do that. I have a hard enough time texting while STANDING STILL (damn small keys)!

Saw it once, struck me speechless....... But texting behind the wheel of a CAR, I see nearly every morning while at the bus stop with the kids.

Seem it on the han river path In South Korea. Stupidist thing I ever saw. Riding on a path with thousands of other users, riding no hands, not looking where you are going and texting. Invitation to crash.

I'm not good enough to text while riding even if I decided to do so.

I can ride and text but don't to set a good example. Either pull over or text at stop lights.

I used to until I dropped a Blackberry.

You are not anybody until you can text with one hand and eat a sub sandwich with the other while you split the lane during Friday rush hour... :)

During my rides, I keep a Bluetooth with a single earpiece hanging on my collar. If I get a text message while riding, I'll pop it in and have Siri read the text to me. If my reply is simple, I can use Siri to convert my speech to a text message, (usually, it's just something like, "Right on. I'll reply when I get to the office"). If the conversation can't wait or requires more attention, I'll stop and either continue the exchange or call the person.

I usually stop and text. Although I have sent short messages while riding. I usually answer, and then "I'm riding right now, I'll let you know when I am free." Or something to that effect.

I saw this being done quite frequently while I was in Sweden last week. Lots & lots of people riding bikes to get around there, so probably a very low percentage of people actually texting while riding. Fascinating place - Dynamo hubs, lights and fenders everywhere!

Used to have my phone on the handlebars as a bike computer; would read my texts when they came in then (couldn't avoid it; they popped up and I'd have to clear them anyways to see my cycling app), but didn't respond. Now I have a proper Garmin, so my phone sits in my pannier. My rides to/from work are rare times when I'm disconnected; I enjoy it.

Among the many good reasons not to txt while riding is that it encourages car drivers to txt while driving.

in CPH I see a fair bit of talking on the mobile while riding. usually with an iPhone in the jacket pocket (regular clothes) and through the headphone mic. usually park bike and enter market without a break in the conversation.

in England not as much as the cycle ways are not as good and disposable income is much lower.

I've pulled out my phone to text or make a quick call during the 1 mile section of greenway that I hit during my commute home.
I usually get stuck behind people walking, so I'll check my phone if I heard it go off.

never on the road or in traffic though. it can wait.

Same here... otherwise I would have all the time in the world to text from my hospital bed! :p

I have never really done it. I'm allergic to phone poles and cars. They make my bones break and nose bleed.

If my alerts keep going off, I'll pull over and have a look just in case it's an emergency with my daughter and it's her mom or the preschool trying to get a hold of me. Usually I'm frustrated because it ends up being one of my knuckleheaded golf buddies sending me links from theCHIVE or Buzzfeed.

Though, I've always had an iPhone 4... which did not have Siri. My new iPhone 5s is currently on the way, and I am told Siri will read your texts to you and you can talk a reply to her. So I'm gonna give that a whirl and see how it works out. Otherwise, it'll be how I've always done it.

Some people get annoyed when they find that I don't answer my phone while riding although in this day of texting that is less common... the girls and my wife know that texting is for casual conversations and that they need to call in emergencies and they have their own ring tones. This lets me know if I have to pull over and check a call or call back.
