"Commuting" to me has conotations of anything but driving to work. So I find it's the right term for me.

Remember the trend to say "time-shift" rather than "record" when it came to recording TV shows for later viewing? I suggest replacing "commuting" with "geo-shifting" such as, "I geo-shifted by bike this morning". Other ideas: pedal-estrianated, pedal-pushed, velocipedalled, veloci-raftered, zipped, spoked, spun, salmoned (well, that's a no-no) ninja-ed (also a no-no) bicycled, "two-wheeled it", "reduced my carbon ass-print", "circus-bear'ed it", cranked, cranked-it, cadence-managed, velocentrized, velo-muted, propelled-myself, HPV'd it (sorry purists), "gave the finger to the oil companies", "refused to join the auto-centric scrum", Pee-Wee'd it, vele-ported, "fahrrad-ed it", "fahrradinated", "beat traffic" and "enjoyed my ride".

In most Germanic languages, it has the same route as Pendulum.

Once again, the Germanic languages are more precise

this is exactly why i like the term "bike commuting". in my circle, everyone knows i ride a bike at this point. i just got deep into it this summer and i talk alot about it, ride alot of places. When I say bike commute, people start to digest just how much i ride - because i work far enough away that people unfamiliar with how easy it is to travel 10 miles or so by bike is think its a feat - and they digest that i do it that much, every day (actually, about 3 days per week on average - but i play it up). one of the neighborhood mom's has seen me riding from her car (on her commute) and i think it gets her a little moist. "wow - i can't believe i saw you riding on such a cold/hot day. you must really be getting in shape!" i get to hear from her, right in front of her fat husband. i know it burns him up, too - and that's the best part.

but people that rarely ride really have no clue how easy it is. i tell people i rode from wildwood to antlantic city on labor day weekend. and they're like holy **** - are you crazy? but google it - it's like 35 miles. in other words, a nice afternoon, especially since i had the wind to my back and stopped for "refreshment" in sea isle city along the way.
