Holiday Loot
What did everyone get for the holidays (cycling related only, please)?
Lola, and I got a $100 gift card to Performance Bike, and a Blackburn AirStik SL Pump. Unfortunately, my Mom said she could only find the red one at PB ... :(, but that is okay, we like it anyway. :) |
Full fenders, Ortliebs, light set up, rear rack, gloves, a new rain jacket, and still getting some rain pants.
Pretty great when your parents support your commuting to and fro college! :thumb: |
Schmidt hub and Edelux2 light. My Santa rocks.
|
crank brothers multi-tool, and a lezyne co2 cartridge adapter inflator thingy ding
|
|
A jacket, 2 pairs of shorts, 3 jerseys, some socks, ear warmers, a new set of tires, tire levers, and an Ultegra double crank with the bottom bracket. I doubt I'll use the crank though; I just love my compact double.
|
I got a Schwinn-branded front basketball hoop bag. I asked for something Carradice, or a rando bag. Being that it's from my mother in law, of course I think it's very nice.
|
A trip to Maui. I tried riding to the top of Haleakala today. I made it 20 miles and almost 6000 feet before my legs just gave up. Still by far the longest climb I've ever done, and it is all uphill until you turn around and then it is all downhill.
|
cycling maps in Germany, Austria, Italy, and Hungary!
|
I actually did the buying, for myself, and ordered a Utah Trikes Annihilator 81. This is a recumbent trike, built from a Catrike Villager, with oversized (24") front wheels and a 26" rear wheel with rack and fender and an 81 speed system made possible by adding a 3 speed rear hub into the normal 3x9 gearing that is found on one of these trikes. My wife rides a trike now, and I wanted something that we could ride along together....
Tractor Tom in Okeechobee, FL |
I don't believe that I've ever gotten anything bike related as a gift, ever, unless you count cash. Typically the only gift that I'll get in a year is a new sweater at Christmas (not suitable for cycling).
I wouldn't even know what to buy myself if pressed. I'm pretty much OK with what I have now, and anything that I would want I would only buy after a lot of research so it's not likely that anyone else would be able to buy it for me. |
I got a new Showers Pass Elite rain jacket and a Light & Motion Taz 1000 headlight, both of which are getting plenty of use already.

This year I used the gift card from my kids and ordered another headlight and a new taillight from Amazon. The tracking status shows delivered on 12/30 at 11:22AM and states "Left in or near garage door". I don't have a garage, or any new lights. |
Fenders!, bibs, UA base layer, and gloves.
|
Fenders and a cygolite hotshot.

However, I allow myself a Christmas budget every year for cycling-related presents from "Santa." My wife does the same thing with clothes that she wants because I could never pick out the right apparel. |
My commuter bike is a tool to get me to work, as is my car. Don't really want or need any bike or car related gifts.
|
Gift-selfies ..
I like Hub Dynamo LED lights so much I equipped my Brompton with a set. but it was done before the winter solstice. Xmas, Ortlieb sale at shop in PDX, included the Brompton O bag so I got one. |
A $100 gift card from Performance. I'm not sure what I need yet, but something will pop up later.

People don't give me bike stuff because I asked them not to -- silly for them to pay retail on something I can get near cost as a shop employee.
To that end, I gifted myself a new bike. Pake Runrunner SS/FG coming to me in parts and pieces over the next week or two. Roller bike for the winter, fun bike for the Summer. I may have to move someplace flat or which has a velodrome... |
Sadly nobody gave me any bike related gifts, guess they are intimidated on picking out the right thing, and nobody thought to check my amazon wishlist (or got overwhelmed as it was a bit long). Maybe I can make it simple and obvious for my wife next year :)
I did give myself a gift though, a Wahoo RFLKT+ and a cadence sensor to try recording states in my iPhone (ordered this on black friday weekend sale). I also got some money that I am planning to use for something, but still trying to decide what. I have a number of things on my wishlist, but practically there are probably other things I need first, like a new set of shoes to commute with or a better lightweight jacket that breathes really well. |

So how do you like the Taz 1000? I have thought about that as a higher power alternative to the urban 700, but not sure how much of a difference it would make.

Do gifts to yourself count?

Peter Mooney bikes sure are nice, aren't they?
I got a print (wall hanging) from my wife, made my an artist friend of ours. I got another print from my daughter. Both are of bikes, of course. |
