Cool morning, sunny with a strong tailwind.

Monday Monday, can't trust that day
Monday Monday, sometimes it just turns out that way
On Monday morning, you gave me no warning of what was to be...

What kind of idiot (has two thumbs and) breaks spokes on the non drive side?

After forgetting about a dentist appointment last Monday and having to take off the rest of the week back on it again. Those hills were just too much even though it wasn't much further. At 800 miles but waiting on 1k to get another bike which will help out alot. A bit cool this morning but uneventful.

cold ride tem in low 40's F only part cold was my fingers.still wearing fingerless riding gloves. time to brake out the lobster claws.other than that nice ride.did have a cars hubcap go flying by after they hit a bump in road at least it missed me.

I had a nice ride this morning. I got a number 2 on a segment to be tied with several others. It is some ridiculous short downhill segment and there is little time separation. The number one spot seems not legit since it is about 10-12 km/h higher than the number 1 spot; but the rest of the persons ride looks legitimate. I think it is a old phone gps error.

I then got on the flats and was just putzing along. I had a large cube truck following nicely who I waved past only to discover...

he was the perfect speed on the straights for me.

I was able to get a sweet tailwind from him (draft) that pulled me nicely along at 40 km/h or so. I kind of feel bad moving up so far in my strava rankings on the segment but I am only in the top 60 of 1500. I must now struggle with personal strava ethics and my personal pain of knowing it will take a lot of work to get there on my own. I think for now I will leave it and use it as a training goal which must be broken.

Funny you mention this; I was waiting patiently behind a guy on an e-assist bike at a light on Vanness to cross Boundary (mention the location as I know joeyduck is also from Vancouver). Get shoaled by this one guy further back, so when the light changes, naturally I am going to put him back in his rightful place (behind me). Little bugger was drafting off the e-bike! I was hauling ass to try & keep up, and managed for about 4-5km, catching up to them at lights. Then when we start going down some decent hills (5-10% grade, probably losing ~80m of elevation in total), I realized the shoaler is on a fixie... recognized him trying to stand on his pedals to slow himself down on the hills. Felt like his drafting was a bit more justified then (though still infuriating). That was tempered by my impression that it's stupid to commute on a fixie across Vancouver in those kinds of hills.

I broke a cable on my old mtb one ride and had to ride single speed home, that was bad enough. The broken cable compounded the fact I was riding my extra bike due to something else being broken on my main commuter.

I do not think I would enjoy that commute on a fixie, maybe a single speed. But I like my gears since it is better to haul my gear.

I was very proud of myself on Tenth between Clark and Fraser I caught and passed a e-assist bike; they are fast buggers.

Radio said, 10C/50F; my indoor/outdoor thermometer said, 6C/43, so I dressed for 6C and, it turned out, the temps were probably closer to 10C so I was really hot and sweaty when I arrived.

Tomorrow is a staff meeting away from the office at a golf club but only 12km away, not my regular 22km commute. I've asked that our organizer check that a secure place be available for my bike.

ill.clyde 10-07-14 07:28 AM

Clear, around 47 degrees ... decent cross/head wind this morning, but not too bad.

Uneventful commute, had a great pace this morning.

Broke out the fleece skull cap for under the helmet. Was a little sweaty when I arrived, but was a good choice.

spivonious 10-07-14 07:58 AM

First ride in over two weeks! It felt good to get back on the bike. The first week was vacation, the second week and a day was a wrist injury (fell on it during a roller hockey game). My wrist is still a bit wonky, but it's healed up enough that I can use it without instant pain.

Someone spread gravel all over the shoulder on the main road I take in to work. I'm not sure why.

Oh and since I wasn't on here during the end, I finished the NBC with 2784 points (1144 miles over 82 days).

dramiscram 10-07-14 08:13 AM

13°c, heavy rain but a very strong tailwind, Wind gust up to 65 kmh. I will probably have to fight against it tonight on my way home. tabarnak de vent...

PatrickGSR94 10-07-14 09:22 AM

Headwinds this morning made for a tough ride.

Also had some azzhole blatantly run a stop sign at a T intersection, where I was on the main road along the top of the T and he was coming up at a side road. Good visibility from my direction, so I could see him approaching at probably 40-50 MPH and he probably didn't even get under 30 MPH as he rounded the corner to come towards me. Visibility in my oncoming direction was bad for him due to trees, so he really had no idea if any cars were coming the other way. Idiot. If I had been going any faster he would have broadsided me. My guess is he just didn't want to wait at the stop sign for me to pass, but instead wanted to beat me around the corner.

principia 650 10-07-14 10:11 AM

nice warm ride this a.m. temp around 50F.shower this afternoon?and tomorrow looks as if it will be wet.

RidingMatthew 10-07-14 10:15 AM

riding home last night I saw 4 wild turkeys cross the road. No that is not slang or derogatory but real turkeys. I was surprised and it was so cool too. One of the many benefits of riding a bike to and from work.

I was home and my wife pulled into our driveway a min or two later. I did not even have time to text to tell her I had made it. I look around the house and tell her I am home ;) she says glad because I -40 going east and west were parking lots which would explain why people passing me on the back roads were more agressive than normal plus higher volume too.

drove today tuesday I cant ride due to obligations but hoping to ride the rest of the week. plus it has warmed up again 55 this morning instead of 45 like monday.

joeyduck 10-07-14 10:50 AM

I had a great ride this morning. We got out of the house early and traffic was light and the sky was clear.

It amazes me how slow some people are through intersections. I was behind a young lady who was so slow to get through the intersection. I prefer to zip through them but I could not get by her

I had a nice ride after droping my son off also. I went by two coworkers waiting for the bus. They were amazed how fast I was going. I was coming off a downhill where I hit near 70 km/hr, so I was probably going 50 km/hr when I passed them.

I find this weather (15°C) fairly unpleasant to ride in. Warm enough to sweat when I get going but not warm enough to dry my shirt at all so I get to work soaked.

You need a GoPro so your son can show his class what his commute to school is like.

That is a great idea. I think he should wear it though.

I will pitch the idea to my wife; I have been wanting to get a front and rear but I cannot justify it.

I had forgotten that the slow woman at the intersection was so slow that my son started to push me from behind; he does that when he wants me to go faster or to help me up the hills. She was that slow.

I passed a fenced property one morning with a few turkeys inside. I made a "gobble-gobble" sound, and one turkey did it right back. I made the sound again, and the turkey made the sound right back again! :P

Another day when I didn't expect to ride, but a server got delivered to the office, and I had to go in to receive it. I have a cold and am feeling pretty crappy, got very little sleep last night, but the ride in was very nice and helped cheer me up.

The commute was a mixed bag today. I came in on my new (to me) motorcycle, and that was a blast - I'm having fun riding a motorcycle after a gap of 11 years. However, the reason I rode the motorcycle is because the bicycle brake is jammed after a fall from its parking spot in the living room and the mechanics forum suggested that this may be because the brake arm is twisted. Not sure I'll be able to fix this at home, and if I have to take it to the shop - well, then no bicycle commutes for the rest of the week :(

Great commute this morning! Knee is feeling less sore (12 weeks out from ACL reconstruction) - I can stand and mash a little bit. It was calm out, but still a tad warm. The best part - Making all 18 traffic signals (although I did have to slow down significantly for one)!

As long as your feet stayed on the pedals, it counts!!

GREAT ride home today; decided to add a few kms onto my ride by taking the scenic river route, making it about 27.2km instead of 21.8km. After being away for all of July through September, got back into riding last week and gave 'er hard while the Vancouver weather is still nice. Was lamenting the lack of Strava Achievements... well, got 22 on my ride home today, including 9 smashed PRs from my peak form in June :-)

Feelin' gooooood!
