I'm thankful to be feeling a lot better today but I'm still not 100% by any means. I can walk level without a lot of pain. Stepping off curbs is still bothering me. I'm not bike commuting til at least Monday, and even then I'll wait to see how I feel.

Beautiful weather for commuting except for the persistent headwind, but I'll take that over rain. Yesterday I topped 30,000 total bike commuting miles since I started in 2007!
|
Mild temps, 9C/48F (hmmm, I used to call 9C cold, now it's just mild, in another month, it'll be warm) with a bit of rain.
We're getting lots of rain (relative to regular autumns), ground is saturated, creeks are overflowing, low points in streets are huge puddles. My commute avoids most of this but there were a few pylons set up sometime yesterday on one of the roads I ride on where there is a drainage ditch to the left (that was full of furiously running water this morning) that runs into a culvert under the road to a lake on the right; maybe the road at the culvert had been overflowed but it was fine this morning. |
First ride of the fall where my fingers got cold on the ride in. 47F at the start, but gonna be 70F by the afternoon. No traffic issues today. I left early enough to add a little bit on a MUP covered in fallen leaves. It was dried out from the rains earlier in the week, but I still took the wooden bridge slowly. It has a bit of a turn on it and is pretty covered in leaves. I can just see myself going down on that combo if I was going faster.

Congrats on the milestone tarwheel. That's fantastic.
Clear and 51 here this morning. Really a nice commute. |
Got dumped on by a downpour on the ride home yesterday. I was wetter than I was the day before when I rode through 8 inches of water at 20mph. It felt very nice to get into some warm dry clothes at home.
Absolutely gorgeous this morning. Low 50s, no wind, sun shining. |

Send some of that our way, our reservoirs are empty. NOAA is forecasting average weather for the next three months, which would be a huge improvement.
Congrats tarwheel on the milestone! That is a lot of miles. Do you separate commuting mile from your touring miles? a great ride in this morning. I went with a balaclava this morning instead of the skull cap and probably could have used the skull cap. my glasses kept fogging up, i eventually took off the arm warmers and balaclava. Supposed to be mid 70s on the way home :) |
@tarwheel Awesome accomplishment. I hope in many more years to reach that total; at which point you will be near 100,000 miles.
Yeah we all have to careful on the wet leaves these days. I slid my back wheel along a half an inch high lip with leaves. It is never a problem but it gave me something to keep thinking about. I have to be careful at a park near my house; the trees are dropping horse chestnuts and leaves like peletons drop me. And I is a bit treacherous on the turn bumping and crunching over them. I saw some rabbits munching on the side of the road yesterday, that was pleasant. I had another car park in the bike lane. I had an awesome time up the hill, not any PRs but as fast as traffic the whole way. I kept catching up with the same group of cars (I noticed since one was a Bentley and the other was a mail truck spewing its exhaust and i feared he would right hook me everytime). Then I think I had a guy in a shiny Escapade yell at me for filtering up to make a left turn at a poorly timed light. A nice rainy commute this morning. Uneventful, I used the bike lane to bypass an accident on the bridge. I enjoy riding in the rain. EDIT: it was a shiny Escalade not escapade, fault of auto correct. |

Back from vacation (sunny utah) and first am commute today.
Light rain, dark, 20 mins of headwinds out of a 50 min commute. Lots of blinkies, but I'm still missing my two blackburn flea lights. :( Still wearing a thumb spica splint. |

Doing the actual math it isn't that bad. It is about twenty miles a day? I ride between 14 and 22 miles a day now. I have just over 10,000 km on my bike after four years but I must remember that is less than two years of commuting. I never kept track before that. |

I remember reading a cycling-inspirational quote about lining up for a group ride in Europe with old men who had big bellies and 750,000 miles in their legs. |

Congrats on your amazing mileage. You've more than circumnavigated the earth. |
Took a little spill on the way home. Saw a wrench in the gutter, slowed down, tried to jump onto the curb as I slowed. Front tire slipped back off tho. Nothing hurt but my pride. Rush hour, at least a dozen or more cars where they could see my lack of skills. :)
Was hoping it was a 1/2"-9/16" but it was metric. |
I had a rainy commute home, but I loved it.
I enjoy the rain until about 5°C |
32 degrees here in SE Pennsylvania this morning, commute was excellent. First relatively cold morning so far this season, it was clear and calm. Perfect.
|
Suffered with a sore lower back, just on the right side, yesterday afternoon, evening and a bit through the night, wasn't sure how I'd be on the bike but I was fine. A bit cooler than forecast, it was 2C/36F with light precipitation that felt (and sounded) like melting snow pellets in the early part of the ride and melting snow flakes in the later part of the ride. I started off with my skully on but within 15 minutes (at the point where I hop on to the highway) I took it off and was fine without it (initially, I felt cold and wondered if it was the right decision but within a few more minutes, the initial cold wore off).

Chilly morning - I need to pull out some warmer gear. I hear the forecast for 70F and decide to just suffer through the morning. The ride itself wasn't too bad, but I've been in the office for an hour now and still have a chill. Maybe I just need warmer clothes at the office.
Fall colors are a little more visible now. Still mostly green, but getting there. I think it will be quite colorful by Friday. I'll have to allow some extra time in the morning to get some photos. |
Some light frost in the lower areas this morning for the first time this season. It was also my first commute in wearing my face mask and fleece gloves.
I got honked at in the last half mile of my ride...not sure why except that I was taking the lane in order to not run into the back of some parked cars. Some people just don't think before honking. |
Kinda off-topic, but I just gotta complain somewhere. Threads pop up here and there where folks are worried about their sweaty smells after biking in. That smell pales in comparison to the co-worker that comes back in after a smoke break.

Another cool morning this morning. Today marks the first time I have bike commuted on a Monday. Due to changes in family schedules I am now going to shoot for commuting 3 days a week, Mon Tues and Thursday. That will put me up to nearly 100 weekly miles just from commuting! :thumb: I have to say, I'm ready for the upcoming time change so I get some more light in the morning. That way I don't have to wait until 2/3 of the commute is done before changing my front light mode from night flash to day flash. Day flash is brighter, and also uses less power. |
I had a nice ride in. I did not have to drop my son this morning so I got the shorter route.
Nice and rainy again. I am lucky and it is substantially warmer than east of here, it was about 14°C this morning. So far the only wet season change I have made is show covers and a second front light. I had a nice ride in and a chat with a fellow who live just around the corner from me. I benefits of leaving late; and I say a lot of people out despite the rain which is always nice. I agree smokers smell awful. |
