This morning's commute was another challenge. 34 degrees, headwind at 10 mph, sleet and snow increasing as the 7 mile trek went on. Made me feel like I was standing still. But at least I was warm. Tonight's ride home - 26 degrees, tailwind of 10-15 mph, no snow or rain. Should be a little better I hope. It could have been worse. Last week they were predicting that big winter storm to be over us now (instead it moved north) and we were supposed to get 10 -17 inches of the white fluffy stuff. Welcome to commuting in Wisconsin in November!
|
Turned over 3000-miles on the commuter bike last night! (5300-miles total this year) Cold front came through with strong north winds, so I drove to work today. However, I'm getting psyched up for my COLD ride to the office tomorrow morning. :-)
|
I'm leaving in an hour, and it's down to 48 degrees, stiff north wind, and drizzly wet. I have tights and a wind breaker that I hope keeps enough moisture out, but I forgot my full-finger gloves. This is going to suck. :(
|
Wow, yep, it sucked bad. Pretty much everything worked together to make this the worst commute I've had so far.
My front light was nearly dead when I left the office. I can't believe I forgot to plug it in during the day today. I had to leave the light on Daytime Flash mode to preserve what little power I had left, and it was DIM! It was cold, dark, very windy, and drizzly wet. Also I forgot my full-finger gloves so my fingers were like icicles. 44 degrees, wind chill 37. I took lots of little detours I don't normally take. Took me almost 90 minutes to make it home. |
Freezing rain last night, residential streets haven't been plowed or well sanded/salted whereas main roads are fine as long as you're well away from the curb and therefore significantly into the lane, so I took the car.
I figured that I had a good part of the month of November to get my winter bike together (with DIY studded tires) but that is not the case so I'll be off my bike until either the temp warms to get rid of road snow and ice or my bike is together; I need to finish the tires, replace 2 spokes and replace the rear gear shifter although, in a pinch, I could go single speed for a little while. |
It's quite interesting seeing posts from around the country and the varying degrees of winter.
For me here in North Carolina, it is not winter. This morning was the warmest yet this week at about 48F. And it will be up to 70 this afternoon. The next couple of days are supposed to be colder, but nothing compared what the northern folk are seeing. |
Yes, it's still very warm in NC, but that will change by this weekend. Today is supposed to be the warmest, sunniest day of the week but we got hit by heavy fog this morning. I worked from home for a while and left for work an hour later than usual. The fog had mostly lifted when I left home but I hit some thick patches on the way to work and had to stop and clear off my glasses at one point.
Yesterday was a holiday and I didn't ride my bike, so I was expecting to have fresh legs this morning. However, my legs felt like lead for some reason and it was a slow commute. |
haha NC hasn't received the Arctic Blast of air yet. Just look at the current temps for the SE:

It was a little cold for my commute in Kansas City this morning. 18F (-8C) degrees, with a windchill that gives a 'feels-like' temperature of around 5F (-15C) degrees!
|
Pouring rain this morning, 2° celcius, I was very cold when I got to work.
I'm in the newspaper this morning:Au boulot à vélo : Marc Simard fait le trajet Saint-Césaire/Saint-Hyacinthe deux fois par jour | Isabel Authier | Actualités But it's in french... |
And last week I was on the radio and this is the video they did put on Facebook, it's also in french...

We're a little gunshy about the polar fronts here in Georgia. A coworker was quizzing me about whether I was going to ride later this week, what I would wear, if I had a mask etc, and it finally dawned on me that it was about the forecast temps of around 28-30! We're not catching any of the polar vortex here, except possibly an edge of it 7 or 8 days from now and it still won't be anything like what the rest of you are seeing.
Even so it must have psyched me because for no discernible reason I dressed for 0°C this morning and was stripping things off by the time I arrived. |

Is anybody else annoyed at Weather.com and/or the app and how it shows the day's high / low? Looking at any extended forecast, the website and app show the morning low on the prior day: Thursday: 52 / 33 Friday: 45 / 24 The 33 low happens early Friday morning, not Thursday night. And the 24 low happens early Saturday morning, not Friday night. |

hey now let me unload some books also so I can be lighter!
Yeah I always look at the day's Low number to determine what it might be the next morning. Although I use the Hourly forecast more than anything else. My local NBC station's weather forecast always shows the low temperature numbers in between each day, so it's clear that it's the "overnight low". |
First ride of the season in the 20's even if it was 29F. I should have checked the wind chill but refuse to include that statistic yet, it's too early
|
This morning. 9°C(48 F) 20km/h (12 mph) side/head wind. So it wasn't too bad.
Though weather forecast calls for 3°C with 28km/h head wind this evening. I'll be riding after sunset. |

The translation is good but not perfect as it says that I'm lighter by 60 books (in french book and pound are both spelled 'livre')

This morning was cold by Vancouver standards. I measured-4.7°C on my thermometer. For me being raised in upstate NY that is a perfect winter high.
I had a driver and passenger gawking at me. I did have to stop and change gloves since my fall gloves weren't cutting it. Other than that the only change in attire I have made since July is shoe covers and a merino base layer this morning. I keep my bike outdoors and my lock was frozen though. Hadn't thought of that one yet this year. My ride was great. I chatted with a nice woman for a few km. Other than that the scenery was great with the clear air. Winter is my favorite season. Maintenance note: put on new brake pads. Misadjusted the rears. Almost no lever pull and they aren't dragging. Now I need to loosen the cable. |

I'll take this morning's -20°C temperature and dry over 2°C and wet any day of the week!
