Monday presentations mean weekend work. On the positive side, weather has been in the low 30s and clear, pretty ideal for relaxed riding to and from the orifice.
The downside with weekend commuting is all of the silly cars roaming the roads like drunken manatee: pulling into parking spots without signalling, signalling right then U-turning left, etc. You name it, these jokers do it; maybe cafe-hopping and shopping makes people stupid. One-to-one, I actually prefer the more no-nonsense weekday drivers (although I don't like their numbers). |
The commute in this morning was nice, temp at 32f degrees and clear dark skies. The roads were a wet with no standing water, but I did not see any black ice. A nice uneventful commute!
|
Slight headwind, but other than that a very enjoyable commute. Lower 40s, cloudy skies.
My bike is feeling very slow the past week or two. I think it needs a good washing. |
Nice commute this morning with temps in the low 30s, clear skies and little wind. Tomorrow looks like a trap -- it's supposed to be dry in the morning but a cold front is coming through during the day and rain is likely. Forecasters are saying the rain will pass by mid-afternoon, but I fell for that last week and got caught in a heavy rain. I'll make the call in the morning.
I've been doing long solo rides on Sundays, 50-60+ miles, so my legs have been very tired on Monday mornings, and today was no exception. I don't worry about my speed and just treat it like a recovery ride. This time of year it seems like most of my rides are like recovery rides. |
Fog/mist and 45F this morning.... in Minneapolis, in December!?!? Since it was melting all weekend (nearly all snow/ice is gone), today was a treat to ride the summer commuter (more than one gear, 28mm tires, etc), made for a "fast" and fun ride.
edit - that is the first ride in 5 weeks that didn't 'require' the winter-commuter. |
It rained last night, so the streets were wet again this morning... but it was warm. 52F!
It's supposed to be very windy for the ride home. |
First ride since last tuesday, with had about 30-40 centimeters of snow over 3 days, just enough to keep me off the bike. this morning the roads are clear
|
Chilly at 33F when I left, but I felt fine and it is warming up to about 60 today. Got a full week this week, then just two days next week. And the week after Christmas I'm off all week and heading to Florida.

33 degrees this morning I used my older jacket (Performance bike soft shell) to see how it did in the similiar temps vs my newer Night vision rain jacket. I was definitely cooler and cold at some points but I think that vented much better when I was warm and it kept me from feeling swampy/ sticky under the rain coat. I do know that the rain coat blocks a lot more wind and in turn keeps me warmer. I was toasty last week. THe rain coat is supposedly breathable but not all that breathable. I am not sure which is the best yet, but it is nice to have options. I hope I do get some more riding in this week. I am already above Novembers mileage. :) i like the brightness of the rain jacket for the ride home. LOTS more reflective and built in light :)
It felt good to ride especially when I rolled past my car which I would have had to scrap it off. |
It looks like I wound up with the cool morning for once, 28° when I rolled out. I confess to a bit of schadenfreude, seeing people all bundled up and scraping their windshields as I glide past.

It has cooled off here it was right around either side of freezing this morning. With the cold and some frost in the air I decided to mount my new studded tires last night; schwalbe winters.
I don't think I need them but better safe and I wanted to break them in as instructed. So I took it easy on my way to work. I ran them at 60 psi in the front and 70psi in the rear. They felt fine I don't mind the hum. I kept getting a thump on the rear though, I passed it off as studs and maybe air pressure drop in the cold and the valve stem. Checked at work and a three inch section of bead wasn't seated! I didn't inflate them last night to full pressure and deflate and re-inflate then to desired pressure like I normally would. I got lucky. I'll get it remounted at lunch In all it took about twenty minutes to do the swap in the dark and cool night. So I'll try and figure out what I want to do with them in regards to swapping them each weather change or keep them on for two months. |
Steady rain. Cold and wet. Can't complain, though. We certainly need it.

Wet roads, no rain.
Light rain. No rain. Steady rain. No rain. Steady rain. Light rain. It was enough that I was pretty wet by the time I got to work. I hung my clothes in the coat closet that nobody uses. Hopefully they will be dry enough by the end of the day. It is supposed to get up to 60 degrees today, but that won't be happening unless the clouds clear out. |
Major Metro delays in DC this morning...in an email from a colleague: " I swear I pick the worst days to not bike."
|
Another warm morning with -2°celcius, It should go up to 2°c today. If the weather forecast are accurate I should be good to bike the whole week.
Nice ride this morning, low Wind, very low traffic. |
Foggy this morning so I had my lights going. It's amazing the number of gray cars that drive in fog without their lights on. Further proof that people just don't think.
Rain showers this afternoon. Hopefully I can get home in between the heavier bits. |

I took the longer 12.5 mile route on an icy/snowy morning, keeping me away from most of the automotive Ice Capades. Bonus, catching up with an old friend on the trail and enjoying a 30 minute talk while making our way to work. |

Winds really started to pick up yesterday afternoon (steady 25mph with gusts to over 35mph). I decided I really wasn't dressed for it, and just didn't feel like dealing with that much head/cross winds for 19-miles... so I took the bus home. It was still quite a chore for the 1-mile ride to the bus stop and the 1-mile ride when I got off the bus to my house.
I don't usually commute on Tuesdays in the winter since we have neighborhood tradition of a Tuesday morning spin class. We have a group of 6 or 7 guys that live fairly close, and we ride our trainers for about an hour early Tuesday morning. I'm the only one in the group that commutes, but several in the group do quite a bit of mountain/cross biking on the weekends. I know... we look like dorks riding nowhere fast... but it's a good group! http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=423271http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=423272 |
53 degrees on the ride home last night. I was warm some moments and cool others. I guess i had my layers pretty close. Nice to not have to bundle up. It also did not seem as dark as it has been. I drove today. Tuesday I always do. It rainned which makes me thankful I am driving. I swapped out some stuff from locker and looking forward to some riding later in the week but it is supposed to be cooler.

41F, rain, headwind - yuck. Watching what you guys in Wisconsin and Michigan are about to get forecast to get to us by the end of the week |
Rain and a crosswind this morning. Didn't mind the rain since it was 51 F. It was a good ride. I was literally singing in the rain.

Found that my rear tire was tearing at the sidewall/bead contact last night, so talked to my LBS and bought a pair of Schwalbe Marathons (700/28) for $90; think I get 15% off still having bought my bike there, bringing it down to ~$76.50.
I was lamenting with joeyduck offline that I wish I had the time (or the foresight) to have pre-ordered the tires from Amazon.ca for $59.99 with free shipping. Ah well; even if I spend another $20 or $30, it supports the LBS that I frequent, and plus I can get them today and keep commuting. (N = 1 for me, and will continue to do so for at least a few more years until both my kids are in school and our child care costs go down). |
I had a nice commute this morning. Caught up with a fellow and we chatted about our jobs for the commute.
Whenever I talk while working out I sound like I am having a heart attack and gasping for air. An old running buddy used to get concerned as I was asking to go faster he would ask if I needed a breather. I felt like this guy was going to do the same this morning as I was talking and sounding like I was in respiratory distress. I did just beat the rain though. This past weekend I got my son a new used bike for Christmas. The kid is now at n=4. Am I creating a monster? I am only at n=2. |
