Saw a guy midday wearing a highway safety yellow high visibility jacket with reflective silver stripes a front blinking light he had a helmet with a gopro sadly he was cycling against traffic on a three lane avenue. Glad he had all that high-viz gear on.

Had a bit of rain today, but it was one of those days where I had superhuman strength and endurance. I love those days! Of course, when I looked at my GPS after, I found my commutes had taken the same amount of time as they always do. But I felt faster. ;)

25F / -4C Took a spill on the way home last night..ice is still very much an issue here in DC. And banged my already-sore knee.

Ride in this morning was fine but that ice sits in little patches.

Spring please.

17F and sunny. By the time I got 1/2 way to work I was with 2 other commuting friends, we picked up a 4th shortly afterwards. Pretty cool riding in a pack, though these guys are all faster than me so really worked hard to keep up. Might have to take a nap some time today!

cvskates 03-05-14 08:26 AM

1 degree above freezing and raining at 4 AM when I rode in. I don't mind riding in the rain anymore, I feel vindicated in my wet weather gear purchases :)

Finally a day with no rain, snow or ice to deal with, so I won't complain about the headwind and cold temps. This might be the only commute that I manage this week because I have to attend a meeting with my wife just after work tomorrow and more rain/sleet/snow is forecasted for Friday.

timvan_78 03-05-14 11:19 AM

5degC/41degF and light rain. Lots of different types of rain here--last night was small drops and lots of them, while today was more of a mist. Rain is fine--no headwind and not cold.

I commute underneath a huge crow-roosting site. They are most active at dawn/dusk and some winter days it's like a Hitchcock movie. Some evenings there are clouds of them coming from all directions, converging on this area. I've only had a crow hit the top of my helmet once, but it's crazy. The noises that they make is otherworldly. The wet path gets coated in **** every day, so you have to make sure your mouth is closed when you ride through the area. It's now light enough that they are not there on both my commutes. Daylight savings next week could change that, though.

Stupid manager!!!

I get in to work today to discover that the network is still down (3rd day) so I grab some files on a USB stick, leave a message with the asst manager as to what I'm doing and why (unlike many other employees, I can do about half of my work from home), head home, make some tea and get to work. After about 2hrs at home and getting about half of a day's work done, I get an email from my manager (who is out of town) telling me to go back to work and find something to do. I've been twiddling my thumbs since 11am and although the network is finally up, we're being told not to use it as it is flaky.

So, I'm back at work, doing nothing, except for posting here.

Commutes (yes plural) in today were fairly cold with an average air temperature of -20C/-4F and a biking-speed-adjusted windchill of as low as -34C/-29F (lowest when I was travelling at about 15kmh/10mph into a 25kmh/15mph wind).

I'm still struggling with cold toes and fingers. My toes, I can sort of understand because my boots have a mesh on part of the top of the boot and wind can get through (I'm scouting for replacement boots for next winter) and despite the wool socks, my toes get cold. On the other hand, I think that my fingers shouldn't be cold: I have decent mitts on my hands so I'm a bit confused. Maybe I'll have to seriously consider a set of pogeys for next winter.

a bit rainy but fine. all of a sudden i am fast - does commuting through winter pay off - i wonder

dcb23 03-06-14 06:03 AM

24F / -5C, fairly brisk crosswinds, and still hardpacked snow/ice in some inconvenient places. Had to walk the bike through a few of those.

acidfast7 03-06-14 06:18 AM

quite pleasant!

jrickards 03-06-14 07:50 AM

-20C/-4F with a bike-speed adjusted wind chill of -33C/-27F but nice and clear and sunny.

Different gloves today, still cold fingers but 2/3 the way into the ride (20min or so), my hands started to feel warmer. Not sure what I'm going to do, those were my last resort (other than borrowing my son's $100 Burton mitts, which I might try just to see how good they are). Next year, POGEYS!!!

New boots last night, reduced from $130 to $60. Toes felt much better but boots are a bit stiff, they'll take a couple of weeks to fit properly.

Tomorrow, a high of -1C/30F but snow.

spivonious 03-06-14 08:54 AM

First ride in a while. It was around 18F when I left with a light headwind. Felt very sluggish and was 4-5mph slower on all segments of the commute. I hope the weather stays nice so I can get back in shape. It's supposed to be very seasonable next week, with high temperatures in the upper 40s.

dramiscram 03-06-14 09:43 AM

Cold morning with -25° celcius without the windchill factor. Very bright and sunny. I will probably have a warm -14° celcius tonight on my way home!!! I hope it'll get warmer soon...

timvan_78 03-06-14 03:00 PM

Warm (9degC/49degF) and raining. The creek is swollen onto the MUP, I rode through the BB-deep water.

This morning I hit 10,000kms commuting since i started about 2 years ago. Gas here costs $1.40/L (which is $5.30 CDN/gallon).

AdamDZ 03-06-14 05:16 PM

First post in a long time and yesterday was my first bike commute since early December. First winter in a while that I stopped riding, just couldn't take the cold any more. Yesterday was upper 30s and sunny and it felt good to be on a bike again, but cold again today so I drove, but tomorrow should back above freezing again. Crazy winter, insane weather.

walrus1 03-06-14 10:26 PM

Saw a gentleman on a folding bike today who was only wearing a hoodie and cargo shorts... in 32° weather with wind. Verizon appears to be tearing up the streets in my neighborhood and doing really poor job of repaving them. I'm sure the city will get right on that sometime in the next decade or two.
AdamDZ I found today pretty comfterable compared to biking home from class last night. You should have cycled today!

Haha I know exactly what you mean, BCIT in Burnaby and 4 road in Richmond are both like that this time of year. Kind of ominous.

Just at freezing...NOW I think the final thaw will begin. Have a great weekend all.

-14C, no wind to speak of, partly overcast but forecast of snow starting at noon today but a high of -3C this afternoon (yuck! the snowy paths will be sloppy!)

Summer's almost here ...

I can now see the deer moving around in my back yard.

Yep, won't be long.

spivonious 03-07-14 10:48 AM

Nice ride in this morning. Felt a bit better than yesterday, but still faced a 10mph headwind.

I almost got hit last night. A guy stopped at a stop sign on a cross street and never looked before starting forward. I was in front of him at this point. Luckily he noticed me at the last second and stopped before we had a collision. He got an earful from me, but had that "deer-in-headlights" look.

PatrickGSR94 03-07-14 02:12 PM

Woke up yesterday morning to the threat of *cold* rain, so I took the bike on the car and split up my commute between yesterday afternoon and this morning. We ended up getting very little to no rain yesterday so I'm wishing I would have done the whole commute yesterday and left the car at home.

Riding home yesterday was okay, had a little headwind, about 39 degrees. This morning (clear) was colder than yesterday morning (cloudy), which is why I wish I would have ridden in yesterday morning. Felt really sluggish this morning. I am SO SICK of having to get all layered up for a 15 mile ride. I really think I will feel and be faster when I can just throw on my shorts and short-sleeve jersey and go.

One thing I did on this commute round trip was use just some lycra boxer briefs under my tights, instead of my usual LG cycling shorts. I actually felt less pain when I got to my destination each time, I think because there's less friction. I don't know, I never used to have problems riding up to 40 miles in cycling shorts, but in the past few weeks just going 15 miles has made for some red irritated areas. Not sure if it's because of the colder weather or what.

Near freezing and rain so I took the green "forest" bike, http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=367648 and so just wore my jeans and sneakers, thinking to save time by not changing. It was a miscalculation as I was soaked from ankle to shin. At least I thought to wear shoe covers :o

Today was my first day back to commuting by bicycle in about four months. It was a long winter hiatus. I just could not bring myself to ride during the seemingly endless polar vortex in Ohio. Today was excellent and uneventful to and from work.

Ky_Rider 03-07-14 08:29 PM

Finally warmed up enough Thursday for a commute. Still a lot of snow ice and ice on the ground, but the streets were mostly clear. Very comfortable 50F on the way home. Taking my bike to the shop this weekend for a drop bar conversion. Maybe no commute next week while the bike is in the shop. Bummer
