More humidity but faster pedaling minus the rear fender.

Some random updates
Riding home yesterday...I found the police blocking the road and while talking to the rude policeman he told me that the detectives where not finished yet and I could not go through. (not sure what was going on but kinda made me scared to ride through there.)
He rerouted me (rudely) up a steep hill and on a road that 8-9 loose dogs. They may not have been loose but they were coming at me as I rode by. They almost gave me a heart attack. :notamused: I was glad to finally get home. Riding in this morning... the humidity must have been 98% I do not think any of my sweat evaporated off my body. I felt soaked. It felt good to ride and I hoping the sun burns through for the ride home. This morning I was yelled at because I was not in the bike lane "that is why they put it there," she said, "for you to ride in it!!!" She was having a cow :twitchy: Nevermind the fact that the bike lane is on the right and I wanted to go straight through the light (left lane). We exchanged some words. I ended with Share the Road and a smile:). Finally I do have to say that my bike light has been by my wife and a friend while I have been riding this week and both say that it is very effective, even in the bright sunshine. |
Interesting commute this morning ... wishing it was a bit warmer. 59 and extreme humidity and a persistent headwind from start to finish. We've had this fog laying about the lakeshore for the past week or so too, I had to sit up several times and wipe my glasses so I could see.
Coming into downtown and I was stopped at a draw bridge. Pretty unusual, especially that time of the morning. Only other time I was stopped there was once on my way home last year. Riding near the art museum and I see Superman (or a reasonable facsimile thereof) standing outside a minivan, talking to the driver. Summerfest starts tonight .. so I might have to alter my route home. And I crossed over 600 miles commuting this year so far. |

Enjoy the day!!! Bonne fête! The morning ride was ok, there was a strong head Wind. No rain but the road was wet from last night rain, the river is very very high for this time of the year, the fields are muddy, I think the harvests will suffer if the weather keep on. |
Another interesting ride home yesterday. We made national news with tornadoes which didn't effect me other than several hours of pouring rain. So, ride home was wet but still pretty warm and I followed the newspaper in the shoes advice someone gave here recently - worked perfectly! This morning I had dry clothes and shoes, mid 60's, sunny!

Beautiful morning, loaded up and took the long way in. Climbed some hills ( which isn't as much as it sounds with the commute get up), through the orchards and by the horse farms before I dropped down off the bench and got into traffic.
The lake is beautiful and the paddleboarders are already out. Supposed to be close to 30* by the time i head home so will be sweaty. |

Tailwind and light rain. Rain was just starting when I went to get my bike out of the garage, but I figured, "the wind's behind me, so the rain will be behind me, right? Maybe I can stay ahead of it!" I was trying to rationalize riding my fenderless fixed gear instead of my less enjoyable all-weather bike. Well, it was a nice theory, anyway.

Nice commute this morning. I did not have to do the daycare drop but I worked my legs other ways. I had a bit of a tail wind so I tried to make the most of it. But those traffic control systems kept stopping me.
Vancouver also seems to be installing some sort of bike infrastructure at Kent and Cambie. There were new lines on the ground, I have a suspicion they are putting up barrier. Which is a PITA since I turn west on Kent and go a block west then turn left. It means I will likely avoid a bike lane and anger impatient drivers for not being in a separated lane. Anywho gorgeous and sunny. I look forward to a nice ride this evening. |
A nice little thunderstorm just blew through. I watched the radar and knew it would be gone before 5. It looks like I will have wet roads going home, but maybe some sunshine and probably higher humidity as a result.

I thought I was going to dodge the rain, but I got caught in the thunderstorm on the way home. I stopped for shelter as the lightening was striking very close. Yikes! After waiting 5 minutes the rain slowed and I started out again; it was sunny by the time I got home 10 minutes later.

I was more referring to my commute being two general segments to me as a commuter, before strava.

The ones I mean were the 10 or so segments from Nanaimo to Victoria/Commercial/Clark/Fraser. I have also started to sift through and hide those. Also I feel they can be a bit dangerous with rush hour and they are not a section made for racing, in my opinion. I am fine with the hill up after the park at clark to fraser. Though at that point I am tired and slow on the last one.
I do enjoy the 10th from Clark to Fraser segment. I often get roadies or other commuters lurking a few metres back at the red light at Clark, waiting to fly past me (sitting on the stop line) just before the light changes. Then usually by that second hill they're cranking away at 40rpm in big ring, standing in the saddle, while I blow past them at 30km/h sitting comfortably, spinning 80-90rpm. Don't think I've been passed on those hills in a while :-)

Overall I like it and I will adjust it for my regular main road sections where I go faster. It is just sifting through it all.

Big storms rolled through DC overnight...the morning had less humidity and slightly lower temps.
On Constitution Avenue, not far from my office, there was a huge Oak down right in the middle of the road. Must have just happened because there were no police around yet. A guy's truck was sitting right underneath but he looked ok. |
I was not able to commute by bike this am as I am going dress shopping right after work with my daughter. Though the commute last night I was able to take the long way home and it was very nice. Also I will be commuting by bike tomorrow, I already have my pannier packed minus food.

End of day yesterday brought a thunderstorm. It was done and gone before my ride home. Sun came out and all the remaining water went from ground to air. Very humid ride home.
I'm definitely enjoying some aspects of summer: it's light early and no school means less traffic. I saw a deer on the side of the road that must have been hit last night or early this morning. |
A dry ride home yesterday, woohoo! Warmer this morning but felt colder because of fog and humidity. I caught up to 3 other commuting buddies and rode half the way with them. Talking and riding slow things down but it's so much more fun!
|
Big big tailwind last night, made my best time of the year so far. Bad news is the Wind didn't change so I had a big headwind this morning. It's unusual for this time of the year to have a strong northern Wind for 4 days in a row. Is it just around here that the Wind is going wild?.

Going to have to find an alternate route for the ride home for the next week or so.
Summerfest downtown is in full swing and roads are closed here and there, and traffic is insane. I don't mind mixing it up with cars, but prefer to do it at speed. This crawling through downtown just waiting for someone to right hook me or turn left in front of me isn't fun. I don't think I had to deal with it last year because I didn't start commuting until after Summerfest. No commute today ... back at it tomorrow. |
Another cool morning and my fastest ride in this year.

Decent commute in this morning, a little bit of a headwind while heading East but not terrible. I felt like I was really lacking energy this morning but my time was as good as ever and I climbed better than I did last week. Was worried at the start because my back was acting up from lifting the baby out of the crib too many times the night before. Luckily, it doesn't seem to affect my riding much.
Still dialing my bike-fit but getting very close to 'just right'. I made a minute saddle angle adjustment last week I should have made ages ago. What a difference. Now if I can figure out how to eliminate this one little saddle sore that pops up from time to time I'll be golden. |

http://bikeforums.net/attachment.php...hmentid=389575Great commute home yesterday and into work this morning. Weather has been a littler cooler which I like. 85F going home and 70F coming in this morning. I took a short cut through a large farm. I've been wanting to explore this road for awhile. Luckily no one complained. Trying some new panniers and frame bag. So far I like them. Much smaller than my regular panniers. I think they'll work great for the summer. I'm getting hooked on commuting by bike. I got to stop buying bike stuff though!

cool photo. I like how the surly looks so understated and stately. I rode home 11 miles in the rain last night. It was an adventure with some rumbles here and there but over all not to bad besides being soaked when I got home. It was weird to ride in this morning with the sun shining... it has been cloudy all week in the mornings. I will attempt to get fenders installed this weekend. |
I am riding with two mirrors, overcome with a fit of Fredly geekiness I suppose. Because I'm trying out a helmet mirror, a large one :fred:, but what if I happen to ride without a helmet - I still need a mirror so I've left the drop bar end mirror on. People are trying to hide smiles when they see me but what the heck, glad I can amuse them.
Anyhow due to my enhanced rear vision I was watching traffic behind me more closely. They were switching lanes well back, all the way over, every one of them. Even though I'm riding to the right and there's actually room if they don't mind crowding the other lane. The one car that came back for a right turn did so carefully, signalling long before braking with plenty of space. I was almost embarrassed by all the polite driving. What's gotten into people? |
