Good rides yesterday to and from. Summer time muggy is here to stay though. I can't ride without the Head Sweats headband, morning or evening. High of 93 today.

ill.clyde 07-01-14 07:13 AM

Ride home yesterday was steamy ... mid to high 80s, crazy humidity, and I was racing to beat a storm home. Turned out I had plenty of time.

Gorgeous ride this morning. High 60s, low humidity, lots of tree debris from the storms last night, but no problems.

However, WTF is up with people shoaling me lately?!?!?!? About a mile and a half into my commute I see a guy on a side street (runs along side a park, so I could see him easily) coming toward the road I'm on, and as it turns out, he turns right to follow me. No big deal. The road turns uphill for a bit, rather abrupt and steep, so I keep my cadence high and then stand to pedal a little so I can get over the hill. As I coast down the other side of the hill I check over my shoulder and see him, quite a ways back. So I coast/pedal down the hill to the stoplight, which of course is red. Now I had just kept him at bay going uphill quite easily, and blistered him on the descent. And what does he do at the light, yup, plants himself firmly in front of me. He's on an old mountain bike, has fenders and has rear baskets, so it's clear he's a commuter (odd I've never seen him before though). I figure, alright ... I'll give him the benefit of the doubt (this hasn't served me well in the past, but apparently I don't learn well).

And of course he's slow, mashing the pedals, and we're heading onto some of the busiest streets of the commute. I thought, once or twice, about passing him, but what for? I'd already observed him run two red lights after he passed me (and looking back, I don't think he would have stopped at the light where he shoaled me if I hadn't have stopped). So I sit up, pedal fast enough to stay in his draft and let him pull me all the way into downtown. After the drawbridge he peels off to head east, and as I usually do, I go up one more block and then turn off to the east.

Wouldn't you know it, at the next intersection there he is, heading north, but only after I pass through the intersection first.

I don't effing get it. If you SEE that you're slower than me, passing me AT A STOPLIGHT isn't going to make you faster when you start pedaling again!

Wet and lots of debris from overnight storms - wicked headwind. It might be my addled brain but seems like more wet riding this spring/summer than recent years. One of the things I fantasized about over the brutal winter was sunny, hot days of summer. Apparently it's still a fantasy

spivonious 07-01-14 08:57 AM

First ride back from vacation. Boy it was hot. Supposed to get up in the 90s today. I'm not looking forward to sitting next to cars belching hot air from air conditioners.

worktheweb 07-01-14 08:57 AM

Another great ride this morning. A little hot and muggy, but I had another personal best this morning with my fastest average speed ever on this route. Kept it in the big ring for as much as I could and felt great when I got into the office. I've had 2 personal records 2 days -- don't think I'll be able to keep it up, but man does it feel great.

esmith2039 07-01-14 10:28 AM

Last night's commute was hot but you know I loved it. While most of setting in cars enjoying the AC I was sweating like mad pedaling up hills.. helps you feel alive! This morning was cool and the best time which I'm not sure why. 25 min vs 30-35.

PatrickGSR94 07-01-14 06:32 PM

Cool morning, hot afternoon, super humid all day long.

Odd encounter this morning. I was on a 45 MPH 2-lane road, approaching a 4-way stop intersecting a 55 MPH 2-lane US highway. My route takes me straight across to continue on the original road. A guy in a pickup had just passed me (quite safely, a ways back from the 4-way stop), and as he's waiting on other traffic to go, I have to stop behind him. It looks like he started motioning me for him to come around him and go through the intersection. I was thinking "hell no" and kept saying and motioning "no you go ahead!". Finally he opens the door and steps out and asked me about my bike lights (my 2 Hotshots on the rear I assume). I said I got them from Amazon. He asked what they were called and I said "Cygolite", and he goes "huh??", to which I enunciate "SIGH-go-LIGHT" haha :P

Guess I should have just told him to Google "Hotshot bike light". Anyway, fairly uneventful otherwise.

Today was my longest ride of the year. I rode to work at 4:30 this morning in the dark and then left at 4 o'clock and went uptown to get a haircut. I then rode back home. It was around 90° and all in all it was 19 miles. I averaged 16.4 mph. That was my first ride in the dark and I actually liked it. My new Bontrager 700 light was amazing. I have one more ride to work tomorrow and then we are heading to Michigan for 11 days. I will have my bike up there to ride some of the flat roads. I should be nice since all there is around here are Hills

esmith2039 07-02-14 03:36 AM

Last night the wind was out of the west. Guess what direction I travel 3/4's of the commute, had to even pedal down the hills. Mother nature got called every word I could think of! Oh well made it. A bit tired this morning will hop on the bike may just be a bit slower today.

parkersdad 07-02-14 04:59 AM

Very cool this morning on my last commute of the week. I am heading out of town tomorrow.

dcb23 07-02-14 05:07 AM

80F/27C and 77% humidity...just soup to ride through.

tarwheel 07-02-14 06:30 AM

Very warm and humid with temps in the upper 70s at 6 am. The high is supposed to reach 95 F this afternoon with a heat index of 105. Yech. The heat and humidity are really slowing me down this week, which is all for the best. Rode into a headwind all the way to work this morning and it felt great even though is slowed me down.

mgw4jc 07-02-14 07:06 AM

Warmest morning of the year I think: 76F and plenty humid to go along with it. Still a good ride. The black vultures are still picking at the deer carcass on the side of one road. I first saw it about a week ago (last Thursday morning maybe). Not much left from what I can see as I ride by. The birds just look at me as I ride by to see if I'm going to be a threat. There was maybe 7 or 8 of them.

High of 95 today and thunderstorms are possible this afternoon.

dramiscram 07-02-14 07:16 AM

Sunny, hot, humid and windy.

ill.clyde 07-02-14 07:19 AM

No commute today ... my legs were just toast from three straight days of 20+ miles. Will be back at it tomorrow.

Funny thing seen on the ride home last night ... Along the MUP is a place called the Urban Ecology Center, and near there, alongside the trail, they have several garden plots. It's a wide area of the MUP so there's no issues about it, but as I was riding past last night I saw a wild turkey. Not a big deal for many of you, but this is the middle of Milwaukee. Granted, it's a fairly woodsy area for a city, but still ... caught me so off guard I didn't think to pull out my phone and take a pic.

arsprod 07-02-14 09:00 AM

Dry roads for a change, much cooler and supposed to stay that way for awhile

Same here in Sacramento CA. Persistent wind coming out of the southwest for the last two days. California weather is pretty mild but I'll take anything over the wind. Weekly temps around 95. Super low humidity. Drivers were on good behavior this morning.

zacster 07-02-14 04:00 PM

It was steamy this morning and I was drenched by the time I got to the office. It's a good thing we have showers even though I'm not a gym member. Even after a shower I was sweating.

The ride home was even hotter except that I also had headwinds. I took it easy and it still felt like a struggle.

dcb23 07-03-14 04:54 AM

Humid ride in...I may be riding through some rain on the way home tonighjt! Happy July 4 to America's commuters!

tarwheel 07-03-14 05:58 AM

Yesterday was my hottest commute in a while, 97 F actual temperature and 109 heat index. I'm certain that the temperatures were over 100 on the pavement. The worst part about riding on such days is getting caught at long red lights in the afternoon. Fortunately I didn't get caught by any long lights on my ride home but it was a scorcher. My average speed was the slowest since sometime last winter as I was taking it easy to avoid getting a heat stroke. I drove today because of the weather uncertainty due to Hurricane Arthur, which is moving up the East coast. We typically get fairly high sustained winds and bands of thunderstorms, even when the storms just skirt the coast, plus a cold front is supposed to move through during the day. Should be an interesting day for weather around here, but not something I want to ride in.

mgw4jc 07-03-14 06:30 AM

Similar ride home to tarwheel yesterday. Even with 95+ temp, I don't mind it too bad once I get going. I'm sure long stop lights would be the worse though. My commute gets away from congestion pretty quickly and I really don't have to stop after mile 2. The breeze of riding seems to be enough to make it tolerable.

Sticky ride in this morning though. Even with splashing water on my arms and face at the office, I just feel icky. It gets better as the morning goes on and the outside humidity goes down a bit.

scottsmith 07-03-14 06:59 AM

Nice ride this morning. About 16C with light winds, looked like rain but stayed dry. :thumb:

arsprod 07-03-14 07:25 AM

Wet, windy, and chilly - 59F the first week of July! Dog days of summer, where are you?

ill.clyde 07-03-14 07:29 AM

60 degrees, sunny ... little to no wind.

After an off day on Wednesday, and after grabbing my road bike rather than my CX bike, I blistered the ride in ... fastest ride to work yet. I grabbed it because one of my eggbeaters on my CX/commuter is creaking and I need to rebuild it, but I won't lie, I grabbed it also because I knew it would be quicker :)

Looking forward to the ride home, which I might extend if I'm up to it. Should be a little crazy going through downtown, but after that, it'll be a nice ride home.

PatrickGSR94 07-03-14 07:35 AM

Temps in the 60's this morning felt awesome! Normal morning temps are in the 70's with highs in the 90's. Today's high - just 81 degrees. 5 PM will be awesome. :D
