The morning commute rocked. I was able to clear my head and work out a problem I've been having at work. Chargeable work time?

wphamilton 07-03-14 08:20 AM

I've been getting Strava PR's on my commute lately, I don't know why except that the low 90's temperature agrees with me. Or Strava is hosed, I don't really believe the 19.5 average on my commuting segment

I've got PTO next week (yay) so no commutes. I might finally do the Silver Comet trail that I've heard so much about. Happy 4th everyone!

Still hot, humid and sunny with a nice tailwind.

LAst commute to work for two whole weeks, I'm off on vacation tonight WOUHOU!!!!

Ooh, I hope that weather makes it over here. I'm getting tired of showing up at work dripping with sweat.

tarwheel 07-03-14 12:34 PM

I made a good call driving today. The outer bands of Hurricane Arthur are hitting us hard with heavy rain and gusty winds. It would be tough riding home in these conditions, and it could get much worse.

ughhh spoke too soon there. Had a big lunch and drank a beer just before I left the office, combined with a 12 MPH headwind made for one of my slowest ever commutes. What took me 1:09 this morning took 1:25 this afternoon. Utterly exhausted. Felt like I was huffing and puffing the entire time, even on downhills. Where I'm usually doing 25+ I was barely at 14 or 15 MPH. Places where I'm usually in the big ring for awhile had me in the small ring pretty much the whole time.

Felt great outside, but yuck, totally wasn't feeling it today. Unfortunately cooler temps and lower humidity this time of year always means winds out of the north, generally, which means headwinds for the afternoon commute.

The weather was great this morning. But I felt like molasses in January. I have had a week off, I spent yesterday sleeping in bed all day. And I felt slow and tired all day today. But according to Strave my time was only 30 seconds slower and 1 km/h slower. Slow and steady wins the race, almost.

I also could not figure out why my computer was not working for the first half of the ride. Then I realized when I put on my new wheels I forgot to move my magnet onto them. I am just out of it the last few days. I need to move my reflectors over also, but I knew I did not do that and was planning to do one of these days.

So as I expected Vancouver painted new lines on Kent and Cambie for bikes. They took away to ton of parking and marked a lane almost 2 car widths wide. They also marked every driveway on the east side of Cambie between Kent and Marine with green for bikes. I do not see why they did this. It is not that busy there, cars nor bikes. Then on Kent they put a really wide lane for bikes, and not the cars are going to be close. But I do not want to be in the bike lane since it will make drivers upset when I take the car lane to turn left when there is a 1.5 car width lane for the bikes. I will call the city and complain about this later.

Anyway I got to celebrate Canada Day Tuesday as a Canadian for the first time, I received citizenship Monday! But I have to work today, so I can not celebrate my homeland`s day of independence.

So happy Fourth of July to all of my fellow Americans.

The commute in this morning was very nice as I have not commuted by bike in five days, I missed the the peaceful easy feeling of riding.

mgw4jc 07-07-14 06:30 AM

A nice 3 day weekend off of work. I did do a commute of sorts yesterday where I biked to the meeting place from my running group. Bike 6 miles, run 13 miles, bike 6 miles. The weekend saw some much nicer weather too with morning temps in the low 60s and humidity much lower than normal.

Back to the routine and the warmer temps (70F) today though.

50voltphantom 07-07-14 06:40 AM

Warm and fast. A bit of a gamble though as I'm riding without a spare tube today.

I walked out to my garage Sunday morning to find my front tire had mysteriously gone flat. This is the second flat tire I've had this year and both punctures were where the tube contacts the rim. The rim strip needs to be replaced with a wider one but being as it was a Sunday, I covered any noticeable problem areas with electrical tape for now.

Back from a week of vacation, it was very nice.

Warm, humid ride in, it rained about an hour before I left so the roads were damp and the rain accounts for the humidity. Forecast for the rest of the week is dry and sunny!!!

ill.clyde 07-07-14 07:51 AM

Sunny, warm and humid, but a slight headwind kept it from being too warm ... supposed to be in the mid 80s this afternoon.

Legs were tired and somewhat sore from a five hour photo gig I did on Sunday, so I didn't really push hard.

Edit: Forgot to mention, when my MUP ends it ends in a 90 degree right hand turn, down a slight incline to a two lane road with plenty of space on either side of both lanes. Anyway, I make the turn, stay on the right side of the path and in comes an old dude hot on a mountain bike in jeans and a t-shirt. Apparently he wanted to save his momentum to make it up the slight incline and decided to do so by crossing over to my side of the path. Had to swerve into the oncoming lane to avoid him, slightly inconveniencing another commuter following the MTB dude. ~shaking my head~ Never really got close to hitting him, but jeez ...

joeyduck 07-07-14 12:23 PM

Nice ride this morning. My legs felt busted at the start up my hill I had to stand and climb it.

I did a short but steep hike this weekend with a fully overloaded pack and my legs were tired. But they started to feel better, just my big toe with the gash was made more sore by pedaling.

In the end I was able to push hard on the flats with the tail wind. I had a higher overall speed and fairly quick time.

On my rush home Friday for date night I killed my lungs. I was tired and wheezy all night after having a week off. But it was date night and I wanted to be ready. I ended up pulling a tri guy at the end of his ride. He was somewhat impressed (I would like to think) and relieved (he said that) after his long ride to get a pull. I was hurting keeping up that pace after time off.

But I ended up going up the hill and getting home a minute faster and an average speed 1 km/h faster than the commute down the hill that morning.

I love surprise dates, really motivating. We had a nice greek dinner and then saw The Tempest at Bard on the Beach. Great night. Then a weekend hike and camp at some hot springs. Great weekend

^great post

Back to work after a few days off. It was rough getting up at 5:00 am to commute to work. Weather was great and I soon found my groove again. Passed a doe along the road. She never ran. We both just staired at each other. Taking the motorcycle home today. It's been at work for a week. I hardly ever ride it.

wapiti 07-07-14 02:21 PM

I was thinking on my in this morning that I could have worn a sweater. Temp was 13* when I left the house.

Forecast for this afternnon is 33*, and getting warmer all week. Forecast for the Axel Merckx Gran Fondo this weekend is 40* - should be fun.

essiemyra 07-08-14 05:05 AM

The commute in was very nice as I was able to complete two errands this morning and was able to extend my ride in to work by about two miles. The air is very humid this morning with pop up thunder showers in the forecast for this afternoon's ride home. I guess it will be the direct route home today.

dcb23 07-08-14 05:08 AM

Nice summer riding...headwinds seem to hit me both directions to and from work.

tarwheel 07-08-14 06:31 AM

Tough ride this morning, after a tough commute yesterday as well. The weather has really heated up again, with afternoon highs in the 90s. Temperatures have been nice in the morning, although still warmer than I prefer (near 80 at 7 am). What killed me this morning was the stiff headwind all the way to work. Hopefully the wind will continue this afternoon and give me a boost home as the high is supposed to be near 100 F.

jrickards 07-08-14 06:31 AM

Felt good this morning so I pushed a bit harder and made it to work in record (this year) time, 58min. However, it started to spit as I arrived, which surprised me as I thought this week was supposed to be clear and sunny, apparently, the weatherman changed his mind and is forecasting a bit of rain for today and tomorrow.

RidingMatthew 07-08-14 06:39 AM

Drove again today I was sick from June 30 til July 6th and out from july 2 - july 7 for a stomach bug and some dehydration issues. I ended up heading to hospital Tuesday night for fluids.

Still trying to figure out when to get back on the bike especially with the heat this week. I am just not sure I want to jump back in the heat when it is the hottest it has been all year.

how long would you guys/ gals wait before you got back on?

50voltphantom 07-08-14 06:54 AM

Very nice. Cool and one of my fastest commutes ever. It didn't feel as fast as it was. I would've liked to have left a half hour earlier than I did but oh well. Will hopefully bike to work tomorrow as well.

I wouldn't wait much longer ... your fitness level will really take a hit if you wait too long.

Instead of commuting, just do some shorter rides in the morning or evening until you feel like you're ready to resume?

ill.clyde 07-08-14 07:19 AM

Ride in this morning was 68, partly sunny, very humid again. No issues.

Ride home last night, was largely without issue, was very warm and sunny, so the MUP was packed. And yesterday's morons weren't young kids, but two old dudes on bikes and a woman who was walking. The guys were kitted out, so they were clearly well versed in cycling, but I'm not sure if they were both chasing some elderly tail or what, but the woman stopped and these two dopes stopped too, RIGHT ON THE FREAKING PATH! I believe my words were something to the effect of "move your bike off the effing path" or something to that effect.

Then, I dropped my water bottle while heading toward downtown. There was a guy behind me, not pushing me hard, but I was planning to keep him at bay, and then dropped the damn bottle. I can't tell you the last time I missed the bottle cage was. LOL

Lastly, had another moron jump into the bike lane rather than waiting till he could safely make a right turn. Funny thing was, I wasn't worried about him, I was worried about the chick behind him, who seemed to be driving a little skittish. Not only did he cut me off, then he slowed because he was navigating between stopped traffic and parked cars. I was livid but he drove off before I could really say anything.
