We had several cyclists accosted here by young punks on a major road over a series of several months. The cyclists were struck with a bat from the passenger side of the vehicle in broad daylight while in a bike lane. This is not a 'bad' part of town, the attacks occurred adjacent to $500,000-750,000 homes. The attacks only stopped when a cyclist managed to get a license plate number and turned it into the police as well as publishing it on a cycling club web site with a description of the car. This is the only route into a university town for those in the nearby developments and the local cycling advocacy groups fought for a long time to get the bike lanes marked on this road.
How do you prepare for this kind of behavior?

Anyone committing road rage (chasing a cyclist counts) should lose their license FOREVER, and spend a year in jail. I don't mean beeping or passing someone, I mean trying to push someone off the road, cutting in front of another car and slamming on brakes, etc.
Glad the OP managed to get the situation under control. I, for one, don't ride at night for such reasons.
I'm a gun owner, and carry responsibly and legally, but I will just not touch that. This is a cycling forum, not a political/gun rights forum. Just glad the OP is alive, and not a statistic.

It's very unlikely to happen in Germany. Getting a liscence is a several month and several thousand Euro affair. Cutting across the double lines to bust a u-turn as described by the OP would be a 6 or 12 point fine, which would be an instant year loss of liscence.
I think the issue is that the entry in the driving pool in the US is too low and there's no enforcement.
So, no I don't think rode rage will be prominent in Europe.
Interestingly, fines for speeding and quite low in Germany compared to the US.

Germany has had a nasty reputation of being a overly controlled police state in the past, and probably still is.
More police per capita than even the USA which is becoming more like Germany, and not in a good way.

Secondly, car culture is far more entrenched in US society than most of Europe.
The cost of ownership in Germany is much higher, as well as the general cost of living.
Also, the sheer numbers of cars on the road in the US vastly exceeds Germany.

This is like comparing apples to oranges.
The simple fact remains, no amount of laws will ever prevent this from happening anywhere, its a band-aid solution to a core problem that isn't being addressed.

Nothing stops that kind of behavior short of a lead cure. I understand not all cyclists are guns owners and have concealed carry permits, or agree with gun ownership. If you live in a place where you are worried about getting attacked while riding around, maybe its time to get a gun, and concealed carry permit and take gun training classes.

Looking across the sea, and having talked to friends, US is not an ideal place to live. Germany sounds a lot better. Guess it also depends on what you like. Having said that, I personally don't like when someone out of my country criticizes it, while I take local critics with much more respect.
Although, Acidfast's post seems quite reasonable to me. Definitely something to consider. Man has one life - if you have to carry a gun to "be safe", that's like playing Russian roulette every day.
