Rhetorically; what does your appearance to others really matter? You’ll never please everyone no matter what you wear, no matter what you ride; so who really gives a dump?

I wear a helmet when I ride my own bike, but don't when I ride bike share. Go figure. I figure if I'm schlepping my bike, I can schlep the helmet, but on bike share, I can't be bothered. It kind of destroys the convenience and spontaneity of the thing (and we can sidestep the whole debate about helmets). For the record, I don't look anything like the guy in the picture, and I hope don't ride like him either. Some guy on a road bike saw me on a Citi Bike once and said, "Hey, you ride fast." (I never knew that was the Fred emoticon.)

Nobody will ever take you seriously unless you are in the Rapha racoon helmet.

Surely not a hipster. There's not enough irony in all the world for that hat.

Your list isn't complete without one of the more prolific cycling journalists of recent time - the late Sheldon Brown:

Until you've scotch-taped the holes on your helmet (it kept his head warm) and glued a plastic eagle you found on the road to the top, you probably aren't a real Fred.

I'm not sure, but I believe it is directly related to a decrease in spending for mental health treatments.

Now I'm curious about the scotch tape idea, and why he doesn't just wear a hat.
