I went with a hybrid as my first and only bike for about 9 years. I bought a road bike last year. The hybrid is very versatile, I could change the tires out and ride into the winter, I could go with a wide variety of tires, etc. I think it's a very good choice for a first bike and can also be outfitted as a grocery getter and will serve as a foul weather bike in the future even if you get a road bike later.

I'm at 185# and I can say if you do get a road bike, you'll probably want to go with 25 or 28mm tires - I'm rolling 23s and I pinch flat fairly often. If I was rolling another 50+ pounds I'd probably have to move up to wider tires. I'll probably go to 25s myself but I have several 23s that I have to wear out first, so it'll be a few years.
