Broke My Old Record

I had to ride through a rain storm to do it, but today marks my 24th consecutive work day I've commuted by bicycle. My previous record was 23 days set back in November of 2009.

The last few years saw a lot going on in my personal life that necessitated driving (had to take my son to school, run errands at lunch, be somewhere across town by 5:30 PM, etc.) When things started to settle down my habits had changed. I had gotten out of my "ride first" mentality and while I was still commuting by bicycle it had dropped to 2-3 days per week on average.

After my son's baseball season ended at the end of June I decided there were no more excuses and it was time to get serious about commuting again. The last day I drove to work was June 18th.

Now that I've set a new record I'm going to see how long I can extend this streak.

Got to celebrate the small victories when they happen.

that is awesome!~

i only drove to work 7 times last month. I was showing my wife my account on the national bike challenge and she was blown away. I then showed her this month and it was very depressing. THUNDERSTORMS are driving me crazy.

Certainly reason to celebrate. Breaking records shouldn't be relegated to the category of small victory though.

Keep it up, make sure this will be a hard one to beet.

As an update, today marked my 35th consecutive work commute. I notice the further I extend this streak the more motivated I am to keep it going. Friday morning I rode through a rainstorm on the way to work, the type of which nobody would have faulted me for driving instead.

That's pretty darned good!

Yesterday, I took the subway for the first time in about a month. I've been riding so much that I was just plain tired.

Bikes: It's the motor, not the bike, right?

Good work!

Myself, I prefer to think about it differently. I don't keep track of how often I ride instead of drive, I just have the mentality that every day is a ride. Once in a long while I have to drive (usually the twice yearly visit to the dentist before or after work). So I know that for many of us we occasionally have to drive, but I don't really consider it an option.

Today marked my 61st consecutive work commute.

Last week there was a day when I had to meet a service person at my house in the middle of the day, which meant I had to ride to work, back home, back to work and then back home in the evening for a total of 32 miles. As luck would have it, that was also the same day it rained the whole time. But I had my streak going and decided I wasn't going to break it just because I might get wet.

I thought it would be cool if I could keep the streak going to 100 days. The calendar tells me I would hit 100 days on the Friday before Thanksgiving. That's the day my workplace gives us a turkey, so I usually pull my old child-trailer so I can bring the bird home. I figure as long as I've got the trailer I should stop and pick up donuts for the office to celebrate that milestone. So that's what I'm gunning for now.

Your post made me curious how many consecutive days I have ridden. Total came to 78 according to my Strava records. Going to the dentist always messes up the streak. It's about 11 miles to the dentist, but in the opposite direction of work. So if I rode there, it would mean about 34 miles in one day. I'd do it but I'd miss too much work.
