It's easier because I just start and stop the Strava app, and tell it which bike I used. It keeps track of how many miles I have ridden on each bike, miles this year, miles total since I started recording, miles on various parts based on the dates I installed them, etc.

For a numbers and stats junkie like me it's a great tool. I personally could care less about the segments stuff.

The result was bad data.

You can get to the "gear tracker" feature from the "My Home" drop down menu on the current website if you are logged in.
I don't know what MMR has, but Strava has Gear where you can enter different bikes, different shoes for runs, etc. And then for each bike you can list different parts, make and model, weight, install date, date you removed it, etc.

I looked at Strava and it's very close to what I'd really like. The only things it seemed to be lacking are (1) the ability to move a component from one bike to another (or put it on the shelf for a while) and have it maintain its total mileage and (2) the ability to have a component (and a bike for that matter) start with non-zero mileage.

At this point I'm desperately clinging to MMR in the hopes that my data will magically reappear once they fix their bugs. At some point I may very well bite the bullet and switch to Strava.

They say they're going to fix these problems, but it's been a month since I last saw my data.
I've seen you make this complaint in a few threads and I only half understand it. The half I understand is that they lost your data, or are not showing it. The part I don't get is why it should matter whether the software "thinks everything is a shoe" so long as it's a shoe called "bike chain"

Yeah, I don't really care if it calls it a shoe. The problem is that because the interface is designed for shoes the number of pieces of gear I can enter is limited to the number of pairs of shoes I could wear while running -- one. When I gripe about it thinking everything is a shoe it's just a way of complaining about the fact that they made an "upgrade" for Map My Run without giving any thought at all to what it would do to Map My Ride.
