Cheap wall hanger
I don't know if this is common practice, but here's what I use as a wall hanger in my garage. These are a few bucks apiece at Home Depot, and come in a variety of lengths.

I use them in two ways:
1. Put up two of them. Cover each hook with a piece of innertube rubber to protect your bike. Hang your bike by its top tube. For longer term storage to save space in the garage, I remove the front wheel, hang it over one of the brackets, turn the handlebars 90 degrees, and hang up the bike on the hooks. The brackets also provide storage space for extra wheels, tires, etc.
2. Where there isn't space for horizontal hanging, put up one bracket, again with innertube rubber on the hook. Remove the front wheel and hang it over the bracket, then hang the bike by its steering tube.
I've only done this with bikes that are "bike shaped," i.e., no swoopy modern frames. Hanging a modern bike might take some creative placement of the brackets. And of course your wall has to be strong enough for the load.

I store my utility bike in the garage with a pair of ladder hooks screwed into the studs. This is a very old pic, almost everything save for the frame and cables have changed since this pic.
