Lug, it's a good thing you have a beard to catch all that ice. Imagine if it caught onto your face. ;)

Lug 01-23-15 04:18 AM

Thus one of the reasons (besides laziness) for the beard. Built in face protection. Also the bushy sideburns work like the Cat Ears noise reducers.

32F/0C Flat front tire about 3/4 mile from the office. No pop, no sound, just a slow decline. TGIF.

With clear dark skies and the temp at 21f degrees when I left the house, the commute today was nice. Sorry to hear about your flat tire dcb23

Major rain in the forecast today. But not really starting until after 8am. I rode in with minor drops falling. Although I think some of it may have been frozen in some form or another. It was about 38F when I started out.

My wife and I already have a date night planned and she is going to meet me near my work place after work. So I'll skip the ride home which is supposed to be quite wet anyway.

KCBikeCommuter 01-23-15 08:54 AM

It was a little colder this morning than I expected. Around 22F when I left, but thought they were forecasting closer to 30F. Oh well. I thought I might be a little under-dressed, and was a bit cold for the first few miles, but then warmed up and was fine. Except my toes.

Similar to mgw4jc, the wife and I plan to go out this evening. So I'll be riding the bus tonight to ensure I arrive home at a decent hour.

tarwheel 01-23-15 09:10 AM

I commuted in the luxury of my VW Golf today. My legs needed a rest and the forecast is calling for heavy rains starting about noon. On top of all that, I'm meeting my wife and daughter for dinner after work.

My legs were telling me yesterday that it was time for a break. I rode 7 days in a row, totaling more than 270 miles over the past week. My average speeds were dropping every day, even riding my fastest commuter bike yesterday. I don't know how you guys who ride every day do it. My legs get worn out after riding too many days in a row and my performance and enjoyment start to suffer.

arsprod 01-23-15 09:11 AM

Ever have one of those mornings when you just don't want to go outside? Well, hard to get to work without doing it... 27F and little wind - tgif

i gave blood in college for weekend passes to see my girlfriend now my wife of 14 years. I passed out once and the both times I have been exhausted I can not imagine riding after giving blood. I tell my wife that I gave blood to spend time with her. It worked for a while

~50°F this morning. I'm wearing 3 layers. Yes I'm a wimp about cold. As I'm getting my gloves on in the street in front of my house a young lady jogs by wearing shorts and T-shirt. lol That's alright. Still glad I had my layers. Sweated a little but not too much.

i have been riding around a lake here in town in bib tights and wool jersey and a father and daughter run towards me in shorts and t shirt. The skin on their legs is bright red. I am thinking you are crazy but i guess running you are not moving as fast as a bike and have to fit windchill.

Good ride home yesterday. About 60F. We've had pretty sunsets and sunrises all week.
A bit colder this morning at 33F, but quite manageable. High today reaching almost 60 today. My apologies to those in the frozen north. I'm definitely not so hard core, but coworkers are still in awe I ride everyday even in the "winter". Chance of rain tomorrow.

it has been pleasently warm the past couple of days. I have enjoyed the bike and sorta forgot it was January.

....

i usually eat breakfast after i get work. usually oatmeal and clif bar a little later.

I commuted in my Civic today. I have to get home early b/c my wife has somewhere to be tonight.

Sleet was falling when I got to work. I have heard some schools are closing early.

I have ridden 114 miles this week which is amazing considering it is January. I have commuted 3x what i did last year. I am pretty pleased with the riding so far in 2015.
Enjoy your weekend everyone!

It was a dark drencher this AM. The creek overflowed across the MUP again...I dipped a foot, but was able to ratchet the pedals back and forth to avoid dipping a foot again.

The crows!!! Through Gilmore area it's like black clouds of clucking, cawing absolute pre-dawn madness.

The very first time I ever donated blood was 25 years ago, back in my my racing days. I got the warning about no vigorous exercise - then I met up with my riding club to do sprints. My impression was that it felt like I had donated a lung, instead of just a pint of blood. I got smoked by riders I normally beat easily.

It's the opposite of blood doping. Though I always tell myself that the new blood I grow is faster than the old blood I donated - so keep donating!

My ride home last night was slow - a little colder than they said it was going to be @22°F. But I commuted all three work days this week, so that's pretty good for January.

After only 300 miles on a new chain one link did become very rigid this morning. At every revolution the chain jumped the sprockets. It was a long 14 miles to work...
It must be the road salt even though winter hasn't been bad so far in Denmark. I always keep my chains well lubicated in this time of the year, but apparently not enough :(

tarwheel 01-23-15 03:00 PM

Years ago, I gave blood several days before a long ride in the mountains with a lot of climbing, and I suffered terribly. For those familiar with NC, the ride is called the "3 Mountain Madness" and climbs 3 mountains with lots of hilly rollers in between. The total ride is close to 70 miles, with nearly 10,000 feet of climbing. I had ridden the route before, and it was difficult but I finished the entire route. After I had given blood, the ride was much more difficult, and I simply couldn't finish the final climb. I'll never make that mistake again.

That awkward moment when this 45-yo white male realizes the description of his flat also describes his life. No pop, no sound, just a slow decline.

I usually don't post for the return trip but this ride home involved:

A. A rain that turned into ice that went right into my eyes.

B. Another cyclist whom i thought needed help with a tool or two but turns out was rescuing a tiny injured bat on East Capitol Street just near the U.S. Capitol building.

spivonious 01-23-15 06:51 PM

Second ride to the new job today. It's definitely too short. I had a few close passes, but I think it's more that they're not used to seeing a bike on that particular road.

GhostSS 01-23-15 09:00 PM

Pouring rain. A learning driver almost runs me over. The passenger pops out of the car to threaten to fight me. Says it's not her fault because she's learning how to drive. Idiots.

Buffalo Buff 01-23-15 10:12 PM

****** wet today. Was a downpour all day. Layered up in some waterproof clothing, and got to test out my new rear fender on my mountain bike.

Results were good. Fender worked well to keep my ass dry.

But holy ****, I can't believe this Trek 4300 used to be my daily commuter. It feels so slow and heavy, the riding position feels straight derp, and I can't believe I used to prefer MTB style handlebars.

Can't wait to hop back on my Ridley. Today made me appreciate how fast and nimble and responsive it is so much more.

Yeah that's definitely shorts and t shirt weather for me too.

Another cold morning, -22°c and very humid. I got myself new boots and new mitts and it was a good investment: the toes got cold but didn't freeze and the finger were quite hot for the whole ride. I bought heated soles on EBay so when those come in I'll be all set for -40°c.
Tomorrow the forecast is for very strong winds and snow so I foresee a minivan ride...

KCBikeCommuter 01-26-15 08:41 AM

Around 28F this morning with a light headwind... but headed up to the mid-50's today and close to 70 on Wednesday! Glad I'm not messing with the blizzard expected along the east coast today/tomorrow... but for those who are, please take care.

I stopped and took a picture of the 'Scout' statue as I was getting close to work. It was still a little dark out, but the iPhone did a pretty good job.

HOLY RE-FREEZE BATMAN! Very glad I took the studded MTB this morning. I've been using the non-studded fatbike a lot this year. Gratefully, I needed air-up the Pugsley's tires after trail riding with Lisa (the wife) yesterday (I was too lazy/busy to get it done). BTW - the Minnesota River Bottoms were super icy with re-freeze too, very short ride with only one slam. A quote from another rider on the River Bottoms "at least it's only icy on the trail".

arsprod 01-26-15 11:40 AM

18F and snow from yesterday but not enough to make a difference - good luck to you all on the east coast!

Darth Lefty 01-26-15 03:49 PM

I took the car today because I had a medical test scheduled for the afternoon, at a clinic across town. The appointment was just rescheduled. I'm peeved.

I will have huge respect for anybody that posts about their bike commute tomorrow in Boston, Philly or NYC (et al). BUT only with PICTURED (photoshop doesn't count!) ;)

So excited for my PM commute to occasionally require sunglasses. Sunset is getting later and making me smile as I get some vitamin D.

This is what a commute in the tule fog looks like:

yes, just like that. Same color even. Did you see the deer in the middle?

Interesting thing I remember when moving to Florida over 20 years ago... Driving down the turnpike from I-10 towards Orlando and seeing the "Welcome to Sunny Central Florida" as it started raining... it didn't stop for 3 days.
Day or night I like to be seen.

First is the vest that I wear to ride on days off, second is a jacket I bought (cause got tired of being drenched while at work), and last is one of my work shirts (neatly hiding the company logo).

Currently, if my addition is correct I've commuted 131 miles - this mornings 27+ mile commute to work was retched; windy, rainy, and extremely dark - makes me glad I have that jacket, and good lighting on my bicycle.
