House thermometer said 44 after I got rolling I was convinced it was not 44. GPS said 39 and it dropped on the way in until I got almost to work and it was 40 again. My bald head was cold and ears were frozen. I should have put that cap on. I debated it but didn't and my head froze. I felt cold on my toes too. I wondered if I had the cap would I have been warm enough...

Running out the clock for my last commute of the week. I got three days in this week, one with a huge errand detour. It'll be Tuesday at the earliest for the next one. We have in-laws visiting this weekend, so probably no weekend rides either.

ugh I feel like I'm slacking so much. Last year at this time I had several 3-day commute weeks in a row. This year I've barely had any. Mostly just 2-day weeks.
But I'm still slightly up on total miles compared to this time last year, and way up on commuting miles. :thumb: Great ride home today. 80 degrees and mostly a tail wind. Motorists behaved themselves. |
another decent night. my times are getting better. my ears were a bit cold. maybe time to put on these ear covers i have.

Another nice uneventful commute to work, the temp was 49f degrees this am with clear skies.

A little windy and surprisingly chilly considering the T was 55. One of those mornings I should have worn the jacket instead of just shorts and a T. I warmed up eventually, but it was pretty uncomfortable for a large part of the ride.

I did a morning run before my commute and felt like it was pretty cold at the end of the run. For the ride, I wore tights and a jacket but got too warm. I stopped to shed the jacket about 2 or 3 miles from the office. Then I got cold, but was okay with that for the little bit of remaining time. High of 81 this afternoon.

Dark, windy and rainy this morning, but with temps in the lower 60's, I decided to go ahead and brave it. All in all not too bad. I must not have had my pannier closed correctly because a little water got in. Luckily it's Friday 'jeans' day at the office, and the only thing that got wet was a small portion of my jeans. The rest of my clothes stayed dry!

Consecutive Commute #124 :
54 degrees, wind and rain this morning. Left the house in a steady rain, and the skies completely unleashed around mile two. That only lasted for a couple minutes then returned to a steady rain. By the last couple miles the rain reduced to just a drizzle. I arrived at work soaking wet. Then the first thing I did was get in the shower and douse myself with more water. Savor the irony. |
I bike commuted four times yesterday. :) To work, to a Green team tour of a new park downtown, back to work, and back home. My wife said that I could arrive home about the same time as I did yesterday evening. Since was running some errands and would not be home until later. I used it as an opportunity to collect 21 miles on the way home and gave the day a total of 35 miles. :) I am 30 miles away from 4000 miles for the year. I want to get there by the end of October. I should be able to make it. I also want to get more than 385 miles (what I did last October) It will be tight to make that goal though.
YEsterday my ride in I was cold but today I wore my hat and I felt good on the ride in this morning. Next week they are calling for rain and it will be tougher to commute with rain, darkness, and possibly cold compared to this weeks chilly but dry. |

The temp was a cool 34f degrees when I left the house this am. Everyday seems like an adventure in "what to wear for the ride". Well today I started out with one pair of gloves and had to stop to add the second layer as my hands were cold. Other than that it was a very nice uneventful ride to work.

45F / 7 C, over all a nice ride in to work in the dark. I saw another commuter coming out of my neighborhood who heads in to DC most of the way I do.
Oh...and a clueless morning driver almost took me out about a half mile from my house. |
Last Monday was about 35F, but today it is 60F - back to shorts and short sleeve shirt. The overcast skies made for a darker ride in. I left a little later than I like to, but a favorable wind helped me get to work on time. I averaged 16.8mph for a much faster time than usual.

Quick pace this morning due to a late departure. Almost missed the train, but the operator was kind enough to give me a 10 second reprieve. It's getting cold and I can feel it in my lungs (cold air can trigger asthma for me). Good ride, though, and made the best time I think I ever had on work side due to hitting both lights just right.

38F/3C as I left this morning. I was actually overdressed and stopped after a couple of miles to remove one layer. Otherwise a really nice commute.

Mild commute with temps in the upper 50s this morning, compared to the low 30s last week. I actually prefer the colder temps because I don't sweat as mcuh, but it's hard to complain about the weather we've been having lately. All that is supposed to change tomorrow, with a couple days of rain forecasted. Commuted on my Soma Saga touring bike this morning for the first time in a while and enjoyed the cushy ride. It's slower than my other options so I don't use it much for commuting, but it was all ready to go after riding 61 miles on it over the weekend.

Steady rain, no flooding but heavy enough that I didn't see another cyclist until I got to work - a coworker from another building was tying up when I rolled up. He's been pretty consistent and doesn't seem to mind the rain, the only one besides me that I've seen do that in this area.
I was actually 5 minutes late to my desk which is unusual for me. It wasn't the rain so much as the carpet of leaves over the 6 miles of path, which made me nervous and slow around the turns. For some reason the thought of mixing with traffic in the first heavy rain in a few weeks was even less appealing so I took the slow lonely route. |
Computer this morning said 39F, radio said 44F so I'll call it 41F. I think all the trees along the mup colluded to drop their leaves this weekend. Rain predicted for tonight and the next two days so wet leaves - scarier for me than snow and ice. I wonder if studded tires work on wet leaves?!? Hmmm...

The bike path is now officially closed (from mid-oct to mid-april every year) so there's no one to sweep all the dead leaves. It's quite dangerous and slippery so for the last two commute I tried to go on the road. I was afraid at first because my new commute is on a provincial road that is a lot more busy than my previous commute. But it went really well! There's a lot more traffic but the shoulder is at least 3 feet large and up to 5 feet on the most dangerous zones.
Cool and nice weather so far this fall and the winds are not too bad. |
It's starting to get to the point in eastern Iowa where even I will admit that it's getting a little chilly. Wore the AmFib tights for the first time this morning at ~47°F, but just a regular jersey and half-finger gloves to avoid overheating.

At our house it was 44 but the bank down the street said 38 and the other bank down the hill said 42.. all I know is I could of cut glass with 2 of my body parts! It's always cold on the first half which is mostly downhill but was perfect on the way up. Got my rain jacket ready for tomorrow but not sure on the rain + cold equation. Repacked the front and back bearings with green grease felt a slight rumble in the back, only been about 1k miles pretty sure it was just to tight, so at least that's squared away.

Darn! I guess I cooked the rear tire when I locked up the brakes a few days ago. There is a signal along my route that is always green, because it's for the Fire Station. I haven't had to stop at it in the 1.5 years I've been commuting. However, when I looked up, it was red and I slammed on the brakes out of instinct. There were no sirens yet, but the trucks did finally come out about 30-seconds later. Didn't notice the tire damage until today at the office. Made it home okay, but looks like I need a new one. :(
