Scary end of my commute today. My stem loosened up and started turning freely - without the forks moving along as they normally do - just as I was pulling into the parking garage at work.
I'll be walking to the nearest store that sells allen wrenches today at lunch to tighten it up before the ride home. I'm really glad this didn't happen in traffic. That might have been bad, to say the least! |
Thanks. Me too! I hope there's not some bigger problem here.
Edited to add: I walked over to Performance Bike at lunch today and bought one of those three-way allen wrenches. The stem is now nice and tight. I think I'll keep the wrench in my rack bag and check the stem frequently, at least for a while. Turning the handlebars and having the bike continue on straight was not a pleasant experience. |
I had a doctor's appointment only a few blocks away, so I rode Citi Bike for about four blocks. That was all. I'm picking up a big tool chest this evening, so I drove the SUV to work today. :(

35F at the house but GPS said 28.4F at some points during the ride. I will be interested in seeing the chart from GPS this evening. I wore my wool jersey, bib tights, gloes and a vest. Ialso wore my summer helmet w/ balaclava. I was afraid I was going to be too cold. It was not too bad. My glasses fogged up. 85% covered. I had to take them off to see. I think that the double lenses are the reason it is fogging up. I am tempted to drill some small holes at the top of the front lense. I would like to try ordering a second pair and see if that works. I do have some HSA money so I might just buy some new lenses for my Oakleys. It is too dark for sunglasses bike commuting now.
I hope that it will be a little warmer the rest of the week. goingto put new chain rings, chain and cassette on the bike wednesday evening. |
The commute in this am was very nice but chilly, the temp was 25f degrees when I left the house. I took the direct route this am due to the temp.
|
Wet!! And the wind was right in my face which I despise. I can handle any precip but that wind is horrible. And I forgot a dry pair of underwear.. oops.
|
The ride home in the evening seems to get darker earlier each week.
Much warmer this morning and not too bad at 44F. I wore shorts. A little chilly on the knees but overall felt fine. Those storms that are going through the mid-west are heading to us tonight, so tomorrow could be wet. But also a warmer morning. |
-3C, clear and sunny but a bit of a headwind for a good part of the ride. I thought I was underdressed but I was fine although my fingers were a bit cold (typical of me).
|
Ride in yesterday was pretty wet, but the ride home was awesome. Roads were still a little wet, but had a nice tailwind and 65F temps!
|
Zero stops on the ride in this morning, a record. I think that I didn't even touch a toe down. Amazing.
It was a nice ride in, too. A cool-ish 42 F that felt fine. |
No bike ride yet this week. Took yesterday off - have contractors coming to lay down some bamboo flooring in my house. They came for an estimate Sunday night and said they could start as soon as we moved all the furniture, so I spent yesterday doing that and a few other projects.
This morning I loaded up the car with a bunch of stuff bound for Goodwill. Most of it is glassware, so I didn't want to even try doing it on a bike. |
PSA: charge your headlights.
I agree with you mgw4jc darker and darker. especially when you get 20 minutes into your ride and the light is blinking low battery. luckily I pushed hard 15.5mph avg pace. Even with a few extra miles because cops were blocking this one street off. but at least I made it home and all was good. I started with shorts but was glad i slipped my knee warmers in the bag that morning. I slipped them on about halfway through and it made a huge difference to the comfort of the rest of the ride.

But also a warmer morning. my wife was outside when i was coming home and she said she saw my light and it was till bright and caught her eye so that is encouraging and good to know because i felt like it was getting weaker and weaker on the ride home. This morning it was a little warmer than yesterday around 40F and dropped to 37 or so on the ride. I had enough time to ride a little extra. 15 miles this morning.. Much better ride today. No glasses fogging or at least I was able to regulate it better and fogging went away and stayed away. :thumb: Tomorrow evening (after an bike advocacy meeting) I am putting new parts on the bike, with the squeaking and such I am ready for new drive parts... so I am driving tomorrow :( but i should have some a new feeling bike for Thursdays ride. I hope |
Nothing of much note today except that these new Head jogging gloves from Costco are pretty useless.

Massive headwinds this morning made for my slowest commute ever, took 1h30m total time to go 15.5 miles. Winds out of the SSE at 19-20 MPH, but then those winds will be up near 25 MPH this afternoon heading home, which will be a "breeze" *rimshot* :P I'm just hoping I can beat the rain.
|
Stormy to say the least. Windgusts up to 60 mile an hour and rain, o god the rain. I was soaked. There was no piece of clothing on my body that wasnt completely soaked. But on the positive side: I did not waste my time in the traffic jams.

First cold ride to work this season, 23 degrees no wind though so that was good. Legs would not work today though one of my slowest commutes in a while.
Crisp clean air noticed frost on the windows on my wife's car as I left. Always a little more cautious when I see that as people around here tend to clear a small spot on their windows when they leave for work before sunrise then they drive leaving the defroster to clear the window off. |
Today was my first commute with new tires (Kenda Kwick Trax instead of default MTB tires) and new shifters (index shifters instead of grip). While I noticed the new tires rolled easier, according to my App I didn't actually ride any faster. I was a bit worried the new tires wouldn't be fit for the hardest parts of my commute (dirt trail), but they handled like a champ.
New shifters also feel good. It's was a bit strange first because I only had bikes with grip shifters (until now) but they're OK. Partly cloudy day, I think around 15ºC (60ºF) and slightly windy so only a light jacket was needed. Drivers were a bit jerkier than usual, now that summer is approaching and sun rises before 7am I see a lot more traffic on my early rides to work. |
Beautiful sunrise this morning. I would have stopped for a picture but my timing to get to a good spot didn't work out. We have some rain on the way. It's supposed to hold off until tonight. If I'm lucky it will move on through before I have to ride in the morning.
|
Comfortably mild, 6C and overcast. Rain forecast for later today, starting between 4 and 5pm which means that if the forecast is correct, I'll be riding home in the beginning of it but the temperature will have risen to 11C so that's not so bad for a 25min ride home.
The ride in this morning allowed me to beat my annual personal best by 0.9km, currently sitting at 4,229.4km. It really should have happened much sooner this year but I wimped out of too many commuting rides in. However, I'm glad that November has been so mild so that I'm able to beat my PB. |
Warmer and more humid this morning with temps in the low to mid-50s. A cold front is supposed to move through NC later today, and hopefully the rain will hold off until this evening and not soak me on the ride home. My average speeds have really dropped off since the time change. Amazing how much slower my speeds are while riding in the dark, mainly from being more cautious.
Regarding batteries running low, that issue has been the biggest improvement I've seen since I switched to a dynamo light system for my primary commuter bike. I still use a battery-powered helmet light, but my main headlight is dynamo powered now. I have very quickly adapted to just hopping on my bike and riding without worrying about batteries. I charge my helmet light on my computer, plugging it in first thing when I get to work in the morning. |
Consecutive commute #142 :
Pouring rain this morning. 41 degrees. Light wind. Very dark. I got soaking wet, which given the temps made me extremely cold by the time I got to work. Not just wet from the deluge coming down, but lots of spray coming at me sideways from the cars driving through the deep puddles. Wrung at least a 1/4 cup of water out of each sock. Trying to figure out how to dry out my gear in time for the ride home tonight. It was one of those days where if I didn't have my consecutive streak going it probably would have been a good decision to drive. At least I had the presence of mind to wrap my work clothes in a plastic bag so they were dry when I arrived. |
wash - rinse - repeat... rain and headwinds day two. I'm counting on the promised 40mph tailwinds for the ride home
|
Roads were wet again this morning, but at least it stopped raining. Around 48F/9C when I left the house, so the temperature was fine, but the headwinds really sucked. One of my slowest rides to work in quite some time. Should, hopefully, have a good tailwind this evening.
|
I rode in today. First time in a long time. I had fun. The way I position my facial muscles in order to breathe, I look like I'm smiling. I got lots of smiles back this morning. Winds were moderately light. I wore cycling clothing, as this is my new preference. The 13 mile distance means street clothing gets uncomfortable after a while.
I solved my brake shudder problem last night. Maybe the dirt on the brake pads were contributing, but I think mostly it's because they weren't toed in. I realized I had put the spherical washers together wrong, and now I have it figured out. But boy, compared with my new Lemond, this old Bianchi Volpe sure is slow and heavy. |
