-5F with a headwind, argh, but bright and sunny
|
30F this morning... WOW! That's 43 degrees warmer than yesterday morning! I will enjoy it for the one day we get here in Minneapolis before getting back down to morning temps around 0F for the rest of the week
This warm morning gave me a little reminder about how much better my legs feel and work when it's not sub-zero; felt like I was flying to work this morning.... well 'flying' is a relative term, the Pugsley averaged 13.7 mph. |
My morning run at 5am was on wet, but safe streets under falling snow. I figured the bike ride in would be fine. About 45 minutes later it had turned into a winter wonderland and still coming down. I woke up the wife to take me to work as she needs our one car during the day.
Just after exiting our neighborhood there is a big uphill. I can see that hill before turning out and saw 2 cars off the side of the road trying to go up and one that went off on trying to go down. My wife looked at Google traffic and saw nothing but red lines on all the main roads with accident icons everywhere. I decided to go back home and just go in late. They did open on time though because roads aren't near as bad just 10 miles south of me. It got a bit better but I'm glad I didn't ride because the roads had several icy sections and/or slushy shoulders. Oh well, another day missed. Hopefully tomorrow will be rideable, but there is another storm coming Wednesday night so Thursday could be another day like today. |
I had to scrape the two inches of ice off of my car windshield this morning. -1F is too cold to ride for me. :(
|
Oh, and my ride home yesterday was probably my slowest ever due to cross and headwinds the whole way home. Something like 5 or 6 minutes slower than normal for my 12 mile ride. I'd get into a rhythm and a gust would blast me back again. But it was warm enough that I wore shorts and blinded drivers with my pale legs.

It was cooler this morning than it's been lately, so I dressed warmer than usual, and packed a vest just in case I over-heated. About 5 miles in, and before the first substantial climb on my ride , I decided to stop and swap my jacket for my vest which made for a much more enjoyable ride. On Sunday, we had some much needed rain, so I spent the day in the garage watching the 500 on my iPad while I tore down my commuter and gave her the full spa treatmnt. I didn't take any glamour shots of my beast all shiny this morning, but it sure was nice to look down and see my bike looking like new, and running as smooth as silk. Nothing beats a silent, clean drivetrain. When I got to work, I learned that my boss is off until Thursday; looks like I may scoot out a little early, and take the long way home. :)

Pretty nice ride in Beantown this morning, 3F and low winds. The bikeway was all rough ice, but the studded wheels ate it up. Streets a bit narrow though - it pains me to have to wait with the cars in traffic.
|
Stars out and 30 degrees F. this morning, nice ride. It's been dry enough that an on-coming car had me sucking some dust on my gravel portion. I still like that better than rain, though I'm trying to get rid of my rain phobia. I might try riding again on Thursday.

a bit chilly and the headwind at the end of the ride sorta sucked

-8f/-22c this morning. The aftn was sunny and 21f/-6c.
|
Got a permanent wryly smile on my face by looking at the endless line of gridlocked cars along my commute this morning.
Was on the edge waving at a driver with a road bike in tow bar rack when I passed him. I'm a bad person :) Btw: here in Denmark the temp is pretty stable at about 36ºF. Despite that the roads are covered in road salt :( |
22F / -6 C here in DC. Another uneventful ride in, quiet mornings these days.
|
I had a bit of a scramble before leaving this morning. I didn't ride yesterday due to some weather, so my ski mittens I normally use were confiscated by my children playing in the snow. Therefore they were not where I expected them to be when I was ready to leave. I had to wake my son who said they were in the washing machine, having been washed, but not dried. I checked them out and deemed them to be usable anyway. My hands stayed warm enough coming in.
Nice ride in with a tolerable 28F. A winter storm is tracking our way and due to get here around 4 or 5pm. If it gets bad quick enough my wife will have to rescue me, but hopefully I can ride. |
It was about 15F when I left the house. It was cold. The roads are full of gravel bits from the snow plows. I'm ready for Spring.

We ended up with about 2" of snow here yesterday, with another storm coming tonight and forecasts calling for 4-10" of additional snow. Our roads had just cleared up enough to ride on Sunday from the sleet storm we had the previous Monday. So, I've managed one outdoor ride since Feb. 15.
The National Weather Service and local TV forecasters totally missed the snow we got here yesterday, so the DOT did not put down any salt or brine on the roads ahead of time. The high temperature was in the mid-20s. As a result, many of our roads were still covered with snow and ice this morning. They didn't pick up trash or recycling at all last week due to the ice on roads, and if they miss again this week it's going to really start piling up. I don't know how they handle this sort of stuff after storms up north, but there must be a better way. |
awesome. 7decC/45degF and cloudy. I say awesome because i had the lego movie song by tegan and sara in my head.
|
My commute was awesomely hard. I had a stretch of almost two miles of ice, very roughly faceted ice, from tire tracks and footprints. I had to walk a lot of it, and even that was difficult. I ought to complain to the parks department, because they don't seem to give a sh*t about the northern portion of the Hudson River Greenway.

24 degrees this morning and halfway through i took off the long underwear shirt. I had to zip up some of the vents but I felt good. Glad I rode.
supposed to snow tonight. 5-10" then ice YIKES  |
21f/-6c this morning. Big change over yesterdays -8f/-22c. The aftn was great. Sunshine and 31f/0c. Felt good to be in the 30's.

By the time my business travel finishes toward the end of next week, it will be 4-weeks since my last commute! I've been home on the weekends, so I have been able to get a few rides in, but this has been a LONG stretch of non-commuting. :(
|
I am missing my commute. It has been 34 days since my last commute, but I didn't finish it so maybe 35 days.
Still waiting on one surgery. |

23.9 miles cool enough to need a jacket to being warm enough wish my work shirt breathed better... after work was 6 miles nice weather - had a ride partner. Never realized just how much speed you gain with a partner.
