Warmest ride to work in several weeks: 40F.
Foggiest ride ever with visibility only about 100 yards at the beginning, maybe 1/4 mile at the end. All cars passed me safely, so I'm thinking my visibility must have been sufficient, but their taillights would disappear quickly into the soupiness.

No actual rain, but my tights, jacket and gloves were all quite damp by the time I got in. Unless we get torrential downpours, I hope to ride all week compared to just 3 times last week.

We have a roller coaster of highs forecast this week.

First bike commute in two weeks due to a series of 4 winter storms here. We've still got snow covering yards and snow-plow piles on the sides of the street 5 days after our biggest snowstorm last Wednesday night. Temperatures have been mostly below freezing since then, so very little melting has occurred. I tried to ride on one of the greenways on Saturday and had to turn back after 2 miles because it was just too icy. The snow we got last week was very wet, and turned icy in the freezing temperatures, so it's not like riding through slush. Yesterday we had heavy freezing rain, which would have caused havoc if it had been a work day. There were a lot of wrecks early in the morning even though very few people were out driving. Hopefully the weather will get back closer to normal this week, but it's looking kind of sketchy with more "wintry mix" expected on Thursday.

No ride in this morning - still a lot of slush and ice on the roads from yesterday's "wintry mix".

I did get to ride on Saturday. I'm taking the League's Traffic Skills 101 course as a prerequisite to become a certified instructor. Had a nice 5 mile ride into Lancaster. Riding on city streets is so much easier than riding in the suburbs. I had no issues keeping up with traffic, and even had an urge to filter. After the class, I took mostly the same route home. It was on the ride home that I realized why the ride in had been so nice. A 10mph tailwind which was now a headwind on the all uphill route home. I was beat when I got home. I got honked at for the first time in a while. Some guy didn't like me riding in the center of the right lane on a two-lane one-way street. He had to wait all of 5 seconds before he could pass me.

On my way home last Friday. Hudson river path, New York City.

@1nterceptor Like that picture!

I'm glad to be done with February - 9 rides at or below 0F. March started just slightly nicer, 6F this morning and nothing but blue skies!

Tomorrow will be interesting, forecast for 4 inches of snow, plan to take the Pugsley and the no-roads route.

Finally back at it. A fairly quick ride in, feeling good.

Happy Monday everyone!

i used that phrase talking to a fellow bike commuter this morning. I think that best describes it roller coaster weather.
i rode under some trees and they dripped on me. It was so foggy and 37F for me. I felt like cars saw me pretty well. blinky front and headlight and on rear blinky coat, solid seatpost light, and blinky pannier.

It was a great ride other than my glasses fogging up. I was tempted to stop and take them off but they are prescription and did not really want the water hitting my face. cant ride tuesday but hoping to ride wednesday. I will probably not ride thurs (wintry mix) and friday leaving work early to go camping with my daughter.

just above freezing this am, and sunny!!

Over the weekend i installed a lot of new parts: wheels (vuelta corsa lite), chainrings, cassette, chain, rear brake pads, front tire, RD pulley wheels.
I still need to do the final RD barrel adjustment, but it was good enough for the commute. It's like a whole new bike!! :) :)

New rear hub is very quiet when coasting--very stealth...(I'll have to call out 'on you left' a bit more than i'm used to.)

scoatw 03-02-15 03:13 PM

21f/-6c this morning. Getting out of the neighborhood was icy frozen hardpack with some loose stuff thrown in. Main roads were good. The aftn was bright sunshine and 29f/-1c that felt warmer than that. But it melted most of the hardpack in my neighborhood.
Tom'rw they are calling for freezing rain turning into rain with a high in the 40's. Then back to the teens with a chance of more snow on Thursday. I just can't seem to get back on the road tires just yet.

This morning it was so foggy that I could only see what is directly in the beam of my headlight. - After work - hot and sunny (80* F)...

dcb23 03-03-15 06:12 AM

Just abover freezing. I'm hearing more snow mid day today and perhaps tomorrow. But I have to say, I can taste spring in the air. A few birds singing in the dark and the sun is creeping up...until we set clocks of course.

mgw4jc 03-03-15 07:17 AM

42F and cloudy this morning. I left about 10 minutes earlier than normal and added a couple of miles on a MUP and through a neighborhood. 15 miles total, about 2.5 higher than normal.

The forecast showed chances of showers, but not until about 10am. They came earlier. In the first part of my ride, a few drops hit me here and there and then a light shower dampened me near the end. It didn't really bother me though I'm a little chilled now. Hmm, time for some hot chocolate perhaps.

30 degrees but dry and clear. The moon had just gone down when I took off, which was too bad as I like riding in moonlight. But it will be up for my ride home tonight. I ran 5 miles yesterday faster than usual and I felt it in my legs this morning, but I had a nice ride. There was a lot of traffic this morning. I think about 5 cars passed me in 9 miles.

Daniel4 03-03-15 12:18 PM

Uneventful until I was approaching the last traffic light to turn left. I was on a side street about to enter a busy main road. I can see the count down was around 15s and already knew I wasn’t going to make it. But the car behind me thought he could so he speeded past me and lost control. The road that we were on makes a slight right hook before stopping at the lights. The motorist skidded out of the lane and going further to the left spinning almost 90degrees clockwise just as someone was making a right turn into my street. Both cars stopped just in time. The light was still green so the offending car just continued on while I made it to the red light.

Went to the basement for my bike this morning. The rear had a flat :notamused:
On the bright side it's better to repair a flat at home than on the road.

spivonious 03-03-15 01:29 PM

Forecast is for snow and ice this evening, so I drove in.

It's currently raining, so I totally could have ridden.

Hypno Toad 03-03-15 02:05 PM

Snow came later than expected, I thought we'd have 2 inches on the ground when I left, but it didn't start snowing until I rode out. I'd rather ride on 2 inches of snow, than the first accumulation (slippery). But is was a good fun ride, Pugsley is sure-footed. Snow accumulation is up to ~3 inches and the sun is out now. The big challenge will be the wind on the ride home; 25 mph with 35 mph gusts. It'll be a cross-wind and at times a head wind. Slow ridin'!

Torker 03-03-15 02:18 PM

Ride in this morning was okay, 30 degrees and freezing drizzle. Ride home not looking so good, currently 34 degrees and pouring rain.

scoatw 03-03-15 03:55 PM

24f/-4c this morning. The aftn ride was a cold, rainy ride home. 33f/1c. The glacier gloves kept my hands warm and dry. They fit tight but I'm getting used to them. This was only the second time I used them and they did good. The rest of my rain gear held up good. J&G jacket. O2 rainpants, and showers pass touring shoes covers. My ride is 45mins one way and I was as snug as a bug.

mgw4jc 03-04-15 07:25 AM

I pushed the pace off and on during my ride home last night, occasionally concentrating on pulling up on the pedals too. This morning my glutes are sore.

I wore shorts for the ride in for the first time this year (I think). Almost 50F this morning. Wet roads from some overnight rain, but no actual rain on me. Instead, I enjoyed some fairly constant head winds for my ride in. Usually I only get that on the way home.

High today could be 75 degrees! Wow.

tarwheel 03-04-15 07:29 AM

Strange commute today due to equally strange weather. We had cold rainy weather yesterday with temps in the 30s, but it warmed up overnight into the 40s with a stiff SW wind. The roads were still soaking wet this morning and the forecast was calling for a dense fog warning. It wasn't foggy at my house when I left for work, but I rode through intermittent patches of thick fog and had to stop to clear off my glasses a couple of times. This was weird because we don't normally get fog when it's windy, and there was a stiff headwind all the way to work. The high is supposed to reach the 70s this afternoon, which will be the warmest weather we've had in weeks. Temps are supposed to crash tomorrow with another strong cold front coming through, but hopefully the roads will dry enough so there's no black ice on Friday morning.

Hypno Toad 03-04-15 08:45 AM

I'm so happy to be done with all that February sub-zero weather, so we can get started with the March sub-zero weather! D'OH!

-3F this morning and yesterdays warm snow left many icy patches to enjoy. It was a real coin-flip this morning, studded tires on the Marin or fat tires on the Surly... unplowed trails versus icy patches. The fatbike won and was sure-footed & fun as always.

The temperature-roller-coaster seems to be effecting most of the US: Yesterday was near 30F; today the high will be around 10F; and by Friday temps should be up to 35F ... and if you can believe the extended forecast, 50F next Wednesday. (fingers crossed)

RidingMatthew 03-04-15 02:56 PM

45 degrees and massively foggy this morning. Really windy and I hope that the commute home is pleasurable. Temps will drop tonight and they said we may get 1-3" of snow. (rain to sleet to snow) I guess i will drive tomorrow.
I am working a half day friday and then going hammock camping with my daughter for the weekend. It could be pretty cold at night and I hope we get our gear set up before darkness.

scoatw 03-04-15 04:33 PM

33f/1c this morning. It rained all night. I had to ride in a rain/snow mix that made for a slushy ride in to work. The aftn was mild and 34f/1c. We have snow with arctic air behind that, moving in overnite.

Last night the weatherman said, not this weekend but next weekend we'd have temps in the 60''s.
