i overdressed this morning. i thought it would be 37-45 this AM like the past few mornings but it wasn't.

it is a balmy 55 in NYC and i needed 1 thin long sleeve layer for top and bottom. i arrived rather soaked. that's fine.

there were no cars (or anyone for that matter) on the road this morning so i made it to work in record time, 19 min. well, actually my record is 17 from earlier this year but it's been awhile since i was able to ride that quickly, usually 21-23 is the norm. that was amazing. i saw one rider riding for fun and the rest of us were heading into work. it's really perfect riding weather. whoo hee! and it will be 72 on Thu (Christmas day!)

i can't even believe it.

Today was a bit warmer than it should be this time of year... 55F, and drizzly. Which is very pleasant to ride in. It has been about 28F and windy, so I'll take the change in temp.

The commute was really good until I got a quarter of the way to work and my RD cable pulled out of the STI... Or it snapped, I'm not sure which. That of course means that I was stuck in my 11t cog in the back... Riding my 36/11 up the hills on my way to work was rather difficult, but a good challenge. Made me a bit more sweaty.

I put my DIY studded tires on my winter bike this weekend and rode in this morning. I knew that my tires might be a little soft because I had inflated them to the lowest recommended pressure in house-warm temps before I put the bike outside but when I arrived at work, the front tire was softer than it should be, I think I have a slow leak. Now I have to get my son to pick me up instead of riding home. I was so looking forward to getting back into riding as I haven't biked for close to 2 weeks (either because of rain or icy paths without the studded tires on). I'll see if I can fix it quickly enough tonight as tomorrow is my last work day this week; on the 24th, my wife and I are driving from Sudbury to Terrace Bay to stay with our youngest during his first year away from us (he doesn't get holidays yet and in fact, may have to work the holiday weekend).

Cold, but not too bad this morning. Just below freezing as I left the house, but headed up to around 57F this afternoon! Winds should be fairly strong this afternoon as well, but I think they will be a tail/cross wind.

Today is my last commute of 2015.

Well I was going to ride today, the utility bike in the pic above. I had it all ready to go, since I'm having problems with my road bike's rear tire losing air very quickly for some strange reason. But then this morning it was super thick fog, still wet from yesterday's rain, and the utility bike doesn't have fenders yet. I (and the bike) would have been a soggy mess, so I just drove. Storms forecast tomorrow. Oh well, hope to get some rides in over the holidays.

Pull the cable until you're in a tolerable gear and put an overhand knot in it. Or tie it to the handle bars and make a rudimentary grip shift.

Both options I never thought of. If I was actually proficient at tying knots, I would give this a try. I think I'm just going to adjust the limit screws and see if I can make it tolerable. Otherwise I will give this an attempt. Thanks!

Am over hand is just what you start tying your shoes with. If you do it close to a cable guide on your top of down tube it should pull taut from the resistance of the derailleur spring. So tie it a cog higher than wanted, it will have a tendency to pull down to lower cogs.

Did a 11.8 mile commute to make my 2000 miles for the year! Thought I would have to ride till Jan 1 to hit that goal, a mile here and there really adds up! So far switched everything over to the Trek twice this week just to switch it back. Tuesday was the only day with dry roads so far, won't even try it with no fenders. A bit of head wind but overall not bad this week. I did fry this morning with my rain jacket on! Only taking the actually holiday off no others this year so should hit 2100 miles at least, save all my vacation for summer trips!

Phil_gretz 12-23-15 07:13 AM

Thick fog this morning made today a more treacherous ride. I could not see the roadway in front of myself, despite my lights. Unseasonably warm, I've been unable to wear the right clothes to prevent sweating. I was close this morning. Maybe I should wear a tri swim suit and tank top...

I was pleasantly surprised this morning, the lightest possible rain rather than what we've had forecast. Construction on the Greenway is complete, a raised section over some drainage from off the hill. It was one of those mornings where due to the weather and holidays I had it to myself for miles at a time. We still think thunderstorms are approaching so I'll have to deal with that on my way home.

After tomorrow I'm done for the year with 211 days of bike commutes, which means as usual I neglected to use all of my PTO. But that's better than not working at all so you won't catch me complaining!

spivonious 12-23-15 10:03 AM

Foggy this morning. I had a lady who insisted on trying to pass me going down a twisty hill. Since I hit 30-35mph on that downhill, she stayed next to me the whole time. MGIF!

PatrickGSR94 12-23-15 10:38 AM

Yep, no commutes for me this week. I'm off all next week which means last Thursday was the last commute of the year for me (hopefully not the last ride of the year, I haven't reached last year's total miles of just over 3,600 yet). Strong storms and tornadoes possible today. I'm leaving the office around lunch here in just a few.

Yeah I'm watching the weather your way, my dad is heading to Nashville to visit my brother. It's a crappy time of year for this weather you're expected to get.

esmith2039 12-24-15 07:15 AM

Little wind this morning and not a bad temp hope it's the same on the way home. The wind about has me beat and wanting to drive. Actually having to stop going up hills and resting.. could be from giving blood on Monday.

greg3rd48 12-24-15 09:36 AM

My last day riding was on Monday. It was a lovely, cool morning. By the evening I felt awful and in the morning the Dr. confirmed that bronchitis is paying me a visit. I hope to commute tomorrow by bike on Christmas as long as my lungs are working better.

schwinn1959 12-25-15 01:54 PM

well I did a 20 mile ride and busted my past record of 20 miles a week. I have done 32 miles in 2 days and love it and over 117 total as of today. I will try to do 200 miles before end of year. Looking for tomorrow to see if I have the time to be able to ride and see how close I get

heywood 12-25-15 07:45 PM

Working over the holidays so i get to ride in and back on pretty much empty roads..same thing next week for New Years too.. weather has been great and took the trails back in the morning (i'm on nights). My holidays will be when everyone else is heading back to work :) The only down side is you have to be extra careful for inattentive drivers, stressed & worried over christmas and not expecting any bike commuter traffic.

RidingMatthew 12-26-15 11:28 AM

Last day riding was Wednesday drove Thursday and Friday. Traveling I have not ridden to work for me this week (I have been OFF, YAY) but it has also been rainy all week as well. I decided to do some running this week while traveling instead of bringing the bike and subjecting it to hundreds of miles on the back of the van in the rain. So far this week 12 miles running and I hope run some more today!

I hope to commute some next week but the rain is making me debate it more than usual. :twitchy:

Back home from school for break, and decided to do my commute from last summer as an intern. The warm humid weather combined with that route really brought back a lot of good memories from the summer. I'll be doing this commute again next summer for the same internship! Of course, I got a flat on my way back home.

In fact, I'll never forget my first commute ever, where I got a flat from a fishing hook on my ride into work. It was not a good feeling, sweating balls and changing a tube in the middle of a state park when I'd never even successfully completed a commute before. I'll also never forget how even though I was in the middle of a state park at 7:00 am, two or three other bike commuters stopped and made sure I had all of the supplies I needed.

esmith2039 12-28-15 05:56 AM

Slush and ice on the roads this morning and my first ride with studded tires. Wasn't easy by any means but those tires cut right through it. The last little section is a steep hill and was spinning the tire the last 1/4 way up! Going to be worse on the way home. Against the wind and supposed to keep dumping. Oh well I'll take more breaks if I have to.. one thing is for certain I won't let mother nature win.

mgw4jc 12-28-15 09:32 AM

I was off work all last week, but back at it this week. Humid and 66F this morning with some misting or drizzling happening. Wore shorts and short sleeve top.

I got a bike mount for my phone for Christmas. I started out with it this morning, but then stopped and put it into my trunk as it was drizzling enough that I figured it wasn't good for the phone. I don't suppose I really need the phone accessible, but I'll give it a try, perhaps turn on some tunes.

spivonious 12-28-15 11:49 AM

Not looking forward to the cold, wet week, but at least I got some nice presents for Christmas. :) Happy New Year everyone.

enigmaT120 12-28-15 01:59 PM

34 degrees F. and misting most of the way to the bus (9 miles) this morning. I even had to ride my brakes on the downhills to avoid outrunning my sightline in the rain and fog. I hate that. I should have worn my contact lenses rather than my glasses. I even wondered at what point it would be better to sit on a spin cycle (or other indoor exercise machine) than to ride my bike. What the heck, I didn't get too wet and (more importantly) didn't get cold.

Our forecast after tomorrow looks gorgeous.

esmith2039 12-29-15 05:52 AM

Ice!! Talk about butt pucker looking down hill which is entire sheet of ice. Just took it slow and the studs stayed hooked up so no real issue's. The only real issue is the sides of the roads isn't cleared off so either have to ride in the middle of the street or battle the snow spray.
