holy smokes, it's 75 degrees right now. Suiting up to head home; this is going to be awesome!

patches of ice on the street in no apparent pattern
 |
Lots of snow, headwind. Could be better.
Still lots better than sitting in the monster traffic jam. |
Not cold at all here in DC this morning, but that *!#$ headwind. Rolling down Capitol Hill I was barely moving! Legs were burning by the time I arrived here at the office.

Warmest morning commute in a couple of weeks, with temps in the low-40s. It's actually supposed to be much colder (and windier) this afternoon because a cold front is pushing through during the day. Temps are supposed to be 10-15 degrees colder by the time I get home.
My legs are tired from a combination of factors -- cold temps every day, windy weather most of the time, riding my heavier bikes with fatter tires and racking up lots of miles for mid-winter. I set this crazy goal for myself this year -- to top 10,000 total miles cycling in a year for the first time. I have easily topped 9,000 miles the past two years, even though I missed a lot of commutes due to weather much rainier than usual. So, I'll need to muddle through weather like we're having lately if I'm going to reach that goal. |
40F this morning again warmer than previous days due to some cloudiness overnight. I didn't need the thicker ski mittens that I normally need for the ride in. It is not supposed to get much warmer though, high of 44.
I have the in-laws in town and am taking off work tomorrow to visit and go to my son's gymnastics competition. This is an extra-short commute week for me since I didn't ride on Monday due to a flat. Back to 5 days next week though. |
I bailed, -6F wind chill and I'm just done with sub zero temps. Kinda early in the season for my bad attitude but the ride home last night just sucked - mid 20's, heavy snow, ripping headwind. Someone call the wambulance

My ride home last night was cut short. Big thanks to my wife for picking me up (no spare and even if I had one... who has time to fill a fatbike tire with a compact hand pump) |

Lovely ride this morning over packed snow/ice, with some mank and soft new-fallen snow thrown in for giggles. Old John Harvard needs to get off his fat arse and start shoveling again!

-5C, snowed, it froze on the ground, bike slipped, I fell, had to put chain back in place, gloves stained white saddle, can't remove stain

I did my mixed transportation commute today from the wife's office. Even though there was a 40% chance of rain, it was nice when we left the house...so I left the bike with fenders at home and grabbed my Univega. Well, as soon as we crossed the river into the city it started raining. By the time we got to her office, it was raining a bit harder. So I had rain. It was a little cold, but a pleasant ride - I just wish I had brought my bike with fenders. It stopped about halfway through, so I treated myself to breakfast and coffee before going to the office. Even the guy who only rides a bike to work got a ride from his wife today, so...points for me!!

of that I am painfully aware, my only gripe, however, is that that saddle is only 3 days old, heh

Heavy dense fog this morning from the moment my ride started until I got to work. Scary, dark and the mostly misty view did not inspire confidence.
Looking on other side at least I didn't hit anything and nothing hit me . . . so no worries! Rick / OCRR |
You know your hubs need servicing when...
Your spinning out your 52T chainring on a downhill barely moving and a guy riding (coasting to be more specific) your city bike share bike (45lbs, 3 speed) speeds pass you. My commute this morning was terrible. No matter I how hard I pedaled my bike just wouldn't accelerate. I felt a whole lot of friction in my rear wheel and must have stopped a million times suspecting it was a brake pad rub when it in fact wasn't. Even my track stands where terrible; generally I can do them on even the slightest of inclines but today I couldn't generate the necessary roll-back momentum to stay upright unless I was on a noticeably steep incline. I don't think I have sealed bearings so I suspect that may have been affected by my snow commuting. The weather in NYC has been terrible the past two weeks.

Monday and Thursday are my bike commuting days. Something has spoiled it most weeks, so I'm getting about one day a week. Today it was illness. I had some kind of food poisoning bug. I stayed home. My wife's evening clients canceled tomorrow and I could have ridden, except my appetite hasn't returned, I'll be weak, and even if it weren't so, it will be raining. Moral: rinse your baby carrots!

Props to you, I would be skidding and sliding everywhere around Cambridge right now.

My wife caught sight of me during my commute today. I was almost home and coming across a fairly busy intersection about a mile from the house. She was in her car headed the other way, and snapped a picture of me on her cell phone. Apparently I was moving so fast I was a blur! :)

18F/-8C but with virtually no wind, really not bad at all.

Wimped out and drove today. Temperatures dipped down into the teens and I was tired of riding in the cold, and I had a very tough commute yesterday with stiff headwinds all the way home. Then I picked up a roofing nail in my back tire about 1/2 mile from home. Funny thing is that the tire didn't go flat but was making a thumping noise on every revolution. I had to pull out the tack with some pliers and then the tire immediately deflated. Good thing I didn't pull it out when I first noticed it because I would have had to walk the rest of the way home. Not worth fixing a flat on the roadside in cold temps when I could walk home quicker.
My legs were telling me that I needed a rest day anyway. My average speeds have been dropping all week. We are supposed to have sunny skies and much warmer temperatures all weekend, so I am planning a long rides for Saturday and Sunday. Some rest today would be good for that. |
-8C today, no accidents today, I call that a success.
