Thanks. Yeah I kept it upright long enough to do a u-turn and ride back to the trail (out of the street).

I'll ask too, what bar was that? I'm sure it was a fluke but one I'd like to avoid!

Nice commute this morning with temps in the low 30s and light winds, but it will be a tough ride home. A strong cold front is moving through the area during the day, and winds are supposed to be howling out of the north this afternoon -- which is the direction I'll be heading. We've had a lot of days like that this winter, and it's made for some tough rides home.

Hmm, looks like wind coming my way too. And I'll also be heading north, into the wind. Fun. Lucky for me though that Thursday is a shorter commute than normal as I meet the family partway while a child is in ballet class.

On the way home yesterday I noticed a bunch of broken glass (or plastic like from headlights) scattered at one intersection. Then I kept seeing patches of it for the next quarter mile or so. I wonder if a dump truck had a leak or something. Luckily I avoided it enough that no flat happened.

This morning I stopped to pick up something that I thought was a multi-tool of sorts but turned out to be a broken pair of scissors. I left them as I prefer not to ride with scissor blades in my pocket.

I looked it up, it turns out it was a Zoom. Probably an easy bar to avoid.

This morning I turned off the alarm and fell back asleep. When i reawoke, it was late and I should have driven but I didn't. I was still half-asleep, and it was raining. I was hammering for about 10 mins and realized I wasn't going to be able keep this up (sore knee) so I took the skytrain part of the way to pick up some lost time.

Saw an accident on my route last night:
Cyclist was crossing broadway at kind of a strange crossing...you leave a quiet bikes/buses only one-way street and shoot right across broadway (major street) with no traffic controls. Sometimes people stop, sometimes they don't. In this case, the two westbound lanes nearest the bike stopped, including a cube van in the centre lane. An SUV, hidden from view by the cube van, didn't stop so the bike and SUV collided. I didn't see what led up to the crash, but I saw them hit and the cyclist crumple. Expensive bike (cervelo)--the guy seemed OK but I'll bet he's sore today. The bike was still useable. A fellow commuter who was right behind the cervelo stopped and got plate info and had the 'witness' angle under control, so I left. I see that commuter a lot, so he knows the intersection well--that's why HE didn't get hit!

That intersection always baffled and seemed odd to me. I never used it nor did I see many use it but I suppose that is due to time of day. Glad he was okay.

I get to commute to another operation for some more skin grafting today

Only two commutes last week and zero this week. Snow today and single digit lows expected next week. It was actually decent weather yesterday. I'm kicking myself for not riding. I having a hard time getting motivated to ride in the cold lately. Wife wants to eat Mexican tonight and she scored free tickets to the game so no ride today.

dcb23 02-13-15 05:34 AM

Yikes, cold with a strong annoying headwind: 14F / -10C

tarwheel 02-13-15 07:01 AM

Not my coldest commute of the winter temperaturewise (low 20s) but it felt the coldest due to a strong NW wind. Fortunately, it was a tailwind much of the time, but the first 2 miles were uphill and into the wind. That was cold! My water bottle also froze up more than it did on days when the temperature was colder. The ride home yesterday was brutal with a stiff headwind almost the entire way, and it took 5 minutes longer than usual.

This has been a strange winter for us in NC. Colder than usual but not even the slightest hint of snow or frozen precip yet. OK, I have seen a few flurries a couple of times. However, the extended weather forecast is predicting that we might get snow or sleet next Tuesday. I'm not going to hold my breath.

mgw4jc 02-13-15 07:36 AM

Thursday afternoons I have a shorter ride than usual and yesterday I was glad. The winds were brutal. A crosswind blew me off the road once. Nothing bad, I just went off into the grass for a moment.

24F this morning coming in and I'm still cold 40 minutes after being in the office. High of about 39 today with a pretty cold weekend in store. I'm off work Monday for President's Day (WOOT!).

arsprod 02-13-15 08:27 AM

Two days in a row not riding - my excuse today is I have a very short window to be home so don't want to miss too much work. The real reason is it's day 2 of single digit temps, sub zero wind chills. I'm just over winter... wah wah

bconneraz 02-13-15 11:14 AM

I woke to another day of the Santa Ana winds, and while wind isn't usually much fun, the Santa Ana's blow warm, so my commute this morning was unseasonably warm; it was jersey and bibs only, with no need for my vest. The forecast calls for 84 and sunny when I depart today, and more of the same for the next week; I should get some great rides in. I feel for all of you that are currently freezing your arses off; I've been there myself, and I have nothing but respect for you all braving the cold to stay on your bikes. I've pretty much decided that I'm done with snow country; if push ever comes to shove, I'll load up my longtail and become a west coast bike drifter.

Hypno Toad 02-13-15 11:35 AM

It was GOOD to be back on the bike again this morning, first time since last Wednesday. It was icy, lots of tricky spots - I was VERY happy for the studs this morning!

Darth Lefty 02-14-15 01:44 AM

I forgot to mention yesterday, Strava gave me four tiny little pixelated trophies for the ride home. I did the Main Ave fire road at 9.2 mph / 5:12 which puts me only a little off the KOM pace of 23.3 mph / 2:03.

Darth Lefty 02-15-15 09:19 AM

This was from Thursday. Thanks for the warning, guys!

Hilarious. I wish someone could make a video like this one, showing the absurdity of the sign placement.

Man that's a horrid bike lane even without the sign in the way.

While visiting and cycling around Indianapolis I encountered a similar and typical engineering feat. BTW, I wanted to go straight anyway and not turn off. Double bummer here. And people wonder why I don't like riding on sidewalks.

On topic, commuting was great. Although I still struggle to stay cool in 12 degrees Fahrenheit. I really wish my coat has a rear vent.

Darth Lefty 02-16-15 11:36 AM

Bad start to the day/week, with a much-vaunted Pasela suffering a bead torn loose from the carcass. This was less than a mile from the front door so I walked back and got the MTB. Will investigate later.

Hypno Toad 02-16-15 11:46 AM

Good morning commute, 10F with light snow. The snow combined the ice left from last week's storm reminded me, I do NOT have studs on the Pugsley. Damn near went down, but my inner-ninja was there to save my bacon. Tomorrow, the Nail Trail (with studs) will be back in service.

tdreyer1 02-16-15 12:21 PM

First snow I've been able to ride in for a few years... Just as fun as I remembered it! :D

We got a couple-three inches last night and it was just spitting when I headed in. ~15f made for a pretty comfortable ride and the old studded tires worked great.

timvan_78 02-16-15 12:44 PM

great morning: nice sunrise, dry, cool, calm, blossoms are out. (Great white north, indeed.)

Yeah it looks gorgeous out today. I at least have a nice view of QE park.

Fello BFers keep enjoying the rides for me and let me live vicariously through your posts.

I really appreciate you coming into this thread and saying hi to us.

It was bright and sunny this morning in NYC, but the wind was very high, and the temperature was 6ºF (-14ºC). I'm not tough enough to cycle 12.5 miles in that stuff.

tarwheel 02-16-15 05:19 PM

Our bike commuting is taking a big hit in NC as wintry precipitation has finally reached here. Very cold temps today with the high in mid-20s, and snow started mid afternoon. It has now turned to sleet and we could get a 1/2-inch of freezing rain before it's over. Then we are supposed to get record-breaking cold, with lows about 5F and 0 the next two days. From past experience, driving will be next to impossible for several days, let alone cycling.

[TD="class: comment, colspan: 2"]9f and sunny, First time riding in 29 days. Severe neck pain kept me off the bike. Finally able to ride comfortably. . I rode down to the river and behind Antrim Lake. I rode for about an hour or so and had no discomfort from the neck or any tingling down my right arm. Any that I did have was minimal. It felt good being able to ride comfortably. There was snow on the ground and it was 9f.

Following up. Still haven't done any investigation of cause, likely won't for a few days
