We had a bunch of severe thunderstorms last night that should knock down the pollen at least temporarily, so I finally rode to work again this morning. It was warm and humid with wet roads due to all of the rain, and I had a stiff headwind the whole way. Forecasters are calling for more storms this afternoon, even more severe than yesterday, so I will be keeping a close eye on the radar. I may have to leave work early or catch a ride home with a coworker if the timing is bad. Yesterday the forecast called for storms hitting mid-afternoon to rush hour, but they didn't kick up until 7-8 pm.

I went for a ride around my neighborhood after work, and it was sunny and warm with no storms showing up on the radar at 5 pm. By the time I returned home two hours later, the skies were black and there was a lot of thunder rumbling in the distance. It started raining shortly after I got home and continued for hours. We had a tremendous amount of lightning with the storms, and one person was struck and killed, and quite a few homes were hit and caught on fire.

Last night's tailwinds were this morning's headwinds. Luckily not too strong. I just took it a bit easier.

April has brought back the cankerworm to our area. These little guys dangle via a thread from tree branches. The wind then allows them to be in the middle of sidewalks, paths, and even roads. Then they hitch a ride onto any passersby.

At work I park my bike under a tree and will have several of them inching their way around on my wheels or frame at the end of the day.

About 41 degrees (F) and windy. Chilly for me, having moved from Arizona to Indiana over the summer. The ride itself was uneventful.

arsprod 04-10-15 07:31 AM

Evil, wicked crosswinds - 25mph with gusts to 36 and the temps have dropped to upper 40'sF. There's one section of my ride where the trail runs along an open field - I was leaned over just to stay upright. Unlike a headwind where I'd be looking forward to a blistering ride home I'll likely have to do this again, argh

snow_echo_NY 04-10-15 07:59 AM

it was cold yesterday. and the winds were blowing me around all over the place yesterday. the roads were empty of bikes and cars. it was kind of nice. it rained overnight. i would have rode today if i had fenders. they are coming in today so i should have them installed later today or early next week. i just didn't want to sit thru wet muck again today. just not feeling up to it. next week is a new week :)

PatrickGSR94 04-10-15 09:47 AM

I could have ridden home with a tail wind yesterday (but didn't), so I rode in this morning with a tail wind, since we had a cold front and the winds shifted around with the storms last night. Mostly dry this morning, and much cooler in the low 50's. Should be upper 60's this afternoon with only a light headwind. May try to cut out a bit early, because Friday. :D

Last night I "commuted" to a floor hockey game on my bike, does that count for this thread? The fun part was figuring out how to carry a hockey stick on a bike; ended up bungie strapping it to the top tube with the blade in the back. Looked like a funky set of fenders from the side!

None of the guys I play floor hockey with had ever seen a fixie before. They just couldn't fathom why anyone would want to ride a bike that didn't coast!

Squeeze 04-10-15 03:08 PM

I've always wondered that too, but I realize the answer must be just to try it and see.

spivonious 04-10-15 04:33 PM

Stuck at home with a bad cold, so no rides the past two days. Hopefully I start feeling better. Being stuck inside stinks!

joeyduck 04-10-15 07:56 PM

I got on a bike today!

Granted it was a recumbent stationary bike and I only pedaled back and forth.

I had an exhausting week doing X-rays and follow up visits. I've been progressing and healing well. My ortho physician gave an all clear to fully weight bear! So that gives me excellent things to work on.

Being in the full rehab facility is nice and they keep us busy doing all sorts of therapy things. I look forward to being done before June and our daughters arrival.

Today I left my house it was about 33 degrees f. Minutes into my ride it started snowing :( I had to ride straight into 15 or so MPH winds. I wasnt sure if I was a little slower on my times due to the wind or my new gear setup or both. but its was like snow that just turned into water so more like snrain. shhh thats a word. Then shortly after I got there the sun came out....
My ride home was awesome. it was 55 degrees, no wind, sunny, well as much as it can be around sunset. I made good time. Better than normal. Im loving this new gear! I stopped and did some grocery shopping on the way home. it was nice. complete 180.. gotta love Minnesota.

I have always wondered how to bike with a hockey stick! I skipped skating this winter cause I just didnt have the motivation to figure it out. I regret it! well my skates AND a hockey stick anyways. I have panniers now so I have the skate bit figured out. Ill have to try this next winter!

Looking forward to a good 30 mile round-trip commute today in the sunshine. Riding home in the rain the other night I rode through what appeared to be a small puddle (no way around it with car coming up behind me) but turned out to be a deep pothole. Hit so hard my feet came off the pedals and the rear tire tube blew out. Luckily I was within walking distance to home and had a spare tube in bag. Wheel appears to be okay. Gonna try real hard not to do that again...ever. :)

Archwhorides 04-12-15 10:45 AM

No kickstand, but still, totally kickass!

On Friday, I got the new Gator Hardskin on the front wheel in place of the remaining studded tire. The Friday commutes were dreamy in low 30-40F precipitation; so little effort to spin up the lighter wheelset after building the quads with winter conditions.

essiemyra 04-13-15 05:11 AM

A chilly 33f degrees when I left the house this am, but at least I am on my bike. The ride in was nice. The temps will get to about 70f for my ride home, that will be very nice!!

esmith2039 04-13-15 05:28 AM

It was just right this morning, temp and wind. Too bad was in a allergy pill fog.. tends to shorten my temper a bit to. Was hoping for a slow pace ride in but forgot my badge and had to go back 3/4 mile from home. Put a Kenda K908 on the rear yesterday I think it helped some but hard to tell with all those factors!

mr geeker 04-13-15 06:14 AM

I had a good commute this morning, granted it's only 4 miles, but that still counts.

Great news! Good to hear about the improvements.

Nothing exciting to report about this morning's commute. Forecasters are calling for rain this week. I felt a few drops on my way in.

I ran in a half marathon race on Saturday. My legs are still pretty sore from that, but biking wasn't too bad.

KCBikeCommuter 04-13-15 07:20 AM

Good commute this morning... although I realized I forgot my high-visibility vest about 1/2 mile from home and had to turn around. Even with all my lights, I just feel safer wearing the vest. 55F and and nice tailwind all the way to work.

Riveting 04-13-15 07:21 AM

It was 29 F this morning for the commute in, but it's supposed to be 66 for the ride home. It's tricky to pick the right gear for both conditions, but it's still way better than suffering on the trainer.

That's freakin' brilliant! We should all make videos of our commutes and send to you so you can feel like you're riding. Although come to think of it if everyone's ride is as boring as mine you're likely to regress! Lovely Spring morning, 60F, pretty stiff headwind but I'll take it

tarwheel 04-13-15 09:04 AM

Gorgeous weather right now except for the pollen, which isn't really weather per se. The pollen is the only thing keeping the commuting conditions from being ideal in NC, and we continue to be covered in a yellow cloud. Fortunately I'm feeling much better since I started taking allergy medication. I'm actually looking forward to the rain we are supposed to get tomorrow, which should clear out the pollen at least temporarily. The heavy rains we were supposed to get last Friday never materialized, so everything is coated in yellow dust.

Today was absolutely delightful. I was a little cool starting out, and the traffic as soon as I left my subdivision was pretty yucky, but once I left that road (~1/2 mile) everything was fine. I really am loving my Peugeot. Putting a mountain bike RD and cassette on it has given me enough gear range where I never feel like I am working particularly hard, the bike is super smooth and an absolute pleasure to be on, my Brooks saddle keeps my tuckus nice and comfy, and that bike is just beautiful. I'm really liking the Randonneur bars I put on her, so much that after only 2 days of commuting I went back to one of my road bikes for a ride and the bars felt wide and weird at the hoods.

The ride was cloudy and cool, but I just hummed along the road enjoying every mile

Ordered a new bike on the weekend (Trek 7.2 disc) so this week is some of the my last commutes to work (20 minutes each way in downtown Toronto) on my current bike, "Shaniqua", a 5 year old Norco hybrid.

She's been a workhorse the last 5 years, she's been a yearround bike even in winter, real rack and fenders, carried some ridiculously heavy loads on two panniers. Cost me about $120 a year in parts 'n labor. Good bike, gonna be a bit sad selling her off and getting the new whip in a week or so.

spivonious 04-13-15 09:43 AM

Amazing weather today, but I drove in as my cold has moved into my chest. Hopefully I get back on the bike tomorrow.

I was able to check out some recumbent bikes at a new store that opened up on Saturday. So comfortable! If the price wasn't twice as much as an equivalent standard bike, I'd really be tempted to get one as my main commuter.

PatrickGSR94 04-13-15 09:48 AM

Awesome weather over the weekend, so I cranked out my first ever metric century on Saturday (total of 67 miles), doing it solo unsupported. Unfortunately I was stupid and forgot sunscreen, and also didn't take enough food. I was bonking out and miserable towards the end, and my arms and knees got burned pretty good.

This morning we had rain, and more rain later today, plus leaving for work after lunch for a Dr appt for me and another Dr appt for my son. So I drove the car today. Tomorrow is looking pretty nice, however.

Once I got my current commuting bike, I lost all interest in repairing the flat I had on my old one and riding it. Absolutely zero interest, and I thought it would be hard to let go of that bike. I still have to trip her of fenders, rack, cycling computer and a few other things that will not be sold with her, and I guess finally repair the flat.

The last time I replaced a bike I got emotional over it. the LBS guy had basically told me the wheels had truing problems, spoked needed replacing, chain, cassette issues, etc it was going to be like $200-250 in repairs on a $400 hybrid bike. I ended up taking it to a local "bike pirates" place and donating it for the parts they could use. It was tough to say goodbye to it I found.

I just find it odd how we dispose of these inanimate objects that were so profoundly useful to us for years and then as soon as we get a nice bike the old ones are instantly forgotten.
