Been gone for a while, but I figured I might as well jump back in considering I'm riding more and more.

Wasn't a "commute" per say, but I ran and got groceries today. The riding was great, weather...notsomuch. Leave it to Wyoming to snow in mid-April when it was 70 degrees and sunny yesterday.

Another chilly 32f degree start out the door with clear blue skies. A very nice commute this morning.

I bailed again this morning due to cold and rain. This will be two days in a row of no bike commute. What has my life come to?!

I drove the past two days but opted to ride in the rain this morning. The traffic has been horrendous the past couple of days in Raleigh, and I couldn't stomach another drive in rush-hour traffic. It rained lightly during my entire commute but not hard enough to get me very wet. Hopefully the forecast will hold and the rain will end by late afternoon.

We have had so much rainy weather the past 3 years that I'm starting to feel like we live in Seattle or Portland. We used to get extended spells of dry weather and it was unusual for me to miss more than 1-2 days of commuting each week due to rain. However, the past few years we can't seem to go more than 1-2 days without more rain, and then it often continues for days on end. My bikes are all filthy due to riding in the rain, and every time that I wash them, we just get more rain.

esmith2039 04-16-15 08:27 AM

Excellent.. just the right temp and took it easy. Found a small short cut that eliminates one hill on the way home but turns 1 big hill and one 1 small into a even small hill on the way in.. that is if the train isn't in the way! Hit 200 miles today since I started commuting in March and also on this new bike.

arsprod 04-16-15 10:32 AM

Still cool, low 50's and wet from rain. Thunderstorms forecast for this afternoon. Rode to a breakfast meeting that almost turned into a lunch meeting. It was at a spot along my way to work but had to really hoof it from the meeting to office in time for another appointment. I hate riding hard because I have to rather than I want to

essiemyra 04-17-15 04:50 AM

The forecast was for showers this morning. Since it was not raining when I was going to leave the house, I took the chance of outrunning them. That didn't happen. Though they started out very light and I did not get soaking wet. I am glad I rode today because the rain is going to be over by lunch time so my commute looks very nice for my ride home.

esmith2039 04-17-15 05:47 AM

Not bad this morning.. little breeze and upper 50's. Having to rethink my clothing. Even in the upper 50's cold starting out but burning up by the time I climb the hills to my destination. Wore short sleeve under a hoodie this morning without a head covering just my sweat band. Should work okay for a couple weeks and then have to readjust again. First full 5 day commute (only 68 miles though) since I started riding March 2014.. a decent well fitting bike does wonders!

I prefer to be cold at the start knowing I will warm up pretty quickly. It helps too that the last third of my first mile is a pretty good hill that gets my heart pumping quickly.

We are on day 3 of rain. I skipped Wed and Thur, but I rode today. Just a drizzle on the way in and I think it is supposed to move out around lunch time.

I agree...really nice ride in KC this morning. Maybe one of the nicest I've had this year. It was nice not feeling like I was battling the wind for a change, and I was able to just enjoy the ride!

i had first commute of the season on my road bike this morning. and what a beautiful morning it is!

as practical as my commuter and winter bikes are, there is a special cycling joy that only my road bike can provide.

snow_echo_NY 04-17-15 08:46 AM

excellent weather today. it rained overnight and as early as this morning. by the time i started riding, there was only rain on the ground. so glad to have my SKS raceblade fenders. kept me totally dry!.

i may have to stop using the brooklyn bridge in the mornings. it's still empty but there's construction at the two pedestrian lookouts forcing everyone into a tiny space. and this morning i also saw a homeless man with his cart of probably his life's stuff blocking the entire pedestrian walkway while walking around looking totally confused - this is around the part on the manhattan side where people squeeze by the stairs right before park row.

this is right after i saw police in golf carts blocking the paths on the bridge and snoring in the golf carts. they are not really watching for terrorists so i really don't know what they're doing there.

after getting off the bridge, i called 911, then called 311, then 911 again. they went to go escort him off 40 minutes later but it seems by then he was gone. or...they weren't looking in the right place. sigh. why i try to be a good citizen, i don't know. The calls were really frustrating where the first person on 911 said that's a 311 call. and the people at 311 said they can't do anything and that i should call 911. i called 911 again and they finally took down the info. in any case. i saw people trying to talk to the police in the golf carts then later realized why they probably were talking to them. of course they don't do anything b/c it's not their jurisdiction or responsibility. whatevz. so annoyed this morning at the system.

yesterday's commute was easy breezy. i voted (participatory budget). and i went to a maintenance class on derailleurs and shifting which was really interesting. all while riding home from work. was awesome :)

btw. excited to pull off what footage i may have captured with the cycliq fly6 light/camera i got this wk. excited!!!

So glad to be back on the road bike this morning! Great ride! Warm enough for shorts & a warmish long sleeved jersey & a pretty beautiful spring morning.

yeah, i have to agree - it's pretty bad. what's worse is, i posted it on our local cycling FB forum, where someone chewed me out for calling the cops to which i retorted, well i'd rather the homeless guy is safe, peds and cyclists safe, which is what i was trying to accomplish. anyway he backed off.

...then others on the local cycling forum chiming in they had to dodge and avoid the homeless man on the bridge this morning too, but he had wandered over to the brooklyn side.

*shrug*

sigh. spring shennanigans while commuting.

bconneraz 04-18-15 10:14 AM

It's been nice all week, and I've been been incorporating more mixed surface riding into my commute to keep things exciting. The added bonus is that I'm also away from traffic. I add a bit of elevation, but the distance works out to be nearly the same.

I skipped riding in today- it was nice to drive in on a Saturday with wide open freeways, and I'll get home so quick today that it'll be like having a day off.

esmith2039 04-20-15 06:23 AM

Mother nature has ADHD. Cooler this morning and a good tail wind, didn't feel could though. Well it was tail wind on occasion.. mostly out of the west but switched from the east going up 2 major hills and from the south climbing another.

Did some work on the commuter this weekend and don't know if it was my imagination but felt easier this morning. Lubed by chain with fluid film and regreased the front wheel bearings, still need to rebuild the crankset and rear.

mgw4jc 04-20-15 07:07 AM

A good Monday morning ride. We had copious amounts of rain yesterday, but it cleared out by this morning. I stopped to check out a creek flowing much higher than normal. This was on a wooden bridge that was also wet and very slick, but I stayed upright on the stop and start.

arsprod 04-20-15 07:43 AM

57F, rainy, windy. At ride start I was thinking how nice it was and how amazing the wet, Spring smells are, thinking that people that don't ride in the rain don't know what they're missing. Towards the end of the ride when both the wind and rain picked up and the rain was nearly horizontal I was thinking they're the smart ones!

Darth Lefty 04-20-15 11:22 AM

I was phoned up mid-ride by VISA fraud prevention, who wanted to ask about my Ribble order.

Bike feels sluggish. Not sure why. Once said Ribble order comes in, I'll be building up my XR800, and if I like it, this one will go away.

PatrickGSR94 04-20-15 11:43 AM

Wanted to ride today, but allergies have been a biotch. Oh well, it was too windy for my liking today anyway. Tomorrow should be nice with light winds in my favor in the afternoon, but tomorrow morning 46 degrees!

On a side note I did an easy group ride on Saturday morning with my utility bike with the new Shimano brake/shifter combo units I just installed Friday night, which work much better with the geometry of my Metropolis bars, and also reduce the number of clamps on each side to only one. They replace the nearly 20 year old original Deore trigger shifters that would barely shift for crap. New ones are SO much better!

Late January I noticed a bit of an Achilles injury; between field work early February, vacation half of March, and the injury, I didn't ride much at all from late-January to early-April. Now I'm back at 'er, and catching up on my 2014 stats :)

It was almost 60F here this morning, warmer than it has been in a few weeks (at least) and it was great!

And almost right off the bat I got passed by a guy on a Specialized Turbe e-bike:

Cooler and windier today than it has been, with a chance of rain. So I held off breaking out the skinny-tire go-fast bike for another day. Could be worse.

mgw4jc 04-21-15 06:26 AM

My wife rescued me from the rain yesterday afternoon. We had more on than off scattered thunderstorms between 4 and 6pm.

A bit cool this morning at 50F. I went with the short sleeve shirt anyway though as it will get up to 70. Enjoyed the ride.

bmthom.gis 04-21-15 07:24 AM

I'm missing out on some great commuting weather this week! The wife is off on a business trip so I am resigned to driving...all bc of my dogs. I don't want to have to make them wait an extra hour to go out...of course, I may just give in tomorrow and hop on the Peugeot. To make up for it..I'm gonna try fro mon-thurs next week all on the bike

spivonious 04-21-15 07:30 AM

Nice ride in this morning. A bit chilly for shorts and a t-shirt, but it will be perfect for the ride home.

arsprod 04-21-15 08:25 AM

Schizo weather - ride home yesterday started cloudy and windy, then rain, then hail, then rain, then... This morning it was 42F but at least it's sunny. High wind advisory for this afternoon - should be interesting!

tarwheel 04-21-15 08:49 AM

Nice commute this morning with clear skies and a light tailwind much of the way, but the roads were still very wet from thunderstorms last night. I rode my CX bike with no fenders, and in retrospect should have taken my touring bike with fenders. Roads should be dry this afternoon and I might take the long way home.

I took a rest day on Monday after riding about 250 miles the previous 5 days, including 105 miles on Saturday. It turned out to be a great day to drive because thunderstorms started popping up mid-afternoon and I would have gotten a good soaking if I had ridden.
